I haven't used that manufacturer before, so I have no experience with it to say if it is a good kiln to start with or not. I have used Skutt, Evenheat and Denver Glass Machinery and al three of those brands have been great to work with and very user friendly. I hope this helped!
500 degrees is a placeholder, I am setting the kiln so that in effect it will cool AFAP. It basically tells the kiln to not turn back on. It allows it to cool at the rate that the kiln itself will naturally come down to room temperature. I hope this helps clarifies things.
