Easy pet digital illustration tutorial for beginners using the Procreate app.
This is the process of turning a photo into a digital illustration in Procreate, hopefully you can learn something and create your own digital illustrations.
You don’t have to be super precise when creating a pet illustration, create your own lines and you will see that the result it’s going to be amazing.
For this digital art I am using the iPad Pro 12.9”, the Apple Pencil and the drawing app Procreate. The brushes used during the video are default ones in Procreate.

Hi! Welcome to my channel. Here I’m going to be uploading weakly videos of simple digital art tutorials / IPad drawing tutorials like this one for you to enjoy or hopefully do it yourself. I like to keep it SIMPLE and easy so you can learn by following my lead and get to the same results. My goal is to concentrate on digital art for beginners so I will be focusing on beginners friendly projects that are enjoyable instead of frustrating this way you can have fun doing them while building a base for your digital art skills.

WOW that looks fun. its almost like tracing but then you file in your own painting/artwork. :) i guess thats easier then just trying to draw from complete scratch! :) I want to try that one of these days! if i can find old pictures of my dogs when they were puppies maybe i can draw them for my mom one died at 16 and the other at 17 years old and they were from the same litter to but looked completly different.(black lab, sharpie and german shepard. ,Murphy looked like medium sized shepard with curly tail while the sister was like a baby lab all her life)

Loved your video. Definitely peeked my interest. It would be so nice to hear editing verbiage in your work and efforts rather than scrolling thru the numerous QA’s. Understanding why/how is very educational especially for those who are not illustrators on the norm. Such a cute dog to try on...

I love this video. Is there a feature where I need to turn on because every time I try to color in a layer it fills my whole screen up? Thank you

Hi! Make sure that the shape you want to fill with color is completely closed. If it doesn't work for you it could be because of the brush you are using, try changing the brush. Another trick is to bring the color to the shape and leave it on it for a few seconds without releasing it. This will activate the "color threshold". Without removing your finger or pencil, slide from left to right until the figure fills with color. Hope that helps!

Hi! For this illustration I used the Studio Pen brush and I had the StreamLine in 100% for smooth strokes. I used the brush in a small size to get pointy edges. Hope that helped, thanks for watching! ❤️

Are you able to make a video on how you choose the colors for these types of illustrations? When I get orders, I have such a hard time deciding what colors to do for different layers, etc. because the color drop doesn’t get the color right when you color drop on photos with weird lighting (for example; a picture of a white dog, but the picture is yellowey because of the lighting, so when you color match/color drop, it turns out yellow and not white). How do you decide what colors to do for each layer? Thanks!!

Hi Kaitlynn! I actually don’t use the color drop for these illustrations. I like to choose my own color because as you say, sometimes the lighting prevents choosing a good color. If you look at the photo the dog looks darker but I know the dog is white with gray parts so I try to stay in that range of colors. I always make each part in a different layer so I can change the colors at the end in an easier way if I need to. Hope that helps! ❤️

Do you put the image in the colour palette feature? I need to draw a dog in a commission but it’s turned out too life like and doesn’t match the people in the picture and it’s a cockerpoo so there’s lots of different colours 😭

No, I didn’t put the image to create the color palette. As you can see in the photo there are many shades of gray and white but I didn’t want to have so many colors in the illustration. As the dog is white and gray, what I did was choose the white color for the main coat and then I manually chose darker tones for each part. I suggest that you manually choose the color that you see the most in the dog's coat and then begin to lower or raise shades. Since you don't want the illustration to look very realistic, you shouldn't worry so much about each part being exactly the same color or having so many details. I hope this helps!

This is 100% my problem, too! I’m pretty new to digital art and I guess I’m trying too hard to match it perfectly (even though the style I’m going for is less detailed) because I keep adding and adding colors thinking it’ll be ‘better’ and it always turns out like ass - like a horrible attempt at realism (which I cannot do) 😂 Thank you so much for this tutorial, I just subscribed and now going to binge all of your videos! 😃 I do have a question, though. What’s your recommendation as to canvas size for an illustration like this? I always run out of layers, but I’m scared the quality won’t be good enough if I use a smaller size. Thank you again!

Hi @@CosmicBritt! I used to do that too but now I just don’t focus on each color being exactly the same or in making every little detail the pet has because at the end it’s a cartoon, it doesn’t have to look realistic 😊 I mostly use my Screen Size (2048 x 2732px), that gives me 91 layers and the quality is good enough for me.. Hope that helps!
