Awesome, I’d like to get my stuff on tape. It’s definitely time consuming but sounds fun and it’s nice to make a physical copy of something
@424Recording
@424Recording 5 лет назад
You could always go thru one of the duplication companies or start with like 5 copies. Def takes some time but it's one of those things you learn a lot about as you're doing it and get faster at the process as it goes along... hmmm I guess that's like most things? Haha

424 Recording yea totally! What duplication company do you recommend? That’s probably what I’m gonna do is start out with 5 or so copies and go from there
@jasonelambeth
@jasonelambeth 5 лет назад
@@johnwitherspoon7842 I've heard great things about National Audio Company, but they have a minimum order of 50 for dubbing. I've bought my blanks from deltamedia and dubbed them at home. I found a few used tape decks in thrift stores and on eBay and then just run an ipod into them. That might be the way to go if your looking to start out 5 copies.

@@424Recording I've never done any art stuff for vinyl. It's definitely a pipe dream that's why I popped that question. However, if I were in your shoes and didn't have a ton of copies to make I would look online for a template. Get some large sized card stock, draw or paint your album cover on there, cut them out and put them together with double sided tape or glue. Another option would be to go find some junk records at a thrift store and repurpose the jackets by collaging or painting over them. It would be super diy, but could work. You could even deconstruct an old album cover to use as a template for the cardstock.

I read an article about those good old super heavyweight TDK metal chrome cassettes. I guess there’s some surplus here and there, and they fetch about 50$ or more on eBay for one cassette if they’re new, NBRFOP, and I tell my dad about it. He smiled at me then showed me his stashed hoard of about 120 or so of these exact TDKs! He won’t let me touch them, flipping pack rat. I’m thinking that doing a really artsy, per cassette performance type limited release would be so much fun to do, just the same way that Daniel Johnston would do his album. Just call it ‘my demo tape’ and have a stamp or silkscreen for the insert. Maybe I ought to try something like this, I liked when you said that there’s a sort of nirvana that comes with it. Maybe a sort of ‘mandala’ cassette is a good way to try this?! It would have an end of the tape cut loose so that the tape becomes unplayable after the first time through the one side. Better yet a sort of ‘strike anywhere’ match head mechanism that ensures the tape is rendered unplayable once’s it hits that match head queue (maybe breaking the deck in same try?). This gives me some ideas I would love to try. THANKS FoR SHARING!!!

Great series. What's the speaker in between your studio monitors?
@424Recording
@424Recording 5 лет назад
Hey, thanks, Levi. That's a Behritone. It's a mid range speaker. Kind of crappy on purpose. I mix most of the time through that speaker, in mono, at whisper volume. This is what it's based on www.soundonsound.com/reviews/auratone-5c-super-sound-cube
@littvay
@littvay 5 лет назад
That was a cool read. I have always wanted to play with single driver speakers for living room use. The system I have now is quite the opposite. Many diy audiophile / tube amp aficionados swear by such systems. I personally have no experience, but would be nice to get some. I had no idea there is a place for this genre in the world of mix down. Super interesting. Makes sense too. What do you drive these with to get the whisper volume? Don’t tell me the output from the jack (that is only supposed to drive the headphone) is enough.
@424Recording
@424Recording 5 лет назад
I just used an alternate output on the Apollo. Hooks up like a regular monitor. My mixing has improved 20x since I started using it. Highly recommended!

I think I have about 25 cassettes that we had professionally made. I was talking with an ex-band member from those cassettes, I said we should give one away with our CD that we were going to release. He hates the songs on that tape so he doesn't want me to give them to anyone. Too bad, because they are just sitting in my studio. I'd rather share them.
@424Recording
@424Recording 5 лет назад
Put them up somewhere, Mike. That's cool that you have them. You could always redub them, too, if your bandmate hates the songs that much. Cheers, Mike. That's a great point; it's better to have people enjoy that stuff that for it just to sit around. Thanks, Mike!

I'll have to brush up on my cake baking skills haha. I believe they're Type I's. Got them from NAC but now they seem to have a different tape stock...
@BugzKiller
@BugzKiller 5 лет назад
Mike then the type 1 is normal bias which is mainly used for talking on, etc. I don't think the clarity of music on those tapes would be as good. You can pretty much tell by the shade of the tape...usually Brown is type 1, and high bias is black tape. But at the same time back in the day of studio made tapes from the big record companies (maybe even today) used Type 1...weird. Cost effectiveness I guess overall. My Dad passed away last year and he has boxes and boxes of Type 1 name brand tapes, and he only recorded on most of them Once! I will try them out a few times on the Tascam 4 track to see how they sound after recording something. Thanks for these pod about cassettes as well, Mike...they will be interesting. Keep up the good work as always! @@424Recording
