Here's another project for DIY earrings. This tutorial teaches you how to create Hammered Circle Earrings. With a little wire you can have your own unique accessories that are tailored to your personality.

For the earrings in the tutorial I used 2, 10mm x7mm top drilled faceted Lapis Lazuli briolettes, also 10 inches of 18 gauge gold plated wire, and 12 inches 24 gauge gold tone wire. The finished earrings measure just under 2.5 inches in length from top to the bottom of the hoop and the circles are 1/2 inches in diameter. 18 gauge wire may be too large for some piercings so it’s best to check what wire works best for you. There’s a lot of versatility in this design so feel free to mix it up!

To make it easier, measure 2 identical pieces of wire and also measure how much wire you use for the first Circle that way you can use the same amount for the second circles so hopefully they will be closer in size. Hope this helps 😊

How funny..I made some of these about a month ago but now I am going to try my square wire. I use my cup bur handle (ear wire rounder ) to make my ear wire shape on..works perfect..mine is just like yours. I find if I make my ear wires to wide I lose one or both while wearing them.Great video as usual. Hope your well.

Thanks I’m good, hope,you are too. Yeah. I agree, the wire rounder is a great middle between the marker and ball point. I find that silicone ear backings are great for hook style earrings to make sure you don’t lose them, and I always push the earwire close to my ear lobe because I have a tendency to wear my jewelry forever despite all the jewelry I make. Square wire would be cool to use. Do you hammer it?

@@DeniseMathew I actually made some last night..havent hung the bead yet but I used square wire and twisted it then hammered it., they came out pretty cute. I agree with you also on the silicone backs, or slice some hot glue gun sticks into disks.. I have lost so many singles. I also have a massive amount of jewelry and sometimes just stick to one pair..crazy. The ole man is getting me a really nice wooden work table from Harbor Freight..later a drill press...cant wait and to start off for ALLLLLL my beads I bought 3 40 drawer organizers..usually used to hold screws and such but going to hang them on my wall in my office. I am so tired of all these plastic boxes with small compartments. And these new organizers have clear drawers..only 15.00 apiece at Hobby Lobby compared to 40 on Ebay.

Wow, sounds amazing, sounds like a dream with all that organization. My dream is to have one of those wooden work tables with the built in mandrel slot and a whole room workspace to myself. It will happen someday when my kids get their own places and then I’ll have the organization I crave, lol. Have fun with your new stuff! And I think I’ll try that technique with the square wire sounds quite pretty. 😊

@@DeniseMathew I have some wire bending jigs that need to be screwed down, then my vise..what is the built in mandrel slot ? Is it where your mandrel actually sets into the wood so you dont have to hold it ? This work bench also has velvet like lined drawers. My kids are grown and moved out, now I just have a baby trump who likes to throw fits (The ole man )...ha !!! I have an L shaped glass desk I have to take out and rearrange everything but I am pumped. Do you have a basement ? Let me know what the mandrel slot is..oh..I got one of those tools too that twists your wire..I havent tried it yet, have you seen them ?

Any wire will work, for more expensive and longer duration then sterling and gold filled are great options, for a more economical pair, silver or gold plated copper is a great wire to work with and usually doesn’t irritate piercings. The one thing to keep in mind is that it’s malleable and doesn’t have a plastic like coating that some Artistic wire has. I really like Beadsmith with for a brand of silver or gold plated copper, but any brand that you like is perfect. Hope this is helpful 😊

I love that the earring and wire are all in one. I have looked at your video about 100 times. I cannot seem to get the wire wrap right. You don't mention that the small cut side of wire needs to be included in the wrap. My wrap ended up being too long and then was crooked. I started over and it looked a little better. Any hints?

Sorry you’re having difficulty. I would try to make the circle part of the earring before you cut the ear wire length part, basically working off the spool, so after you form a circle on the mandrel just go ahead and make a closed loop wrapping the 1 inch piece of wire around the longer wire to close the loop. It should leave you with a closed loop, all the shorter wire should be wrapped around the long piece of wire for the ear wire. Then you can trim the longer wire from the spool to make the earwire part. By working off the spool you’ll only have 1 wire to wrap with and it might make it a little less confusing. I like using no smaller than 18 gauge wire for all my ear wires for regular piercings. Do you caution customers that it's slightly larger than the standard 20 gauge? I have not had but one issue with a customer who could not get the 18 gauge wire into her ear piercing....

Yes, 18 gauge is large for some, me included, so to make sure everyone is happy, I agree, telling people will work well for you. I loved the bigger wire for a better (more visual )hammered effect that’s why I chose the bigger gauge. 😊

@@DeniseMathew Currently I put this sort of disclaimer/notice on my styles that are 18 gauge for "normal" piercings: NOTE: These earrings are tapered to 18 gauge size on the ends for "normal" ear piercings but are slightly wider than the standard 20 gauge ear wires. If you have new, sensitive or really tight ear piercings these may not work for you. They seem to fit most people with mature ear piercings who have worn dangling earrings for many years with no problems at all.

Hi there! Love these, but are you using craft wire* or one with a hardness? I made several similar to these awhile back with 20g parawire, but never hardened them bc I realized I had probably used the wrong wire...now I'd love to make a few of these for my first craft fair Saturday, but I'm nervous they might bend out of shape... Any experience with "craft" wire? *I know some of you are new to jewelry, so craft wires are parawire, zebra, darice (artistic?) and all craft store brand wires. Any wire that doesn't say hardness is dead soft. (This has always been my understanding.)

I’m not a fan of artistic wire either as it doesn’t hammer well and can bend out of shape, like you said. My favorite craft wire is a silver or gold plated copper wire, I usually use Beadsmith wire as it wire hardens nicely and keeps the finish after its hammered. Of course there are other wires out there but this is my go to wire. You’re right, the term hardness is only used for precious metal wire. Good luck with your craft show.

@@DeniseMathew Thanks Denise! What wire do you like best? I found some silver and copper wire at hobby lobby in the blue packages (beadalon?) that gave a temper, I just have So much soft craft wire I'm looking for projects to use it on. If you think of any, just tag me! Thanks again, so much!
