Summerierierish That is the main purpose, honestly. xD But they're also becoming more decorative, especially for smaller ones like these since they're not really big enough for stuffing a ton of candy into.

Well I'm Hispanic and piñatas are part of my culture. You have to have a bigger design. The small ones will just get smashed and there goes your candy, jk squished candy is still edible. But piñatas are very fun to play with as long as everyone around you is at a safe distance and your actually facing the piñata.
