I was so inspired by the response from my video with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 that I wanted to see what I might do with a bit more effort and planning. I wanted to see how well it would hold up in a cinematic narrartive setting that I would typically use something like a cinema camera for. Will it replace my Sony FX3? Probably not, but it does some things even the FX3 couldn't do. In this video, I wanted to see how well the camera fared with mixed lighting, color grading, audio and some dialogue. Watch for best cinematic settings, color grading ideas, plus a whole bunch of camera placement and rigging tips.

To be honest, this is a DREAM TOOL that feels like a toy because of how fun it is. 20mm, the low light capability from a one inch sensor, the insane versatility from the size and profile. I will own one before summer for sure. Those other “creators” don’t sound very imaginative.

I’ve watch so many RU-vid “Short films”. With way more expensive cameras that are dog shit. I’ve always wondered why people can’t just get it right. Now I see they just don’t have the talent. You just made something better than all the other crap out there with a sub 1000 dollar camera, good editing and a simple story that’s easy to digest. Bravo buddy. Bravo 👏👏👏

I really appreciate how your editing levels up the capabilities of this camera! Re: Running footage of cars - it's been wild to see this little device blow up in the car community. So many videos out there now on how to use it to shoot "rollers", creative use of mounts and adapters to dampen micro-jitter and get amazing shots.

The footage itself is soooo close to something really amazing all things considered. It just still has that sort of crunchy/digital/over-sharpened look that we can’t escape from these smaller sensor cameras. Don’t get me wrong, you absolutely squeezed everything you could out of it, and it all looks pretty amazing for what it is, but the camera itself falls a bit short of your talent. It also seems to perform better when all of its dynamic range is allocated to highlights, but as soon as you have to balance with more shadows, its highlight roll off completely falls flat and the shadows aren’t as clean. Having all that said, it’s pretty remarkable just how much you were able to get out of this little camera. You’re very skilled and talented.

I'm so glad you followed up your last video because I remember some dude being really quite negative about both your efforts and the camera in general. I haven't checked the comments on this video but I'm pretty sure he's going to be eating humble pie because you proved him wrong on every level. You've demonstrated how most tools can do the job when in the right hands, but also showcased all the benefits of the tiny but brilliant Pocket 3. Excellent work!

You actually didn't sell the Osmo Pocket 3. You just sold the power of a good story and phenomenal execution - and sound. Sound makes or breaks the illusion of cinema. It could have been shot on a potato - but if the sound comes off camera or is too roomy and reflective - then the illusion breaks. Whatever the case; you sir, are a pro.

And I don't think I'll throw away my FX3 but it is really nice to have something I can just pick up and use without much stress or setup .. and know that I can get something very usable.

@@AndyRiesmeyer I agree that all the kit isn't obsolete, yet. The OSMO is still just one focal length, so there are certain types of shots that it can't do that is better suited to a more traditional setup. That being said, Andy played to the strengths of this tool and demonstrated how versatile it can be, like the wide shots of the bedroom, the car shots, and the ECU of the coffee maker. All of these, plus a few other creative angles that would be tricky to accomplish with a larger camera become easily achievable with this. Definitely something to add to the kit.

Great stuff, Andy! I really enjoyed the short film you created. I can't recommend highly enough using Davinci Resolve for your grading. The workflow you're using is working well for the most part, but it is pretty complicated by comparison to grading in Resolve. The DJI LUT is a bit too saturated, but it is great place to start for the color transform from log to Rec. 709. I usually add an HSL color space node following the LUT where you can then adjust the gamma for saturation only. I think you will love the results. It tames the vibrant colors while still leaving some color definition in those areas that end up without much saturation. More of a film response to saturation.

Nice video man. General takeaway: Yes, you can 100% film something that looks “cinematic” with the Pocket 3 - but with the right gear, artistic vision and technical skills you can kinda do that with almost any camera nowadays.

Yes it’s never been (but I guess really always has) more about “everything else” than the camera. I think the things this does that my FX3 does not make it so much easier to use and therefore more likely to make something.

you should upload that short as a standalone, and definitely make more of them like that as well. The "showcase how to use equipment in a short film" thing is a very good idea, and i like how you break things down at the end with an explanation of how you did it. the sound design was very good as well btw.

This video answers a question I had about the Pocket 3 that I could not find from DJI themselves nor reviewers, thank you for letting me that yes, it does have PTZ control capabilities. Only other questions I had other than that was if it can be used in a multicam setup and if they can all be timesynced together easily.
