HOW TO: Make drink coasters out of tiles 

I've noticed with mod podge, they will get stuck to each other, unless you put something on the bottom of them, like cork or felt. I prefer to use cork. Mod podge is also a sealer too - but it needs EIGHT weeks to fully cure, so I usually end up using triple thick. It creates a nice super shiny hardened surface. But if you have eight weeks to keep all those mod podge'd coasters to set out, then go for that. ;)

Eight weeks? Wow! I’ve had the sticking together problem as well. I thought two days would be good. No wonder I had problems.

@@lynneclark7902 No it does not take 8 weeks to cure. It will fully cure in approximately 28-30 days. To verify this all you have to do is google it.

@@michelerichter4 Mod Podge takes 28-30 days to fully cure. Please don't spread false info that is easily fact-checked with a simple google search.

I would think you could use anything. Mod Podge doesn't smear the ink. Maybe just give it a few light coats.

+Tambowz911 actually it does smear the ink.

It won't smear if you use prints from a LASER printer. Ink Jet smears bad.

I'm not sure as I've never done it. You can always try it 😃

iamsunflower2011 I use vinyl without the Mid Podge and they came out fine. I sealed it with Minwax Polycrylic... 3-4 thin coats.

Do you have any trouble with the vinyl and heat?

You put another coat of the mod podge on top as I showed you. If you want to spray something that's totally up to you but the mod podge acts as a sealant.

I have made these and even with the sealer, a cup leaves marks on the coaster. Hot mugs are out of the question. How do we make these so the mugs/glass won't leave a mark? I let them sit for a whole week after putting the sealer on them, before I tested them.

I know what you mean but I think it’s more of a pretty thing. We use ours all the time and just put a napkin over it

@@Tambowz911 How can you not know what she means? Her question is simple and direct. Coasters should absorb so if the glass sitting on it "sweats" it absorbs into the coaster material instead of running off the edge onto your table negating the whole purpose of a coaster.

Tambowz911 You can if you first spray them with waterproof sealant after the modpodge has dried over night. The brand recommended is Rust-Oleum Painters Touch Ultra Cover 2X. Matte Clear.

Learned the hard way that you cannot put hot things on these. People who make them say you can. Wrong. I've seen so many complaints about these being useless for hot things and it's true!

You can seal these with epoxy resin for hot items...2 part resin. I use it on the trivets and the coasters because sometimes the coaster is more convenient at the time.
