Hi David, love your videos and pool designs. One suggestion on the hole drilling, when the hole cutter gets the bite on the plastic pipe, stop the drill and put it in reverse. It'll give you a cleaner edge and there's less chance of the plastic breaking. Keep up the great work. 👍

I really enjoy your videos. I'm converting a concrete pool to a natural "kinda" pond and I'm using air. My 80 liter pump at 700 watts for lunch all day and night long. I've discovered building a drain field under six feet of water is a bit more challenging than a dry fit and then submerging. SCUBA along with 30 pounds of weights is part of the fun. Thanks for the fun and motivation David,

Hi David. Have you found the increased draw through the planted zone is necessary due to root development over time obstructing flow through planted bed? Do you feel at this stage that you have reached 'steady state' development of roots/obstruction or that you will need to periodically excavate parts of planted zone to remove this extra sediment? Or have you revised how many recirculating loops you install in future builds? regards, Brian

Hey everyone, I have made several air pumps using David’s design and dropping the air stone down the middle. This is so simple that I have just knocked these together. But has anyone compared the flow rate of this with the Czech design or the ones where they run the air external to the large outer pipe then attach a collar and drill small holes in the inner pipe. That would be a great video as there seems to be a lot of guess work in this.

I'm in the process of planning to construct one of your Organic swimming pools on southern Portugal, I have your book and watched your film. My question is around considering the hot climate there, would this method also help to reduce the heat exchange of the Regeneration and swimming zones? We are obviously already making the pool deeper and without insulation, if you have any other recommendations to reduce the heating of water, that would be great.

To keep algae growth down would these enhanced bubble pumps be enough or should I incorporate a deeper, larger filter bed? Or both?
@Boscovius
@Boscovius 2 года назад
Trying to finalize plans for a pool. Air lift pump has me thinking. Why not have a pipe plumbed into the deepest part of the pool. Have the water column dump out into a container in the regeneration zone that is just inches above the waterline. Large diameter flexible non-perforated drainage lines run from the sides or bottom of this container and feed a network of perforated drainage pipe at the bottom of the gravel bed. In this way, detritus is brought up from the bottom of the pool where it can be filtered in the container, and gravity will cause the water to flow through the tubes to the bottom of the gravel bed. The water then percolates back up through the filter bed, and the process begins again.
@NaughtyGoatFarm
@NaughtyGoatFarm 5 лет назад
Great videos. Just a quick question. Do you find you get a build up of solids in the bottom of the tube? I would have thought that as the water changes direction that the solids would drop out of suspension.

And additionally it interesting how the flow rate depends on size of bubles.
@nullflameboy657
@nullflameboy657 5 лет назад
ya blew it the more bubbles are in the tube at any one time before it reaches the surface, the bigger the volume of water is able to be displaced, placing the waterstone lover down increases the time that the airstone has to produce bubbles before the first bubbles reach the surface, increasing the number of bubbles in the tube at any given time, increasing the water displacement and flow rate
@usmankhanb4u
@usmankhanb4u 4 года назад
you will need to find the best most efficient combination of depth and pressure your self , as depth will decrease the pressure of air too , so its not that increasing depth will always give u more flow but at some point the efficiency will begin to decrease , there u need to install it depending on ur air pump power. but im not sure if it applies same for the chambered version .

I am wondering about calculating the flow rate of the water leaving the planted zone. I've watched all your videos, including where you explained how different sized pipe will result in different flow rates, but that didn't address the flow rate of the water passing thru the planted zone.
@738rh
@738rh 4 года назад
It does not matter as your pipes are always submerged so what leaves the air pipes, gets balanced through the regeneration zone, just displacement of water
@zeljkobanovic4398
@zeljkobanovic4398 2 года назад
Well, not entirely true. My experiments with submerged pump showed a negative pressure appearing at the bottom of the regeneration zone and reducing the momentum of water - flow rate. I wonder. How does that affect the bubble pump ? Emma made a really good question here.
@christurner3857
@christurner3857 4 года назад
Hi David, If the filtered water is being reintroduced at, almost, surface level around the perimeter of the swimming zone and being drawn back into the regeneration zone, how does the water at the deepest part of 2-3m in the swimming zone get circulated? I need a deep pool of say 3m to cope with the heat in Thailand, and am concerned the deepest volume of water will not be getting circulated and filtered.
@738rh
@738rh 4 года назад
David uses this example for people with limited space and pump power, so in your situation you would play with pipe diameter, pump liters per minute (at your depth) and amount of air stones, but you would not need to encase a pipe within another pipe, just have your pipe close to the bottom of the pool

@mateovicuna7640
@mateovicuna7640 6 месяцев назад
hi! i'm not an expert on natural pools, as i'm just starting to design one. But i have a marine sciences degree, and as far as i know, the kinds of plants that are used in these pools get the CO2 from the air, so the gas ccomposition from the water is not really important. although, it is important for the algae, but the water in the pool will most likely remain in balance with the air, so as long as the air has CO2 in it, your plants and algaes will be fine.
@benperry1464

Na mate the air pump works buy displacing water out to the pipe making the water in the pipe weigh less than the water out of the pipe the water out of the pipe enters the pipe because of this and pushes the l8ghter airated water out the top what you are doing will make the pump work harder for every liter of water it pumps in this may go un noticed if you have a strong air pump that you weren't pushing to its full abilities in the firstplace( and not running itat its best ability) but if youare already running thepumpat its best ability you wont get much gains because of the increased pressure uneed to push itdown theincreased distance You can get thesame effect buy jus keeping the air stone at the same depth and just spiraling the pipe to the surface the air will displace the same increased amount of water without working the pump harder What youcan do

@brentpal
@brentpal 5 лет назад
I think cost and maintenance? Thats what ive been gathering. u dont have to worry about sand or debris getting stuck in the air stones like you do with pumps moving the water not to mention if u have really hard water like we do here it builds up calcium in pumps.
@Boscovius
@Boscovius 5 лет назад
@@brentpal Good points! During the month since I posted that question I've had a chance to research more and I find that air can lift a column of water significantly well to do a modest waterfall. Considering the aeration already being performed in the water column, it does seem a good way to go. Only downside I see is compressor noise. A submerged pump is silent. I guess if you have the luxury of locating the compressor adjacent to a central A/C unit, very little is compromised.

Depends on local council regs on their definition of a swimming pool vs fishpond/ornamental water feature. My friend was given a whole stack of regulations when she enquired about installing a chlorinated swimming pool however to install a fishpond the only regs were distances from property boundaries and easements. She is going to use this loophole to make an organic swimming pool. She has categorised it to local laws as a lily pond/water feature..( there are no laws stating you can't swim in your water feature)

@@thebushnells Amazing,Thanx alot Nick extremely helpful info, i hope u might hve both the time and chance to show your pool setup on youtube. but please clarify, you used 3 airlift pumps(140 lpm capacity) with a single air stone connected to each for your 63,000 litre pool ,right?

@@immortalayarna at 1.5m deep, 75 or 110mm will be perfect with each air stone doing about 60L/min so x 3, so a 200 will work perfectly

David, I've always valued your videos but you need to move forward with that one. This is not effective way of either aeration neither filtration through circulation. I think the best way now is "microbubble" or even "nanobubble". With a low watt you can heavely oxyginate water, and also create a very nice streap for cyrculation. That aproach might be much more effective.

isnt this the problem of the type of airstone and airpump used and not the system?
