Hi folks welcome to Man Cave Makings with me Gus,
In this episode I have made a series of Epoxy and wood wall clocks, which I have made out of English Yew. I bought the Yew on eBay and took a gamble as unless you go and pick your own lumber then it can be a bit of a lottery of what you might get through the door, but on this occasion it was perfect and the grain, colour, and sapling edge were all fantastic.
For the metal surrounds I used 3mm x 30mm flat bar along with 10mm square bar which I shaped on the ring roller and tack welded up. As mentioned In the video the pointers are made from 6mm round bar and shaped and tacked to the square bar. It’s a simple car paint rattle can system I use and to be fair it makes a pretty decent job of the finish but I do plan on upgrading to a air fed two part paint system in the future but for these, simple is best and the final coats are a clear matt finish lacquer.
I use GlassCast 50 epoxy along with a multitude of pigments and colours and I get them from a UK supplier Easy Composites www.easycompos... so go check their website out as they have tones of great offers plus great information. Full disclosure, I’m not sponsored by anyone to recommend any items in the video and can only offer my experience of using them as a reference.
When it came to the clock movement I had little knowledge of what was good or bad as these are the first clocks I’ve ever made. I jumped on eBay again and got some high torque quartz movements and sone extra long hands as the clocks are over 400mm in diameter. I won’t put a link to the clock moment on here, not that they are bad or anything more that there is quite literally hundreds to choose from so you will have to match your movement to your needs..........but at least like me you will spend hours debating with yourself over style, size, colour and movements..........Happy hunting!
I’m genuinely interested in the finishes of wood and epoxy as there are sooooooo many to choose from. I’ve tried a few and have landed on the Minwax wipe on poly which I have found great on the wood but also it does not effect the resin so can be used across the whole piece. Let me know what your experience is and share the finish knowledge around!
I hope I have covered all the bases in the video and here in the txt but if not please feel free to either drop me a comment in the usual manner also smashing the like button obviously 😆 but if you prefer you can email me at mancavemakings@outlook.com and if you want a sneak peak at future videos then check out my Instagram account @mancavemakings
Thanks for taking time to view my content and as always I hope to catch you again!
