Eye contact is important on the dance floor periphery too. Leaders will invite with the eyes from across the room for the next dance. In cultures that make eye contact it creates a flow from one dance to the next. This form is great because you don't need to know the local language to invite someone and sometimes the music is too loud to speak and be heard anyways. In cultures that don't make eye contact or with people who fiddle with their phones, it sends the message that either what is on the phone is a lot more interesting than what is happening in the room or that if the person cannot stand to look at the leader then they're unlikely to accept an invitation. How people countries of Latin culture make eye contact with people just walking the street is so different a feel from many non-Latin ones who will look away if eye contact is accidently made. You can make a brief connection with someone, exchange a smile even if you don't necessarily stop to start a conversation.

I just started taking salsa classes and I didn't know what to do with my eyes. Especially with attractive girls I didn't want to seem like I was staring into their souls. So I found myself looking at the floor a lot but then I figured it probably makes me very look very insecure or shy 😂 I'm screwed either I thought. Thanks for the tips

Sometimes when going out to dance there are two girls and a boy or two boys and a girl. Do you have any recommendations so that in this situation all three can dance at the same time? (Because sometimes the rounds of songs are unpredictable and even taking turns someone can dance less than the others)

I think as you go along with dancing you get accustomed to not looking at the eyes at all and the whole evening can feel as if you have dance with only one person. You know the feeling, you know the moves, you know what to expect. You find out early on how good a follower is at the start and then you adjust your level with moves to suit her ability. You can be aware of her eyes out of your peripheral but but never really bother with eye contact.

Eye contact is exactly why I don't want to learn dancing. I have a friend that is into all kinds of ballroom dancing. I have never gone, but I told her I would go sit and watch her. I fear one day she would like me to dance with her and I don't want to do eye contact because I am attracted to her. I doubt the feeling is mutual but we have a special friendship.
