For a long time I was struggling with how to strengthen a large (13 x 15 inch) napkin that I wanted to decoupage onto furniture. Unlike with some crafty things when wrinkles are charming, I needed the napkins perfectly flat and smooth like a piece of fabric. I was, essentially, trying to make my own wallpaper, if you will. I tried all sorts of methods and nothing worked because a surface that large and a substance as thin as a top layer of a napkin is going to wrinkle when coming into contact with anything wet. I even tried the ironing between two pieces of cling wrap and no luck. Then I ran across a video that finally solved my problem and it is fusible web, the stuff that delicate fabrics are ironed onto in order to make them easier to handle for sewing. You just peel off the unprinted layer of your napkin, iron the printed top layer, lay it face down on parchment paper then lay the fusible web (glue side down) on the napkin, with another layer of parchment paper over it, and iron. In an instant, your napkin is like fabric! Then you can do whatever, like paint on a gloss medium, paint or stencil over the napkin, whatever your heart desires, and the napkin will not wrinkle up or tear! In your case, the fusible web would replace your muslin. You can get fusible web in different thicknesses to suit what you want. It's a miracle! Dried glue activated by heat.

These look great. I’m still learning about using fabric paper, but many of the tutorials have a stage of crumpling the fabric paper up a few times, in order to soften the paper fibers up and make the whole piece seem more pliable like fabric. It’s obviously not necessary for the projects you do, and it would alter how you made them, but I’d be interested in what you think of the idea of doing that as part of your process? Thank you.
@tebbitttextiles2849
@tebbitttextiles2849 Год назад
Hi Ann. I actually don’t crumple up the fabric paper, I iron the pieces after they are dry. If you keep the glue mixture to 50/50 it should be pretty manageable. If you place it on a soft acrylic felt it makes super book covers, book pages things like that. I also like to use it with the die cutting machine. It works brilliantly cutting out the shapes for use on handmade cards. 🙂

Thank you so much for this video and straight forward technique; the fabric papers turn out great! Definitely giving this a try soon. P.S. could you use the tissue backs from the napkins for this step? @ 12:15
@tebbitttextiles2849
@tebbitttextiles2849 Год назад
Thank you for your kind comments. The tissue paper has to be pretty strong and the paper in the layers of a napkin are too thin and will disintegrate. Hope this answers your question. 🙂

Oh my gosh--what a WONDERFUL video! I've seen bits of this technique but your video took us through the entire creation process and then you even showed us practical applications of the finished product! I'm a card maker of sorts so I was really delighted to see how you took the pear paper, cut out an individual pear and then paired (pun intended) it with the framed flowers! I live in the United States so please pardon me for asking what might be a silly question--do you have access to a product called Wink of Stella brush? I believe the product is also sold through Stampin' Up. When I saw your cupcake paper I thought of Wink of Stella for the frosting. It comes in a brush pen and you stroke the brush over whatever you want to have a coating of what I call micro glitter (it's very, very fine glitter). I also want to mention that seeing the various angles of your craft studio made me wish I were there to peek through all of it--it was sort of like seeing a candy store with all the delicious bits on display but without being able to eat them! Again, thank you so much for your wonderful video and thank you to your filming partner (I loved that he helped you find the word you wanted (script?) because that's what my husband always did for me too. I've given you a thumb's up and subscribed to your channel and am eager to see all that I will learn through you!

@tebbitttextiles2849
@tebbitttextiles2849 2 года назад
You don’t have to use muslin but to be honest I’ve never wanted to use anything heavier for this type of fabric paper. I also find it cuts on die-cutting machines. It worth trying with other fabrics such as a cotton. It all depends on what you are going to use it for. The stronger form of this is done on acrylic felt because that needs a sturdy base for the heavier paper. Hope this helps x

Warning though you can get obsessed with collecting them😀 I did and have a rather large collection 😂

Hello, I am a newbie but have done a lot of reading and watching. This was a great demo and I watched carefully, then went ahead and stuffed it up. maybe I should have left the glued muslin fabric to dry before putting on more glue and laying down the beautiful napkin because as soon as I started glueing, the wet glue started moving the napkin and making holes……boo hoo!
@tebbitttextiles2849
@tebbitttextiles2849 Год назад
Sorry this happened to your beautiful napkin , they can be very delicate especially if you have separated the layers. I hope you keep trying and don’t let it put you off , maybe try a different napkin perhaps. I know I have some very flimsy ones. If it keeps happening then miss out the top layer of tissue and let the whole piece dry it will be a bit more delicate but will still be ok. Or try putting the glue onto the strips of tissue then lay them onto the napkin. If the tissue is robust enough it should work. Good luck xx
