Before I went on Alone Frozen I handmade warm and light-weight booties using felted fur, which enabled me to survive the harsh weather. In this tutorial, I take you through all the stages of my felting process. Follow along and you’ll see step by step how the felting process works, and how handmade footwear is a must-know bushcraft skill.

When I first saw you on season 6, my first thoughts were something like "No way this cute California blonde gonna last two days!" I quickly became a fan. Happy that Jordan won but was cheering for you. I'm so happy that you stuck with it for another season and won! I'm sharing your story with everyone I know. You're a huge inspiration to all of us: men, women, young, old, etc. Thank you for sharing these skills! Difficult to quantify, but how much would you say that your custom gear made the difference to win in Labrador?

Congratulations on your win! Thank you for all the teaching you do on various topics. I have two sheep and two goats to turn into food for my family this fall and want to make a pair of mukluks for myself and some slippers for my kids with the various hides. I'd rather not remove the wool from the skin, so am planning to make the insulating liner out of it with the wool side in. I'll use the goat pelt with the fur side out for the outer layer of the mukluks, and maybe see if I can find some fur to line the top. Your booties look so incredibly warm and gorgeous. These crafts are so important to keep alive. Not only is it incredibly sustainable, but the clothing items you make and teach how to make will last for years and are beautiful ❤️

Beautiful work!!! I’ve done quite a lot of felting, and I can imagine how much time and elbow grease went into these boots! three work days? Maybe more including preparing the wool? But so worth it. And who needs the gym when you have projects (workouts) like this? 😅 I’ve loved watching you on Alone, and just ate up your book, couldn’t put it down. Thanks for sharing your journey and skills! ❤

Many years ago I made a pair of wool boots. In hind sight I should have put leather soles on the bottom. I did a similar technique as yours, but instead of two pieces, mine had two feet connected by a tube. Then after felting I cut them in half. I might just have to make another pair. Thanks for the inspiration.

Felting and Fulling. Interesting. Never knew about fulling or really felting in detail. Excellent detail demonstrating and describing. I bet a little bit of cussin. Quite the shrinkage without even drying appears. Do you put on a form to to shrink tighter with heat or just let dry as is and hope sized correctly or using some sort of guestimate for the pattern to finished product? I'll have to check your website out for maybe more info there or read into some more. Doubt I'll have the time anytime soon, though good info to know about regarding since I do have boots with the felt lining and can see a custom lined oversized pair of muc boots or similar in the future.

When was this filmed? It looks like it was prior to Alone Frozen. If so, it would be great to hear a post season review of how well they worked in the often damp Labrador climate. Awesome boots by the way. Cheers from Alaska

Yes, I filmed this the summer of 2021 as I was preparing for Alone Frozen. And for sure, I will be doing videos about how all of my gear performed out there!
@oldwaysrisingfarm
@oldwaysrisingfarm Год назад
Wonderful video! The question I have is how do you calculate the size of the original pattern? I made a set of capotes for my wife and myself with croche followed by shrink felting in a washer and did the oversize calculation by producing test swatches. Is there an analogous procedure that goes with this process? I saw that you did make a test swatch to evaluate the wool, but how does that translate to pattern making?
@BuckskinRevolution
@BuckskinRevolution Год назад
Hi there, yes, it is a similar process- doing a test sample, measuring the size it starts and size it ends up and then figuring the percent shrinkage and making your pattern accordingly.
@oldwaysrisingfarm
@oldwaysrisingfarm Год назад
@@BuckskinRevolution Logical! Do you have more wool projects planned? If so, we raise Navajo-Churro sheep and llamas (their guardians), would you be interested in any wool? I need to get a wool washing video up for my channel in the near future anyway, so it would be good timing to prep some and send it out if you were interested.
@nickkitchener6155
@nickkitchener6155 Год назад
When making the pattern, how much larger do you make it to allow for shrinkage? 2 or 3 inches?
@BuckskinRevolution
@BuckskinRevolution Год назад
All wool is different, so to be accurate it is best to make a sample and measure the shrinkage, then use that to figure your pattern. It also depends on the quality of the finished felt you are after- if you want a very hard and durable felt that pattern must start out bigger, but that also makes it scratches and less insulative, so that isn't always what you want:

This isn’t a “bushcraft” method since expensive, manufactured carding combs were used to process the wool locks. The best way of bushcrafting quality felt is by “finger carding” the wool locks.
@BuckskinRevolution
