Notice to everyone making this bait!!! Different brands of oatmeal have different absorption rates and different breakdown times. Lower quality oatmeal with smaller grains will usually not work for this recipe. Any oats that are prone to having a lot of dust will also not break down very well. If you cannot access good quality oats use about 4 oz less syrup and it should even out.
What is your favorite and best bait for twins? I'm using an equal parts mixture of millet, oats, wheat germ and corn flakes. Orange butternut flavor. Caught one channel this morning but no other fish were caught while I was there.
If I’m honest I’m not all that familiar with Twins. It’s a really tough lake to Fish. If those carp aren’t biting good you won’t catch any. My go to bait every time I go is strawberry rice or orange vanilla millet. Chocolate strawberry soymeal seems to work decent also.
How does it stay on your hook. Wouldn't you want it to stay on your hook. I've always just did my dough ball at the river. It stays on until the carp sucks on it. I was always taught when your line drops, that is when the carp is about to go with it. And then set the hook. When your rod's halfway in the water. Jk. But when your rod is bent. Then you know to set the hook. I guess that was before people really used Karo syrup and stuff. I've always just used the oatmeal. And it's worked just as well.
The point with this style of fishing is basically for it to not stay on the hook. It’s more similar to the European method of fishing, just slightly changed up by Americans. Using a fixed bait that doesn’t break down typically works better in a River, as the current will wash this bait away. Basically, there is a hook bait on the hook that comes out of the bait pile once it breaks down. (Typically a plastic/rubber bead or cereal) The carp then feeds on the pile of bait, and will target the hook bait as it usually stands out from the bait pile itself.
I made this bait the exact way you did and it does indeed pack like concrete but it takes so long to break down for me and im not sure why cause i followed you step by step. Is there anything i can add to it to help break down faster cause right now it takes like 6-8 minutes to break down
As it drys out over time it will break down faster. It really does depend on the quality of oats for breakdown time. I’ve had tubes of oats breakdown in 1 minute and I’ve had tubes break down in 20. To be safe next time you make it use a little less syrup and it should be fine. But for now take the lid off of the bucket and let it dry out and the breakdown time should get shorter.
I have made this bait 3 times but it seems that when I pack it on tight enough to cast effectively it doesn’t break down in an appropriate time. Your comments on syrup quantity confuses me. I’m assuming the total amount is supposed to be 22-23oz. Which is it please?
22 - 24 is usually how much I use. If you aren’t using jello it needs to be around 16 oz. Some of it also depends on the quality of the oats you use and how well they absorb the syrup. This can greatly effect breakdown time.
Great video , I'd like to try to catch some carp in Lakeview2 lake , I have a 12-15 lbs rods , would that work or I need better ones ? what do you recommend ? thank you
Any rod that’s medium or higher action will work fine. It’s really about the line more than it is your rod. A rod determines how far you want to throw something and not necessarily how big the fish you are landing are. I would imagine a 12-15 lb rod is fine.
