One of my favorite things about this video is how casually you say "I made a mistake" and your focus is on fixing it. The mistake itself is not at all a concern to you. Thank you for these videos, Gary!

After 3 years of successful veggie gardening, all thanks to The Rusted Garden, I am ready to make my own compost. Thank you Gary for simplifying how to make compost and, there 3 Starbucks within 2 miles of me. Will order the Back Porch Composter today!!
I have more free coffee grounds than I can manage. Within an hour of adding the coffee the compost starts cooking no matter what is already in the bin! Great compost tumbler. I would love one like that! I only have a bin and it's always full. Great info in your video!
Tumblers are awesome! I use one tumbler for food scraps and leaves for the carbon. It cooks. I also have just a simple GeoBin where I throw in more leaves, horse and chicken manure, yard and garden debris. I don't turn it. I just add more to it. It has been cooking at a consistent 130 F-140F for the last month.
Great addition Gary, I have the larger one and it is great. I think it just takes a few times to get the mix down, but it will come. Your garden is looking good!
Hi Gary, This is a great lesson on composting! You have presented well, and I'm encouraged to create my own compost! All of these things being done is better for our environment, too. Thank yo, and many blessings.
It is a good product Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Joraform makes an insulated composter that takes composting to a new level IMO, even though it is also very pricey. I imagine Mantis is sponsoring your video and it is a solid product. My BIL has had 2 Mantis' for ~10 years and it works nicely and still looks good. But, I've been a composter for 30 yrs and the Joraform tumbler I got last year was a game changer for me. (I'm not associated with them in anyway and I paid full price for my composter). On a side note - A hand full of horse bedding (wood pellets) also gets things cooking quickly ($7.00 for 40 lbs at the feed store). I think horse bedding works because of the very small particle size and it absorbs moisture. Chop and drop in the fall also has it's benefits. Happy composting.
It is sponsored but the set up is key for any composters to get the heat. The insulated ones would help here. I had to wait till temps changed. I hear horse bedding is great idea. I might take your endorsement and do a video on it.
Great video thank you. I can't seem to figure out how to compost in my tumbler here in south florida. I keep getting maggots and it's super frustrating.
The flies just zip in. Not much you can do but really heat it with a lot of greens. But it is a challenge. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. Love this. I don't have a tumbler but I do have two huge black stand still ones I have to use a pitch fork to turn. That thing gets really hot too. I can see steam coming out. I use rabbit poop, timothy hay, pine pellets (their litter material), fruit and veg scraps, egg shells, water and my wife brings tons of coffee grounds home plus the filters too. I just got done putting a bunch out to clean one out the other day. excellent video! Composting made easy. Not too hard but you have to make sure you aren't putting the wrong things in
the back post tumbler was $200 last year, It is now close to $400. this fall. This is too much for me. Can you recommend a less expensive one$ ?. The tumbler sounds like the way to go. Thank you for your video and trusted advice.
Hmm. I think it is on sale. It really is on sale for $179 mantis.com/product/back-porch-compostumbler/ Let me know if you see a different price on the link. Thanks!
I too use the k cups for compost, great tip for seed starters, I will start keeping those for seeds, yes the filters can be composted or just bury them in your garden, worms will do the rest
Are you sure about the 2 parts nitrogen (greens) to 1 part carbon(browns) in the tumbling composter? Many recommend 2-3 parts carbon to one part nitrogen.
So I found this effective. The issue is the ratings for greens and browns. They vary and might be true as you mentioned. I found the higher nitrogen gets it going. I didn't have any issue with smell till I added another bag of coffee. I just added some more leaves and that corrected it. What is the compost starter? I receive a compost tumbler for Mother's Day form the kids (do they know their Mom?!) and it is a different brand. You always have the video I need!! Thanks so much!
The mantis tumblers come with a moisture meter,, thermometer and the compost starter. Its just the microbes that eat organic matter. Any product that is a compost starter works if you check amazon. You can toss in some manures or compost from other places to help get things started. Nice gift BTW.
Very informative, thanks. I wonder if there are any health concerns with adding newspaper? Paper and ink is loaded with toxic chemicals. I am curious if the composting process breaks them down and renders them inert. I wouldn’t want my plants to uptake paper processing chemicals.
Pusang has got it. Don't use glossy paper. The flat inks are non toxic or low low toxicity. The company can tell you but for decades the made the inks safe because of the touching.
I’ve smelled a paper mill before and dear God. There is nothing else quite like it from all the chemicals. I’m always wary of using paper products that touch food sources because of it. Even paper cups and plates.
Not really. Faster breakdown is mostly down by high nitrogen and turning the pile thus adding more oxygen. So you turn a bin pile with a pitch fork or spin a tumbler. Hi Gary, thanks for your shows, they are informative. About 2 weeks ago, I put earthworm castings on the top of my vegetable container garden. Last week, I noticed a green color on the soil. Any reason how and why the green color appeared on the top of my soil ? And, do you think the seedlings still safe to continue growing ?
I went around to Starbucks and other coffee shops and they either said no or said that they regularly give everything to someone else already . Easier said than done!
They stopped bagging it this year and I dont know why. Please visit my seed shop www.therustedgarden.com for Neem Oil, Peppermint & Rosemary Oil for pest and disease management. Calcium Nitrate for Blossom End Rot and for Seeds and Seed Starting Supplies. Thanks so much!
Off topic from the video, but my tomato plants are about 5 weeks old, but they still only have 4 true leaves. They are about 2 inches above the soil. They were first started under grow lights and have been outside for about 2 weeks or so.. they were transplanted from small seed cell to 4 inch transplant cup. Am I going something wrong? Also-- how can I support you other than being a subscriber? I enjoy all the excellent information you put out. Do you do patreon? Thanks!!
Rule of thumb is 2-3X the volume of brown to 1-part greens, it also depends if it is leaves, cardboard or wood products. There are some online calculators that may help you figure out the correct ratio.
Nothing special. The microbes and bacteria are around everywhere. Hot is just a matter of mixing greens and browns together differently. It's hard to find. You have to really just search it on the internet. I dont worry about that to be honest as it is hard to find accurate number. I would just use them as carbons and mix with greens. What to do with MAGGOT issue? I made Compost in 2 buckets. In one I added all things in layer, Soil, Compost, shredded paper(Carbon), Coffee (N), Egg shells (Ca) and Veg (N, PO4) and mild water. I looks ok but it size did NOT shrink? Compost do go in size like 1/2 or 2/3 from start? In 2nd bucket I did not add much paper and I did GOT lot of flies and now it has Maggots. I did add Paper and soil, and flies went away. Now I have maggot problem. Is this normal to have maggots. I know maggot will become flies and perhaps goes away or stick around (not sure)?
Yep. Any dried browns is fine. Even shredded cardboard. I have a good supply of dried pine needles. How should I use these for compost. I also mow my grass (st. Augustin) and bag so I can save that and use it as well. and finally I have the source of Starbucks if I want. Looking for help on using. a tumbler to make hot compost.

Gary, I live in Ohio, can you use this and make compost during the winter months? Thanks for the great informative video, I have learned a lot from them.
So Starbucks sets used coffee grounds aside rather than putting them in their trash can, waiting for someone to come and ask for them? Or when you ask, they tell you come back later and they begin setting them aside for you then?
Great tip. Thanks. Thanks so much! Here is how you can support me, more videos, and The Rusted Garden... The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/
Gary, thank you for the video, appreciate you're making this available... Have a question, I cannot buy a compost tumbler but could I use a galvanized trash can with a lid instead and just stir it up every day or so? Thank you very much enjoy watching and learning...
cool! Compost is great! This "tumbler" is good for urbanites, and, or, people w/ physical problems. But, this tumbler is no good for gardeners with a little spare space and the able shoulders to turn the material.
Hey Gary,, How do you measure the materials for the tumbler? Example if one used a 2 gallon bucket, would you use 1 bucket of say grass clippings and 2 buckets of dried leaves ?
Yeah you pick the ratio you want. Use same measuring bucket for make your parts. 2:1 ratio is 2 parts: 1 part. Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
I have a tumbler using leaves and used greens & grass and I have a big container underneath to catch the water when it rains ,, It usually gets about 3 gallons of chocolate color water after a good rain . Doe's this mean a lot of the nutrients go out of the compost and the chocolate colored water is liquid tea ?
Ink on NP is vegetable based. But you can use leaves, dried grass. Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs at www.therustedgarden.com & Please Ring the Bell (next to subscribe) to get immediate real-time video notifications. Thanks
So its not exact. Coffee is more dense. If it doesnt heat add more grass. If it smells like ammonia add more leaves. But that is how you balance it Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Hey Gary I finally got my 80 gallon lifetime compost tumbler, and I have a micro shredder which I shredded up brown paper bags news papers and junk mail, and have a 5 gallon bucket of coffee ground's from starbuk's plus cutting grass today so I will have more green's, but leave's have not fallen yet, so I do have dried up brush junk from the flower bed's, so should I still use the same 5 gallon bucket of coffee ground's to a 5 gallon bucket of shredded paper. also I have scrap's and more micro shredded paper, so I'm guessing just do the 2 to 1 ratio. the direction's confused me, they said do 20 to 1 but glad you cleared it up for me, thank's Nicky still in hot Michigan
That is so exciting. So it is sort of a trial end error because some stuff is weighted differently but the video guidelines are a good start. An easier way to measure too is to moisten the paper so it gives you a better way to eye ball it for a ration. But anyway once you start it should get going in a few days. If it isn't hot enough add some greens. If it smell to ammonia like add some browns and just make notes. My stuff is fully composted and ready for next video.
Thank's waiting for the next video, my first time of composting, but not gardening, I've been raising my own food for year's, so this is a challenge for me. on the other hand, I'm growing cucumber's in grow pot's, which get full sun from when it comes up until it goes down, and they look wilted in the heat of the day, think it's a good idea to move them?? got them hanging on my close line pole's, 3 on each end, LOL, never grew in pot's either, but experimenting this year. Amazon love's me, they asked me if I was in the business field, my bank statement's prove it. another lol
It is fun. If you do shop Amazon a lot, in my video descriptions is an amazon link attached to my channel. If you shop through it, I get a percentage of the sales from Amazon. I would appreciate the support and you can just shop normally. It is free. Good luck with the composter. IT is cool as now that my fertilizer is done, it is 100% odorless and black.
okay will do thank's, got my composter going now, will check tomorrow and see how it's doing. 2 greens 1 brown, going to put my garden on facebook in a day or so and my composter also, Nicky Mullins . you can check it out if you want.
It does matter some but only if it is like freezing or stuck in the low 40's. Its a biological process so it should still start. Please visit my seed and garden shop www.therustedgarden.com for all your seeds, seed starting needs, neem & peppermint oil and more. Thanks!
Trying to decide where to place my new tumbler compost bin-I’ve heard you want a compost bin to get plenty of sunlight, so would it be a bad idea to place it on my covered porch where it only gets 4-6 hours of sunlight a day?
I dont think it needs light in theory. It helps a bit if it gets warm but your porch should be fine. Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More.

I never did. I did however take my kits from Jan and put them outside in my hosta bed. I have Lions Mane and Shitake Mushrooms growing, almost ready for harvest.
Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) I'm attempting an experiment with white button mushrooms, I'm trying both the spores and cutting up the stem. Any advice?
i have tons of pine needles but Ive always heard if you put pine needles in compost it will make it to acidic unless your wanting to grow berries its not a good thing. Also i have a question i have some larger potted plants that have a pine tree next to them they're in pots so i wasnt worried about the acids in soil by it but then i started thinking about the possibility that rain may wash pine oils from needles and drip into pots. Should i be worried about this?
It can but composting helps regulate the pH. You can toss in some lime or gypsum to when done before you use it. The acidity of pine needs just doesn't work that fast. Its a slow process and the drips wont hurt your plants.
thx for the answers :) the drips was a concern. Thank you for the ease of mind. i cant count the hours ive spent pulling needles from yard waste before adding it to compost. With all the needles i have here ill have an almost endless supplies of carbon.
one other thing i also have black walnut trees. These are also bad for garden. I didnt know this till after i had put some of the leaves and husk into compost. I went back and pulled most of the unbroken down husk. Im hoping i havent messed up my compost with it.
I have heard that grass clippings are a good source of nitrogen for only about two days after they've been cut. After that, they're considered "brown". Is that the case or is someone imagining things!?!
Didn't know that, thank's now I don't have to worry about leaves until they fall, will let the grass lay and turn brown, got it down now, if too wet, add carbon, if too dry add green, first time composting,
Carolina ph strips are inexpensive and available in most school supply stores. You'll want to use distilled water. homeguides.sfgate.com/soil-testing-litmus-paper-82864.html www.carolina.com/acids-bases-ph-test/litmus-paper-strips/FAM_895390.pr
j stamps used coffee grounds aren’t acidic. They are near neutral. As for pine needles, as they decompose, they are more neutral than anything. But if you want to be safe, try it out, and do a pH test. Sometimes the only way you can get info, is by doing it yourself and sharing the info you currently have.

You can. I like the ease of this. I had to figure out how to save to time to do other projects. I like just spinning my compost. You can use the ground, you need to turn it and with a trash can you would have to move the content. Lots of vids on making trashcan composters.
