Acts 4:36 - Acts 5:11 This is the Ananias and Sapphira incident. We have two examples of generosity toward the church in Jerusalem: Barnabas provides a positive example and Ananias and Sapphira provide a negative example. This passage presents a powerful portrait of the holiness of God and the importance of remaining truthful and faithful as God draws near. While some may want to pretend all passages similar to this one happened in the Old Testament, here we have an example of the severity of God's holiness after the resurrection of Jesus and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This passage challenges me to consider how much my life looks like Jesus and humbly to call for God's grace where I fall short! If you enjoyed the video, go ahead and hit subscribe!

I love that God also makes it possible to be holy. Jesus sets the example and opens the door for us to be declared righteous. Then he sends the Holy Spirit to empower us to walk in the light. We can't do it without him.

"What does it mean when you hear the term 'the fear of The Lord?'" I think of moments when I was one-on-one spending time with God in scripture, prayer, talking, sitting and listening for his heart, and in the midst of it something changed. Amidst that change came a recognition of just how different God is than human beings. Above it all, over everything, he is there existing, profound, time is his dominion, existence as we know it is simply a shade of a color on his color spectrum... He is. He was. That will never change, therefore he will always be. In those moments a shiver runs up my back or tingles run down my arms and I am aware that I am not like God. I am aware that even saved I still have a thirst that leads me away from God despite how gentle and kind he has been to me. I am forgiven and redeemed, and in Christ there is no condemnation, so I don't need to be ashamed but I am aware God and I are very very different. There is fear there. Within him lies the power to do all things. Literally, to do all things. That's terrifying on some level. But also within him is the heart to love all people. He is The Lion AND the Lamb, he is the Lord of Armies yet ALSO the Prince of Peace. And he has chosen to give his life as a ransom for many, it is his will that none would perish, and he has made a way that all who believe that Jesus Christ is Lord will be saved forever. And then the fear inside me gives away to elation and joy.

Thank you for that sincere answer, David! I've been reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to my girls, and just last night (minutes before recording this video) I read the portion where the children first hear about Aslan and ask, "Is he safe?" and the beaver responds, "Safe?...Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you."

Whenever I hear “fear of the Lord” I have to go to Proverbs 8:13 to finish it by saying, “is to hate evil”. However, this isn’t a passive and disengaged idea where you simply avoid evil. It isn’t even aggressive in fury towards it. The only way to counter and hate evil is to have a love for God and others, to have a heart full of worship, and a lifestyle of obedience to Jesus. Hating evil and fearing the Lord looks like throwing yourself completely in to Jesus.

That's great! Such an important point. I also hear the echoes of Proverbs- "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" and "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge." The foundation of what can be known and rightly applied in our lives is anchored in an awe of who God is and a desire to "hate evil" by living according to the pattern he has outlined.
