I was in Greece for a week two summers ago and my lunch for literally every day was pita with a lot of tzaziki! I couldn't stop eating it! I'm from Austria and I think greek food is one of the best in the world!😍
I was stationed in Athens for 4 years with the Air Force and I love the food and the Greek People. Try the Moussaka, and all the deserts too....They will almost turn you away from hamburgers.
Akis! This sauce is EXCELLENT! I made this, your chicken gyro, and Pita bread for dinner today! It smelled sooooo good in my house and everyone LOVED it! My daughter made herself a Caesar salad and put the gyro chicken on it, she was happy! 😁Thank you so much for sharing your excitement about Greek food with us! Hugs from Texas, USA.🌹
I'm from Mexico, I had the chance to try some Tzatziki back in Europe long time ago, was craving for it so bad, made your recipe today, and it was perfect! thanks Akis for this great recipe!
I made this for my family with chicken kabobs and it was so delicious and super easy because of watching you ! I’m Mexican and love love love Greek food! I love that you cook authentic dishes and not watered down Greek😏! Love your food!
I have to agree - the Greek yoghurt is the best one in terms of texture (thick, creamy, rich in flavor) - I always buy it not only for Greek dishes, but for everything that uses yoghurt as an ingredient. Thank you, Akis, for the recipe!
+Efe Can AKGÜL Yogurt as a word is a turkish word. But are you sure that its a Turkish recipe? Like the link says, there are many countries that do Yogurt-like creams (or Tzatziki) like yours and greek.
Thank you for the link. Didn't know that stuff "The cuisine of ancient Greece included a dairy product known as oxygala (οξύγαλα) which is believed to have been a form of yogurt.[19][20][21][22] Galen (AD 129 - c. 200/c. 216) mentioned that oxygala was consumed with honey, similar to the way thickened Greek yogurt is eaten today."
fidemp0ras haha "which is believed tp be yoghurt" lol you greeks are funny. according the ancient texts " greeks used to drink dark fizzy drink, which is believed to be coke"so greeks invented come then lolol
I waitressed at a “semi fine dining” Greek restaurant a few years ago and I’ve been yearning for tzatziki sauce ever since. Not sure why it’s taken me like six years to finally think “hmm maybe I should just make some myself”, so finding this video was definitely a come up. I used to sneak pita chips with a little pinch of tzatziki sauce when I’d come to work hungry and OMG it was like the best thing EVER. Our head chef was this ornery, old, terrifying Greek man named Georgios who was a real tool. Idk that he was capable of speaking to anyone in any volume lower than “absolute yelling” (unless he was talking to one of the two Greek owners-Mr. Sarris or Mr. Kanakis-since these men essentially wrote his checks), and he was less than approachable. So I’m thankful that I have RU-vid as a resource to try and get access to an authentic tzatziki sauce once again. Now if I could just find a good recipe for loukamades and I’d be SET. Also, totally agree that Greek yogurt is the only appropriate base for this, but ALSO, Greek yogurt is just better all around, PERIOD. I don’t even eat traditional yogurt anymore. “The Greek Gods” brand, honey vanilla flavor, with actual honey added is better than any Dannon, Go gurt, yoplait whips nonsense that you could try instead. Also try substituting Greek yogurt for sour cream on a baked potato. You can barely tell the difference and it’s a lot healthier. I’m just saying; once you get hooked on Greek yogurt, it seems senseless to ever go back to what you ate before 🤷🏻♀️
I love to watch Akis’s channel.I’ve been following his channel for about two years now.I love your story and think the Greek yogurt is the best.I made a video on my channel about this delicious Greek sauce, and I wrote to Akis to let him know. Thank You for sharing your story.God Bless You.At the hospital where I’ve been working for forty years now,Mount Sinai Medical Center, I worked with a pharmacist from Australia and we became good friends. She retired a few months back but we still stay in touch. She is ten years older than I. I’m 61.I met her family through Facebook and keep in touch. It was nice writing to you.I made the sauce again and I saw his channel again so I won’t miss any steps.

I just made my first tzatziki sauce 💪😋 It is delicious!!! Next step is pita bread. Thank you Akis, I love you channel! And btw the cutest English accent I’ve ever heard!❤️ Greetings from Split, Croatia 🇭🇷
I did the sauce two times so far and I really love the freshness of it! I feel pretty much ashamed now that I bought the sauce all these years in the supermarket! 😁 Many greetings from Germany!
+jmiquelmb well, there is a difference depending on where the olives come from, because the grounds haven't got the same characteristics everywhere, plus every type of olives has its own aromas which affect the oil afterwards. for example because we have many types of olive oils from many types of olives we can get our hands on the most tastefull olive oils. of course u can use whatever u have or whatever u can afford, because olive oil is expensive abroad, but if u taste the real deal, u will see the difference... whether it's greece, italy or spain u have to taste olive oil from someone who produces it, preferably a small family business.
Astrid Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm from Spain, so I buy Spanish EVOO on the supermarket because it's the easiest to find. I want to find a good local producer of olive oil nearby, but it's become more difficult nowadays, sadly. But I doubt my palate can discern the taste in a youghurt sauce like tzatziki anyway, so to me decent oil is good for now
+jmiquelmb Also useful to point out that large quantities of Greek extra virgin olive oil are purchased by Spanish producers and are blended in Spanish olive oil to up it's quality. Maybe you could contact some producers from Greece and have them ship you some. It would worth your money and trouble I can guarantee you that. The difference in taste and health benefits are enormous plus you could get a semi-large quantity and pass 1 whole year as it never goes bad.
+tsibosp Now you've offended my national pride. You better take that back. Nah, just kidding haha. I've seen some bottles mixed with portuguese and moroccan oil, but I think it's more due to cost reasons than quality. I'll stick to national oil for now, but I'll sure try yours when I visit Greece
I spend a really really amazing week on santorini, this was my favorite appetizer ❤ with pita bread, greek people cook really good and all are very gentle ✨🙌🏻
congratulations from México, please can you make a video to teach us about greek food spices and condiments. and if we can make them at home. greetings and Im your fan!!
Μια γλώσσα δεν είναι ποτέ αρκετή - ένα τρόφιμο, μια τραγωδία ...... Wow!!! I just found this by chance. I used to eat Greek food all the time when I lived in Europe, but it's hard to find authentic Greek here. I've never tried to make it myself, but perhaps I should. I'll have to make this for Super Bowl Sunday this weekend, with some lamb kabobs; I'm sure I can find some other stuff to Flambé with the bottle of Metaxa I keep hidden away........ Πολλές ευχαριστίες για την έμπνευση σας
+Akis Kitchen Well, I promised I would try to make this and let you know how it was. First try last week: Terrible!!! Hahahahahaha!!! Too much garlic I think, and yes, I put too much salt. Second try last night: Beautiful, just right. At first, not enough dill; added a little bit more, and Perfecto!!!!! The big challenge now, will be next week; Moussaka. But I will have help, an old Army buddy is coming by; he's Greek. Is that cheating? LOL!!! Cheers Akis! Have a great weekend!
Akis, such a great recipe!! I ate this delicious Tzaziki whith my mother in Santorini drinking local white wine and clapping the sunshine view... 😊❤ Love everything about Greece. This acent of yours is wonderfull for a Brazilian like me!! Tks!!
Amazing content from an American citizen mother & grandmother ( Noni ) My sons & precious daughter April ann ( who at age 19 sadly and tragically went to heaven ) loved Tazatziki sauce / Dip I hadnt made it in years ,but with fresh garden veggies, lemons & dill . Im making some today to send home with my son & DIL . God bless you , New subscriber Mrs j. Montgomery County, Texas 🙏
This is the best Tzatziki I have ever had. It is better than both the Greek restaurant versions and store bought. It is probably partially because it has more cucumber to yogurt in it than the restaurant version. ❤
My tzatziki had always been just "almost right". Never figured out the missing little tweak. Until I saw Akis' video. It was that liberal addition of white wine vinegar! Thanks Akis!
4:38 I need this image on a poster :P. Besides that, Akis, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thanks to your recipes, my reputation as a great cook has skyrocketed.
I agree. I had a greek boyfriend and i fell crazy in love,. They are so passionate in bed long and thick cucumber too lol... This chef it's so tall like a greek god, Long arms wow. ( i am a lady btw)
I grill salmon on cedar planks with S&P, lemon slices, garlic and dill then put Tzatziki sauce on top when done.... SOOOOO flavorful . I'm trying this recipe tonight for my grilled chicken
My greek aunt always puts in some chopped walnuts you should try it with walnuts, it's amazing! Edit: Putting in a whole garlic glove, imagining that 1/3 just CANT be enough, because you love garlic is a mistake! repeating: Don't put a whole garlic glove just because you love garlic!
You saved my life Akis 😂 I'm on a diet. Everytime I start to crave some tasty dishes I just grab some freshly chopped veggies and roasted chicken breasts dip in this Tzatziki to help.
Turkish fellows, you should know that only type of milk which was familiar to your seldjuk ancestors was the horse milk. So I can vaguely fit a link to "Turkish" This souce has been around since antiquity. You can do your own research, there are historical sources about it. In Bulgaria we have almost the same sauce with just a slight difference, we add finely crushed walnuts. Kind regards from the land of yoghurt!
It's very good! I always thought I just looked at the ingredients and I could just make anything! I used to chop up my cucumber and mixed it in the yogurt! The cucumber water was released in the yogurt, made it thinner, the salt in the sauce was so watery and not good! And I never understood why! I learned how to make it right!
I just made it. My daughter not s fan but oh my Goodness. I love it. I forgot how much I have missed going to Greece. Efcharisto (I don't have Greek writing here).
Used this as my base recipe. I'm not one for measuring, so I had a bit much garlic, and more yogurt so I added some lemon juice to give it down. Used dried dill so I'm hoping that's releasing its flavor while I let it sit in the fridge.
+Chris P That's how the Arabs and Iranians make their version of the sauce, it which case it would be more accurate to call it Jajik or Mast va Khiar instead of Tzatziki as every Greek I've known always use dill.
Ah you're Cypriot. Yes it's the same thing in the end. Most places uses mint. Only Greece, Turkey and Georgia use dill from what I've learnt. I like it both ways.
Akis, I use lemon instead of white wine vinegar. Lemon + dill = ❤️ so I usually put some zest in the processor with the garlic. It makes the tzatziki brighter & lighter, I think. I use it to garnish middle eastern dishes like Moroccan lentils or Foule Mudammas, especially together with chopped herbs salad (parsley, mint, onion greens). Where I live now it's impossible to get cucumbers, so I have to substitute toasted cumin seeds, which actually works pretty well! Not the same, but quite nice.
