If your chickens are docile, and friendly, you can keep setting her on the eggs. it will eventually click. I just did it today. took me about 2 hours of coaxing. Best to start after the sun goes down. I put her in a warm 3x5 pen, with a 1x1x1 nesting box. I made sure she was full, and then started setting her. Everytime she got up to wander, I put her back on.. Now she won't get off of them.

@ArcaneTurbulence

@@Razor_18 It worked for me. Though I've done it a few more times since then, I had to coax some of them for much longer. There's a hormone in their body that kicks on to make them go broody.. you just have to keep at it until that hormone activates. I have rhode island reds, they go broody pretty easily. I don't know how well ti will work with other breeds,but I'd imagine Buff orphingtons , Bard rocks, Cochins, Silkies, and many breeds of bantams would work well too since they naturally go broody pretty often.

My hen went broody so I gave her 6 fertilized eggs (2 were 4 days 'older' than the rest). She's been sitting on them for almost the full term but today she suddenly has had it and moved back in the hen house. I candled the eggs, 3 look viable - the embryos were moving, 1 was blank, 2 were full, probably ready to hatch any day now. Ugh! I don't think I can get my body heat as high as broody hen's. How long can those eggs be out from under broody hen to still be viable? I've got to go get an incubator now.
@duckymomo9687
@duckymomo9687 Год назад
Heyy ..any luck in hatching it?
@d.a.tsun5104
@d.a.tsun5104 Год назад
@@duckymomo9687 Yes! We cleaned the nest box. Apparently there's fire ants underneath it, that could be the reason she took off. We also took the opportunity to spray all chickens with Elector PSP because we noticed a rooster had mites. Then my husband put the hen back on the nest. Not long from that the 2 that looked full when we candled hatched. 24 hrs later another one hatched and then 2 days after that the last one hatched. We thought the last one wouldn't because it was well past the mama's 21 days of brooding and the 3 chicks were already bouncing around her. But she still patiently sat on that egg, so we thought she knew better than we. 2 out of 6 eggs however, were really gone. The 4 chicks are all healthy, even the late one - we did have to help the little one since it seemed too long to get out of the shell compared to the other 3. The chick at one point looked exhausted and not moving. We helped removing a little part of the lower shell where her claws were so she could kick. Then the upper shell was stuck to her head for a while that we almost called her dead but 1 hour later when we came back, the helmet came off and a wobbly but alive chick was there. Took this last one about 1 week to catch up with the earlier siblings that were already jumping up and about - she couldn't come up to the wooden platform where the food and drink were unless she climbed on the mama. Now, 2 months later, they're still following the mama who has returned to the hen house. Mama/Lisa is a very doting mama. The 4 chicks: 1 cockerel, 3 pullets sleep under her wings every night still. I was surprise that they could jump up on the roosting bar that high. The first 3 are Maran/Austrolorp (Black Copper Maran was the father) and they have feathered legs. The last one is Maran/Wyandotte (the feathers on this one is medium grey with darker grey 'lace' edge). Lisa's twin, Mona, became broody too (or she was just jealous because she went on and off broodiness). Husband gave her 2 eggs because I didn't trust she would be a consistent broody hen. Sure enough, when it's almost time to hatch, she went nuts in the nesting box (this is a different box and no fire ants). She crushed one egg with fully feathered chick inside - which of course died. I took the other egg inside and brood it in a bowl with 40 w incandescent bulb (had to replace 2x). I now have almost a month chick living in a bin in my office. Tried to sell it but no one is interested in just a single unsexed chick. Sorry for a long answer.
@duckymomo9687
@duckymomo9687 Год назад
@@d.a.tsun5104 woah! Such an awesome story!! Its so incredible that you and your husband were so invested in the hatchings. It really shows that you are caring. As for the lonely chick,check if there's any broody hen and get it to adopt it. Or try to get Lisa to adopt it. Also, I really liked the fact that you typed it out in excitement. Good luck
@d.a.tsun5104
@d.a.tsun5104 Год назад
@@duckymomo9687 I did actually try that when the chick was only a few days old. I brought her out to the coop where Lisa and the 4 chicks were usually hanging around. I put the chick on the ground in front of Lisa. At first the chick was just standing there amazed that there were other who sounded and looked like her, but Lisa looked scared. When the chick ran toward Lisa, Lisa shrieked and lurched back and then pecked the chick. The chick came toward Lisa again and she pecked her again. So I grabbed the chick before something worse happened. Now she's too small to be left outside in a cage among other chickens to socialize him/her to them but too big to be adopted by a broody hen - which we just noticed last night, a gold laced wyandotte by the name of Rachel could be broody. It's cold now and the chick has only her down coat and sparse wing and tail feathers. I will make a bottomless cage later and put him/her in it in a sunny but shaded area near the roaming ground of other chickens but take him/her back in when it's late.

I have questions. 1) my rooster mounts but he only stays for a few seconds. I grew up on the farm and the rooster, ahem, seemed to take his time, if you know what I mean… even if that meant ripping most the hens feathers out of her neck. He grabs ahold but, he sure doesn’t stay long. He’s a bit older… I’m curious if he’s going to get the job done. Next, how do I know if a broody hen is laying on fertilized eggs? I hate to keep eggs laying out there for 3 weeks to go bad for no real reason. My childhood farm didn’t have a coop. The hens laid wherever they felt safe and stayed on the clutch wherever that was. Most years we found out how many chicks there were when we saw them following mama in the barn yard. Last question, (no promises on that) when do I allow the hen to brood? I have a few that don’t act like they want to get off now but, it’s still too cold for chicks outside where I am. Fifty degrees is a super nice day and it was 35 degrees most of yesterday (50 the day before). Your help is appreciated!
@GKGPoultry
@GKGPoultry 4 месяца назад
Hey, Chickens normally mate within 3-5 seconds. Roosters that take longer are more associated with aggressive behavior versus getting the job done. The only way to know if your hen is laying fertilized eggs is to let her incubate them for around 10 days and candle them to see if there is an embryo. You should wait until summer to allow her to brood, chicks will survive better when the weather is warmer... lets say when the temps are above 80F Hope this helps!
@gamgamdabest8327
@gamgamdabest8327 4 месяца назад
@@GKGPoultry it does help. You cause me another question tho. I have raised chicks for years. I just have bought them instead of having a hen do the work. I have always kept them inside under the heat lamp until it stayed above 70 degrees outside at night. That puts me in May typically. Those chicks (April chicks) start laying in September and give us our eggs each winter. If I wait until 80 degrees to allow a broody hen to hatch… it would be July b4 I’d have chicks. That would put them into December at the earliest to start laying. Am I risking them not laying until spring if I do that? Our winters are very cold.
@GKGPoultry
@GKGPoultry 3 месяца назад
@@gamgamdabest8327 I apologize for the late response. Yes you can hatch chicks out when it's in the 70's. They will just stay under the hen ore to keep warm

If Your chickens have a problem with eating their eggs put golf balls and other hard egg shaped items in there. it should help break the habit and try not to leave eggs in there until they stop eating them! Good luck🙃 Edit: if your rooster is a lot smaller than the hens maybe that’s why he’s scared if not he’s probably just shy I’m sure he breeds them.... I have two bantam roosters they have no problem breeding the full-size hens I’m my flock 😂. One way to tell if your hens eggs are fertilized is cracking open and they’ll be a small white dot on the yoke of the egg if so then it’s fertilized...
