I’m from Hawaii and right now all the surf shops near me have absolutely no surf wax so I’m watching this before I go back into my local shop to check if they have any in stock
simple and effective learned much very quickly without all the yakkity yak if you put that bowl in the freezer it will pop right out without having to cut it.
Back in the mid 70s I remember the huge difference going from a bar of paraffin to Zog's but, man Zog's was pricey. Your homemade is brilliant and made for warm water.
It really is simple to make and if you wanted some kind of scent just use something natural like cinnamon or vanilla. Maybe a drop at the most. Thank you on my videos and thanks for watching...
It helps to soften the wax mixture. You'll know if you used too much. The wax will melt quickly from your body heat when sitting on your board. Also if you leave it lying in the sun.
👋 hi I am from India, very new to surfing! Only thing I found related to surfing is 43 inch bodyboard sold at decathlon, I drop knee ride on it . But surf wax is no where to be found , now I am making one thx to ur tutorial Any advice , I have Vaseline petroleum jelly, candles will find bee wax soon . Water temperature are usually above 30 Degree Celsius!
You just have to experiment a bit on the amounts of each item based off of my video. Not all candles are made the same. The ones I use in the video are no longer available so I had to try new ones. I haven't tried it yet seeing we have no surf right now but it feels good when scratching it with my fingernail. Your water is a little warmer than ours so a summer version should work. @@rudrakshaghaw5698 Let me know how it works out. It takes a few batches to get it just right. Yeah, victory at sea storm surf isn't ideal. We had that last week. Horrible currents.
The bumps build up after several applications. How tacky it is depends on the mixture you did. Generally, my first application is plenty tacky enough without the need for bumps. You have to experiment for your conditions. If it's too soft then you might need to do less vaseline or slightly more beeswax. I'm cleaning my board off tomorrow morning because the bumps and build-up are too much and I nearly trip on them :-) Plus, the wax breaks down after a while. Once you get a mixture figured out it's very easy from then on. I'm going to experiment with mainly beeswax but, it needs to be of a certain composition/texture.
Hey brother thank you so much... honestly I am tempted to try it on top of the old commercial wax, even though you said never to do it :D i trust you because you say you've been doing this since before i was born! at the same time its not so appealing to take the wax off. Can you share why you recommend to never use it on top of the commercial wax?? thank you!!
The only reasons I suggest not using it over the older regular wax are that the homemade wax is a bit harder and it will scrap the other wax off and you won't get a true feel for the mixture you made unless it's on its own. That's a long sentence :-) I clean the wax off of my board once it gets to the point it starts breaking down or piles up too much. I use a 4" wide metal spackling knife to scrape mine off. Then I wipe it clean with rubbing alcohol. It only takes about 5-10 minutes. In my latest batch, I used different candles that seem to be a bit softer, and that made the wax a bit easier to apply. Just a beeswax smell. Good luck on getting it dialed in for where you live and surf. Thanks for watching...
Probably not because you then lose the needed texture for applying it to the board. You may as well try a candlestick but, that will be too hard. If anyone finds a scent-free alternative to the jelly let us all know.
@@williamarseneau Oil like that will make it very slippery. I once tried a drop of all-natural mint oil for some scent but it ruined the texture and the stickiness. Even the jelly once melted by leaving it in the direct sun too long will get greasy.
I use it as a hardener and it's natural. My surf wax smells like beeswax. You can try it without if your water is very cold. I seem to remember needing it to some degree. Any hardware store carries it. I get mine free from a beekeeper. Thanks for watching...

I just now saw this. I was born with birth defects on both hands and feet. Some skilled surgeons did great work way back in the 60s and early 70s. 13 surgeries by age 12. Forest Gump type braces until age 10 or so but just below the knees. My sarcastic answer would be, use a knife to get the candle wicks out of the melted/liquified wax and not your hand!!

If it were that easy surf wax wouldn't exist as we know it. Most if not all candles are too hard. The same with paraffin wax blocks. That's why I mix the 3 substances like in my video. It helps break it down and soften it up so it rubs on easily.
@@khizarshaikh5652 Not that I'm aware of but try googling a wax similar to beeswax. I'm fortunate enough to know two beekeepers that give me mine. It lasts a long time because you use so little of it in the mix. No place with 100% beeswax candles in Dubai?
Possibly. It would only take a tiny speck the size of the eraser on a pencil. Or a drop of food coloring. Make sure it's not oil based. The beeswax might alter the shade of the color.
I literally eye it out just like you see in the video. The constant measurement is the 8 candles that fill the pot but that can vary on what candles are available in your area.
Either less vaseline or more beeswax. I generally change both slightly. Remember, it has to sit and cool completely to harden to its final state. Usually a few hours or overnight is best.
