Traditional Isicholo is a hat hat worn by Zulu woman(bride) during ceremonial occasions. Isicholo are constructed by weaving grass into a unique shape, covering the woven structure with fabric before hand sewing the cloth to the woven frame. African beads may be beaded by hand in bright, geometric designs around the base of the hat. They may be used functionally or as a wall or home decor piece. A basic isicholo hat can cost between R150 to R1000 depending on design and complexity.
My Isicholo hat is finished! My friends are impressed with the hat and they appreciated knowing the tradition of Zulu women wearing the Isicholo for special occasions. I want to share a pic with you but I don’t know how to share it. Thank you, again! I love your work.
I want to make it for my wedding, but I want to make some white beads that will partially cover my face sort of, if you know what I mean. So instead of lifting up the Vail after I say I do. Beads will be there be white beads. I'm thinking I will add some matching velcro so I can remove it after for pictures. Do you think that would work.
@beautarie. Your work is beautiful. As a South African woman of Nguni descent I would like to correct you. The name of the hat is Isiqholo originally worn by married Zulu women using their own natural hair. It is not a wedding or bridal ceremonial hat, it is a traditional head gear for married women. In our Nguni culture your status was differentiated by clothing, beads hair style etc. So in the Zulu culture married women wore their hair in ISIQHOLO shape. But nowadays it is worn as a fashion accessory.
@@melissasturgis trace your ancestry, if they were slaves you are most likely from west Africa and few parts central Africa ie Zaire now Congo since it was the "fastest "route compared to the others.. Though tribe would be quite hard to trace as they are very many
This is brilliant. Take it from a South African who stays with Zulus. You have done an amazing job. I will definitely try this one. Thank you so much for sharing.

@@Beautarie I made it stif by using a very small crochet needle, and if its not because of the yarn I used the spray that you can make your hair stand straight up , dont know how theuy call it.
Or use the cardboard, cover with fabric and put your crochet pieces over the fabric. Same color yarn/fabric - lots of possibilities! Hope that made sense and helps.
Thank you my beloved sister I will be trying the headset soon I must gather the materials together first then I will begin to do this it is not as complicated as I thought it would be but believe one thing I will be doing it and very soon I think they will make wonderful gifts for my daughters
