Thank you for sharing this! I'm learning to work with copper wire. I've always loved copper jewelry. I lived in the western half and traveled often to Arizon. That's where I first saw jewelry made from copper other than the therapeutic copper bracelets that you can find even in your local pharmacy. I had an idea of what had to be done but you show several techniques which is very helpful. I love to create whether it's painting, pottery, knitting and cooking. My interests are many. Thanks again. I plan on subscribing. 💕

I used small vice and same thinckness stick as jig for cutting. No need special pliers and can saw with downwards motion.

oh man. well time to make a new setup XD mine doesn't work well but i guess i have to work a bit on it as my "dovel" is just a metal tube. hollow thank god. but yeah i will do that as i will be making a chainmail out of steel rings. so cutting with pliers and then sanding down will be to long and hard. but the dovel technique was brilliant.

Thank you for this video it help me to understand why I do not like using the tool, right handed, still the dowel is best or I will also us a leather glove cut in a way to protect my palm & fingers and hold the coil as I cut. I do enjoy your videos, thank you for taking the time.

Thank you, very informative. Was just able to make my first 935 Argentium jump rings… The only info you didn’t have was what size saw blade but I found a good size vs gauge chart for blades online. I’m so happy to have this under my belt. Cheers 🙏🏼🤙🏻😎

Just throwing in my bit of expertise here, there are lots of methods for making jump rings, all with pros and cons. Some methods are cheaper, for example wooden dowel coils, but sacrifice the uniformity of the ring’s inner diameter (wood is softer than any kind of metal and will get “compressed” to some degree as you coil, leading to rings that are a bit smaller than you might have intended. It is also more difficult and/or impossible to remove a tightly wound coil from wood). But if your project is large, and small imperfections in ring size will likely go unnoticed, this might be just fine. Some methods are faster, such as rotary tool cutting or cutting with a pair of snippers, but again, cons exist. The gap created by the thick rotary cut off wheel (thick in comparison to a jeweler’s saw) will cause your rings to have a slightly oval shape when the ends are pressed flush together. Snipper-cut rings will never have a perfectly flat ends that saw-cut and rotary-cut rings will have, so they’ll always have a slight…divot? …snag? (I dunno what to call it) that is not suitable for soldering. Specialized tools offer more precision (and maybe quicker cutting….. maybe), but the con is that they cost your hard-earned cash. Am I saying everyone should invest in such tools? Not at all. It all comes down to your own needs (and to a lesser extent how tough the metal you’re using is… there’s a big difference between aluminum and stainless steel). If you’re doing a big chainmail shirt or piece of clothing, then imperfections will largely go unnoticed, so cheaper, quicker methods will be just fine; if you’re doing small jewelry pieces like earrings, bracelets or necklaces, then you’ll probably want to use a metal rod for coiling and cut them with a jewelry saw.

Loved this! Honestly I think the wooden dowel is probably the simplest way and I’m sure cheapest way to go. I just like that you can saw straight through it. I have seen others use a drill for coiling the wire. Putting the end of the wire into the drill and then it coils around the bit itself.its a bit of a quick way to coil the wire also. Then you can just take it off and saw it or as some people would rather snip each one. Way I don’t know lol but some people like it better than the saw. I myself would rather just saw it.

Your tools look like good ones. Who makes them? I'm tired of Amazon's cheap tools that tear up, the hassle of returning them and trying another pair of pliers is too much!!I'm new to jewelery making, I wish good pliers were out there somewhere. I liked this lesson. Thank you

Lindstrom has the best cutters. Also have good pliers as well as Eurotool and Beadsmith. But the key to pliers is to polish the inner blades to a mirror finish with red rouge so as to not leave marks. Someone told me this 30 years ago while I as standing in line at the Tucson gem show. I never heard this anyplace else.

Great demo but isn't the fixed stop pin on the pliers is a design flaw? I use all sorts of random items to make jump rings and I knew cutting jigs existed but I hadn't seen the jump ring / coil cutting pliers with the jig until today when I was shopping for tube cutting tools. I think I must buy a pair! Your explanation of why the stop pin is there sounds logical but it seems to me they'd be more useful if the stop pin could be removable so longer coil lengths could be fed through the jig and wire wouldn't be wasted. Copper is relatively inexpensive but precious metals can be pricey and shouldn't be wasted. If the pliers weren't so expensive I'd buy 2 pairs to test my theory but I digress. Again, excellent demo and thanks for showing all the different tools. Much appreciated! Cheers! 😀

Thank you for sharing your tips. Do you have any recommendations for holding/cutting 10 ga copper wire for large links (approx 20mm)? I've recently purchased a Dremel but haven't used it yet. I'm not sure how to hold the coil while cutting links this large. Any suggestions? Thank you!!

There are so many copper wires on the market. I don't know which to buy. I would preferably like a wire that can be worn all the time, like in the shower etc. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks for your videos, very informative.

Really neat! Dowel seems much more practical than those pliers (unless you held them in the vice?). Where's there a UK source of reels of Cu wire please?

One more thing... At 00:27 into the video, I really like the style of the curvy links in the bracelet at the bottom. ♥️♥️♥️ It took me a minute to figure out how simple (I "think") it is to make. I'm guessing you start out with straight pieces of wire all the same length, loop the ends in the same direction, and then shape the straight part of wire around something round to give it a curve, right? All links are exactly the same but they're attached by turning 2 links in opposite directions and then sort of crisscrossing them so one ring of the link is on top and its other ring is on bottom of the pair, right? I'm on a mission to find out! LOL! Love your channel! ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks for sharing. Cheers! 😀

I liked that chain idea too. I reran it several times at slow speed so as to catch the pic. I think I would make it different than you. I would make some giant jump rings and then cut them thus giving me my uniform length and curve. Then I would just curve the ends. I think it would be too difficult to put the center curve in last, not first. IMO

Thank you for sharing. My husband recently purchased the tool for me, for our 43rd anniversary❣️ I haven’t used it yet so now with your video I can make some today. Can the tool be used for oval jump rings? Regarding using the dowel, do you make a slit down the length of the dowel before you start cutting, and after you cut the jump rings....do we cut off that piece of dowel? I just subscribed to your channel.

Thanks! I didn't know those pliers existed. Do you have a favourite saw blade size for 1mm-ish rings?
@LilyTree
@LilyTree 6 лет назад
Yes, I was surprised when I first saw them! I tend to use 1 or 1/0 blades. You can use up to possibly a size 4, but the larger the blade, the wider the gap it will leave, so smaller rings can look a little deformed when closing that gap back up again. I have a video that goes into sawing in more detail - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ovTqMjOFEFs.html - and the chart for blade sizes is on my blog at www.lily-tree.co.uk/single-post/2017/09/09/How-to-Saw-and-Pierce-Sheet-Metal All the charts I've seen only mention sheet, so I just equate wire diameter to the sheet thickness.
@Vikette1000
@Vikette1000 6 лет назад
I've been using size 2 and finding the rings a bit difficult to close seamlessly with the gap, especially if they are to be soldered. Time to drop a size or two then.

What does the bees wax do?
@akakemushi439
@akakemushi439 Год назад
This reply is 2 years late, but the beeswax is a lubricant. It helps the saw blade move smoothly through the metal as it cuts and prevents “snagging” or “catching” which can easily snap your saw blade in half.
