This is almost the same method that Prisoners of war in stalag luft 3 used to make the air vents for there escape tunnels. They used "Klim tins" powered milk tins they got from the red cross. They used them as air ducts to supply sir to the diggers and tunnel. You missed one step. A surviving prisoner of war in his 80s explained how they made it. You got it almost the same. Except he said bear down on the edges with a butter knife to crimp them together. It holds them tightly. It's amazing to think. This was used by prisoners of war to escape the Natzis.

It says in Slaughterhouse-Five that the prisoners made their supply hut ratproof with flattened cans as well.

Hardly considered a steel plate more like a tin curtain

This is a great technique thank you for sharing it!

in the UK our tin cans cannot be cut with scissors. you can cut a soda can, just, with a good pair of scissors. we's need tin snips to cut actual tin cans (like the kind beans or peas etc. come in) but I think the same technique would work for soda cans

Yup.but tin snips/airline shears are ok for a one-off job. Sadly,it blunts them,so I also tend to stick to aluminium cans.Particularly useful if making a hydrogen and oxygen splitter(electrolysis)for the kids. Anybody can make them mixed,but splitting them properly requires more intelligent design. I only use the harder tins for making heat collectors(easier to drill or punch the bottom of each can and discard the lids)

The Culinare MagiCan removes the metal lip, so could save you some time with those snip snips. Other brands of can opener may also do this :D

Every can opener does. Just have to place the blade differently

You used your can vertically to cut lid off. Now if you turn the can opener horizontally you can cut the lip off the can with the can opener with ease. Try it it's easy. Upgrade your scissors please.

This is a good idea. Do the panels hold together well? I am thinking it would be good for an insert into a cupboard or fence panel. Do you think it would hold up?

Not unless it is soldered, wired or somehow made so that it's not loose and sliding back and forth.

@@porky379 What video are you watching? Nowhere does it say or show aluminum cans.
@porky379
@porky379 3 года назад
@@cameobabec968 so.....if they were iron or steel the items inside would rust the cans or the moisture in the air would rust the cans. That's why cans are made of aluminum and not steel or iron these cans are not rusted yet they have gone through packaging, shipment, store shelving, and then god know how long this guy had them. If they were steal or iron they would have been rusted by now

Thanks for the video. Can water or gases pass through the section where the aluminum sheets are folded together?
@DeanIsJesus
@DeanIsJesus Год назад
It wouldn't be entirely airtight and it would get more air type the more precisely you'd hammer the folds together, but you could easily double the folds with a pair of sheet metal vice grips and greatly increase its air tightness with further hammering on the seams. 😊🌎✨
