How To Make Laser Cut Terrain Kits Look Good For Warhammer 40K

Laser cut terrain kits are a great way of filling a table with servicable terrain without breaking the bank. But with a little bit of work they can be transformed from something that looks like a 3D puzzle, into terrain that actually looks good!
In this video I take you through my process for improving laser cut terrain kits, using the TTCombat Power Station as a basis.

Some fantastic instruction there. As much as i love MDF kits, they do have some limits that need mitigation. I think the most telltale sigs are the burnt edge plugs, but wiping down the MDF and light sanding before assembly makes a load of difference in how much post assembly fixing is needed prior to painting. I also find that enamel rattle can primer makes a great MDF sealer.

Thanks dude. I'll have to try the enamel spray cans, they're not something I often use. I've pinned your comment to the top as there's some great advice in there!
@rustedbeetle
@rustedbeetle 7 месяцев назад
@@OffbeatBuilds the enamel acts as a water barrier, similar to the PVA step you included in your video, but without introducing water to the MDF surface to soak up. Once you have it sealed with enamel, you can go back to water based acrylics and go to town. Wiping down the MDF sheets with a damp, but not soaking, cloth cleans up the surfaces and helps remove some of the material that settles on the surface while being cut with the laser.
@trystongilbert1837

Do you think that a spray matte varnish (like Munitorum) would also seal the surface?

I can higly recommend priming the "runners" black before assembly. It saves a lot of time and hassle later, because you dont have to get into the insides of buildings and narrow passages. A cheap automotive matte black spray will do, and you only have to do a quick touchup after assembly

Jeez, you won speedrun for best unknown to #1 warhammer creator. No messing about, clearly presented ideas and visuals, and a fundemental understanding of whats good and bad about current warhammer models and associateds. (That atv video was great btw) I would personally suggest that with laser-cut kits, you can use plasticard sheets and trace the existing patterns etched into the flat surfaces beforehand, then after smoothing apply the sheets to keep the detail instead of losing it entirely. This is a lot more effort but with the sides of your generator hubs it's quite obvious something is lacking. Not that it looks bad becuase of that, just a balance between time and quality that can be managed.

I know you said that you forgetting to fill in the gaps on the control room was an oversight, but I actually think it looks good that way. It looks constructed from metal panels and installed in place. The rest of the building looks great with the gaps filled but I'd call this a happy accident, at least in my opinion.

@OffbeatBuilds
@OffbeatBuilds 7 месяцев назад
Thanks dude! As @araqiel2759 said, they're called 123 blocks, they're used by machinists for clamping down work when milling, but make for an incredibly useful tool for assembling models with 90 degree corners, holding things together while drying and I've even shaved down a couple of clamps that fit into the holes to act as a "third hand" for holding small parts. I saw Adam Savage (Mythbusters) use them in a build years ago and bought 4 of them and I can't think of a tool that's offered a bigger quality of life improvement!
