Sorry to put it so plainly: This design is really dumb. Three bearings (overconstrained) on a flimsy (compared to the taper shank) shaft and to top it off an oil seal behind the tapered roller bearing to take the thrust. Curious when he'll find out how well it'll work.

Not sure how the tapered roller bearing acts as a thrust washer. Seems like the seal would get squashed between the roller bearing and tapered mandrill.

does it matter if i'll make mine with only 2 bearings? one normal and one conical. Do you think it will have side play or something? I have made the shaft only long enough for 2 bearings. Should i just use 2 normal bearings or should i include a conical one as well ?
@howtousemetallathemachines6478
@howtousemetallathemachines6478 7 месяцев назад
Use one normal bearings and Roller Bearing , It is suitable for light workpiece. Live Center Applications heavy duty bull nose live centers are typically used in applications where the center hole is a large bore or when the application calls for the machining of pipe or other cylindrical components such as hydraulic cylinders. Oil field maintenance facilities, manufacturers of power generation components, and pipe manufacturers all rely on the durability of heavy duty bull nose live centers. These centers are specifically designed to operate in hostile environments where work piece weights and machining forces are extreme. Bull nose live centers are constructed with larger bearings to carry these heavy loads. The strength and alignment of the fully supported bull nose head provides longer center life when machining large work pieces. The rigidity of this live center helps dampen vibration and resist chatter.

@razvanon
@razvanon 7 месяцев назад
5:55 did you make 70 degrees steep angle because the steel part was kind of short for a 60 degrees angle or was it just your personal choice? I'm asking because i have a similar stock of about 80mm diameter and about long as yours and i would have preferred 60 degree angle but i think it's too short for that
@howtousemetallathemachines6478
@howtousemetallathemachines6478 7 месяцев назад
The 70 degree center angle is commonly used for larger parts. We see it most often in steel mill rolls and similar heavy shafts. In the US the 60 degree angle is the most common while 70 degree is industry specific. You also see a few 90 degree centers. In Europe you see 60 degree and some 75 degree centers.
@razvanon
@razvanon 7 месяцев назад
i've already made mine 70 degrees like yours with one normal bearing and one conical. works fine but the only issue is i forgot to machine a little bit of clearence on the inside nose and i think the first bearing rubs a bit on the steel inside as it spins but i could see it already improved on that. Not sure how i'll take it out on the future because i already knocked out the shaft because i forgot to put grease on the conical bearing and the first normal bearing remained in place. Any idea how to take the first bearing out ?@@howtousemetallathemachines6478

@@razvanon You have to drilling the live center. so that you can take out the bearings with a steel rod. Please observe safety precautions when drilling.

Can you show us your measured runout on the cone of this center ?
@camillosteuss
@camillosteuss 2 года назад
Of less importance, as this is an example, if you want to, you can take time and effort to grind the thing on the lathe on the inside and the outside, center turn the tapered shaft, even center turn the conical part with a custom jig and buy some ultra high precision bearings from timken or skf and voila, a virtually 0 runout centre, but this is to show your ass that if you dont need a tir of 0.00001` you can easily make it yourself, and even then, but it will take more effort...
@mqeqeshe1
@mqeqeshe1 Год назад
This center has the same amount of runout as his 3-jaw chuck. Probably .002-.005". Way too much for a live center in my opinion. Before the 2nd operation you should indicate the part concentric with the surfaces machined in the 1st operation. Otherwise you lose your concentricity when reversing the part.
