Supper cool i have used quarters and made a few rings but I like what you are doing hear. I like the idea of attaching to an hatchet. Just not sure how. Ideas please

I'd suggest using deeper stacks and drawing them out more; the layers get thinner. You can also drill/split a billet and weld it back together with silver solder for a very cool effect

Instead of acid etching, just take a regular blow torch and heat the surface to darken the copper to a deeper golden orange color, will really make the pattern pop.

Great idea, thanks!

Have you ever thought of a patina solution instead of an etchant? Smooth surface and a good contrast in the pattern.

Just saw you on Big Dog so I check a video out and wow I had no idea you could this ! I watched another person making rings with this and I’m seeing it can be made ! Thanks for sharing ! I’ll be catching up on your videos, I want to learn this ! Where I live I can’t find anyone that blacksmiths, I’m hoping this art never stops !

I'm glad you found this video helpful! It's a very neat process and is a lot easier than one would think. You have so much control over the pattern in the process. It's very easy to make some very beautiful work. Check out abana.org and click on Find a Blacksmith. You punch in your location, and it'll tell you if there's anyone in the area who is affiliated with ABANA (Artisan Blacksmith Association of North America) and that'll at least give you an idea.

Ok that was fun and cool. Thank you for sharing!!✌🏻

Pretty straightforward! Really doesn't take a whole lot of heat. Thanks

You can't do this with nickels right?
@gwcstudio
@gwcstudio 2 года назад
Oh - also you can just drill a hole through the stack, put a piece of copper wire in and tap it with a hammer, that'll hold it together till you weld it.

I was told in a different video that its very important to continually clean in between steps. Is it true?
@wesley7910
@wesley7910 5 лет назад
Depends on who you ask. Play it safe, clean it as much as you want

Cleaning in between steps might be more of a pain than it's worth. I think the most important thing is to make sure before you heat it up and try to set the weld, make sure the material is absolutely clean of impurities.

What strength solution can you use for maximum billet breed rate?

Anyone know if regular natural gas or propane will work for this?

If you have a rolling mill use nickels and copper pennies. Mill to same thickness cut strips Stack forge w then hammer, twist square and thin out to useful gage Cut to desired sizes or patterns. Or u can use silver coins if desired. Just ups the value. 😉

I wonder if you could use wire to wrap the coins? I think using some steel..or even some copper wire (might add to a design) and that would make it super easy to heat. if not...does anyone know?

I saw someone use steel wire in another vid and it turned out alright!

I've been searching for Makume Gane resources for 3-4 yr. now and behold you and Alec on the same day have a tutorial on Makume, so nice! I am going to make a set of Pattern welded and Makume Kitchen knives for my son and his girlfriend as the both enjoy cooking. I hope to make my youngest sons and his girlfriends wedding rings for them when their time comes.

Out of curiosity, what's the legal standing of forging currency?
@minecraftTIME82
@minecraftTIME82 6 лет назад
Perfectly legal, the law that states no tempering currency is ment for making one peice of currency look like another, example like making a dollor look like 100, but the distraction of currency is legal

In the UK forging coins that are in circulation is unlawful due to the Queens head even if it isn't illegal... God bless America.

I had this video planned since Sunday.. As I was rendering it, I decided to just, browse around RU-vid. Then I saw that Alec had posted one on Mokume just 6 hours prior... There was a facepalm there for that one. Talk about coincidence. Thanks for the comment

This is the cheaper way of doing it. Alec bought overpriced pieces of pure copper and nickel.
