@@EliminatorPerformance That's awesome, I need to find my own Joe near me. This is the first video of yours that I've watched, great info. Would love to do this as a part time gig.
Great video! I grabbed some lawnmowers for free last summer and had planned to fix them up and after watching just one of your lawnmower videos I am positive that I can fix them. Thanks so much for the informative videos, you're doing a great job!
If you can watch one video and fix lawnmowers, then you are a genius. It takes reading, learning, mistakes, listening, and hands on experience to be good at mechanics.
Wow! For the man that always has the perfect cut grass, part inventory on hand & the most affordable part source. Only if Hank Hill had a push mower instead of a rider this is a real King of the Hill
Hats off to you for quality work when selling a mower. I've been doing it as a hobby for years now. I do my best to provide a quality mower to a customer but do not offer warranties. I would not have any clue how the mower would be treated or maintained once it leaves my shop. Sold as is , is always in my ad with all the parts and service that have been done to it. Thanks for sharing, good video
Awesome parts yard! I wish I had a place like that near me. I’m glad you made this video, I do the ame thing with old mowers too. I so enjoy it and offer a good mower at a good price. I also tell the customer knows the machine is AS IS no return, cash only. Great hobby too. Thanks for doing this video.
That's my kind of fixing up stuff. Lawn mowers is my first thing I fixed lawn mowers for a cheap price name your price And I'll clean up carbs for living
This is a great business to get into... Once you know how to fix them, you just have to know how to price them. I sell them all the time on Craigslist. My last one I got for free, and I sold it 3 days later for $90. There's a bit of an art to it, however... Some people want to pay less so they can resell them. Sometimes it works in your favor, depending on the condition of the mower!
Christopher Valdés Yessir! Love working on lawn mowers it's easy work, not very labor intensive, I get to work with my old man on our own time schedule! We have a lot of inventory, stuff sitting around waiting to get sold (like our 5 snow blowers) but we wait till winter to get top dollar!
I'm addicted to it! I'm always on Craigslist... I know some of the people who I complete with on a first name basis! I love the ones that don't run, I can get them free sometimes. Or old Toro mowers with loose handles... Snappers and Hondas that need the diaphragm replaced or a jet cleaned. I give the ladies a personal guarantee if they question the reliability (it's mainly reassurance). And the newer ones always are good sells because people see that they were barely used! It's a no-brainer!
I've sold probably about 15 of them, it's amazing what people just throw in the trash... it hurts me when I see scrappers take them to make like 50 cents when I could make $50-$100.
In my experience, spraying carb cleaner (i.e., Gumout) in a carburetor will generally stall a running engine, and not allow an idle engine to start easily. What works best for me is to spray **Starting Fluid** in the carb (i.e., ether) to see if an engine will run. Great video, and thanks.
I just fixed 4 Briggs and Stratton mowers, all 4 started with carb cleaner. You have to spray appropriately 2-3 seconds into manifold. If you spray too much you'll flood it.
I'm starting my own business in this exact thing but I'm a Lil more about fixing them vs selling them but I do sell some . It really is a great deal of work plus I stay home anyways to watch my kids so I have the time to wrench on mowers or blowers great video love this
diy technician thanks a lot! Here's a tip, if you're selling mowers, take a trade in of their old mower and give them $20 off, then you can fix that up and sell it for maybe $80-$100 and keep doing it... I've made all my money off of buying and selling, the repairs just keep me busy here and there
Eliminator Performance yea that's exactly what I plan on doing thanks for the tips .... I found 13 brand new mowers an snow blowers for 680 I'm gonna try an sell all of them for 200 an fix all of them
diy technician keep at it everyday, and you'll always have something to do, every machine is different, even if they're the same, most if the time, the problems are different!
Great video. I am a chemist but it does not pay all the bills . I am starting a mobile welding business for the weekends and also rebuild old garden tractors with my specialty being sheet metal repair on the decks and stuff. Keep up the great work and I hope to start making videos also.
I I got a hold of 8 push mowers. I went through each one New blades, cleaned carb.an rebuild, oil spark plug air filter an cables if needed. On avg. I had $60 invested in each. So I was expecting $100 for each. My motto was if it did not start on the third pull I would not sell it. I took them down to the local flea market. An sure enough everybody an his brother was there selling used mowers. Some of these guys were asking $30 -$50 bucks for theres. I did not sell a damn one. I did get offers of $30 -$50. Once a lady bought a brand new mower an could not get it to work. She asked me to take a look. I told her since she just bought it take it back. Have them fix it or get a new one. Well the reason she did not take it back was because, now this is a push mower. She said she put a gallon of oil in it an it would not work. Yeah, it had oil flowing out the airfilter down the side of the engine an deck. So I worked on it. Got a new air filter an cleaned it up. Called her the same day to pick it up. I called her twice a week for three months to come get it. Only charged $20. Two years went by never heard from her. So I sold the thing and the most I could get out of it was $125. This was a self propelled with a bagger new it sold for $325. In my area I $200 for a used push mower would be a hard to get for some one like me. But I have noticed that the pawn shops an local repair shops are asking close to that price. When I first started working on mowes some 10 yrs ago. People came to my home day an night. I was working my ass off. I would go to the store, when I got back there might be a mower sitting in my drive way for me to work on. Nows days No matter which direction you go someone has one for sale and / or they works on them. And some of work that these guys do is amazingly Bad. The local repair shop will throw some work my way when he has more work than he can handle. He knows I do good work. I still have a few people who bring me there mowers.
my grandpas teaching me about fixing lawn mowers right now and we make very good money by putting em on FB marketplace and outside my house. I made almost 5k last summer off of mowers alone
great video! where’s part 2? There’s some guy that calls the local radio swap shop every day trying to sell a bunch of lawnmowers because he’s too old to fix them. I’m going to give him a visit as soon as I get this one I drug out of the woods running.
You've got great information to offer the small engine community and being a Tuber with nearly 8,000 subs, I would like to hopefully give you a little helpful constructive criticism. I'm not dissing you, so please don't take offense. The use of "Uh" and "Um" is drowning out a lot of your information. If you consciously think about not saying Uh or Um, your content will be much more professional. I had the same problem, and I solved it by someone also suggesting to me that I am conscious of using those uh and um's. Just trying to help out EP!! Great information! Looking forward to more from your channel. Cheers! Zip~
ZippoVarga Hey thanks man, and yea I just edit it out now lol the majority of my vids are unscripted and on the fly, so I basically think it up as I go! Great constructive criticism though, I appreciate it!
I'm glad you appreciated it and didn't take offense Brother! We're all here to help the community to keep their machines going and to fix them. I appreciate what you do! Zip~
ZippoVarga literally editing a video now and it's unbelievable how much I say uh or uhm without even noticing while I'm saying it lol I'll have to make some changes, because it's a b*tch to edit lol I guess I'll just have to think about what I'm going to say, before I start filming!
Ok I hit the like button and I subbed you also.. I didn't check out your channel, but I am impressed with this video...... You talk good sense and know your parts unlike some others I know............ I am a small engine mechanic also...... For over 30 years on and off. More on than off LOL.... Do a vid on painting the engines for us... Or do you have one already ?? I paint mine when I rebuild one..... I love those older L heads in the 2 to 5 HP range they are bullet proof and easy and cheap to do a complete rebuild ...... 50 bux for chrome rings and a gasket set. A couple hours time and a good deck I can sell one for 125 to 150 ... You must be in Canada for a 65 dollar coil ??? New here in South Louisiana new is 30 to 40 bux... I do save everything I get and tag it or use a paint pen......... Plus Tard Mon Ami ...........
Boo LuQuette Hey thanks, yes I'm here in Southern Ontario Canada, this was part 1 where I just focused on finding the mowers and classifying them, and I never got around to part 2 yet, will most likely post that video in the Spring of 2018 as we're focusing on Snowblowers now that the winter is here!
If you get a lot of atleast 50s - 60s mowers I am a collector of the Antique/vintage 1800s - 1969 mowers riding or push I wouldn’t mind visiting your place I also like Antique/vintage chainsaws and small Engines in general from that decade span
Spirit of the wolf Bush Wiccan witch love the oldies! They sure don't make em like they used to! I'll have a 1964 Snow Bird Snow Remover video coming up this weekend, I bet you'll like it! Be sure to tune in and don't forget to subscribe 👍
Great job on Part 1 a little East Side Dickering when buying and a money back guarantee at full asking price when selling always maximizes your profit. Will you be showing finished products in Part 2 or 3 and letting us know how long it took you to sell the mowers?
Congratulations on your latest achievement of 20K+ views. Achievement is defined as "something that is done through effort and is a result of hard work." Watching your videos proves that you have made this accomplishment as a result of this definition. Once again congrats dude and keep up the good work!
That thumbnail at the beginning and that guys place looks like mine right now. We have a place called Dupies that has the same thing. Its a small engine mechanics dream. I think after a while its best to sort out that shit and scrap things out. I had a HR 110 I couldnt even find new parts for and NO BODY had anything used, let alone much info. I put it out by the road.
Where do you guys find lawnmowers and small engine equipment for cheap or even free? I’m having a hard time looking for stuff to work on, I do small engine repair as well
Enjoyed the video. I'm looking for a good place to store my repaired mowers when I have excess inventory. Is that what you use the soft-side garage for, that is behind you in an early part of the video (at 4:15)? If so, how well does that work? I used my garage this summer because the mowers were selling as quick as I could get them repaired and listed. Now that September is here, things have really slowed down. This was my first season to repair and sell and I have sold 38 units, but I have about a dozen that will probably need to wait for Spring. Thank you.
cherokeefiddler thanks Cherokee! And yes, we call them "carports" as they are normally the size of an average car in terms of useable square footage. The problem is they shred apart, the doors are the 1st to go, then the bottom of the main cover! This is all from high winds as we live close to the lake (lake Erie) and the wind comes right down the driveway and that thing makes quite a bit of noise too (from the plastic flapping in the wind). But they're cheap! We got this one for like $250 on sale and it's lasted a couple years... Planning on buying a 12"x12" 8post metal Octagon enclosure, they sell them at Canadian tire for like $999 so a little more money but it'd be solid and we could board the sides for winter!
1:04 "Witheaught" and 1:14 "Abeaught" Welcome to Canada. That's a ton of mowers out there! 2:14 Nobody uses that....ever. It's on the rabbit from the time it starts to the time it stops. I threw mine away when I gave my mower a kick ass Van Halen 5150 paint scheme.
Great vid guys, I'm wanting to get started in this I became disabled a while back and can't live off that I'm pretty mechanically inclined. Welder, machine repairs and cars but I never really messed with mowers much beyond basic spring tune up. I'm learning on my own from books but could really use help, I'm not gonna lie I'm intimidated by the riders and tractors, snowblowers. No experience in small engines, probably psyching myself out but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as far as books, schools, certifications anything please and again thanks for the vids I subscribed. Please keep em coming and pls. Help. Thanks
+John Worley machines are compromised of many parts, but it's much easier to split it all up. Take a snow blower for example, any moving parts, but there's a front auger housing, and a rear end. 2 main parts, of the front Auger housing, there's the driveshaft with a pulley that goes to a gear box. Once you break down these larger segments, you'll be able to further break them down into smaller sections. Always take things 1 step at a time, figure out what you don't have to do, then you'll have a better understanding of what you need to do. I believe that's "process of elimination". If a machine "turns over" then you have a good battery, good wiring, good solenoid, good safety switches etc... If it doesn't turn over, check the battery, if it's fully charged then you look at other areas. Always go step by step. Finally, the best way to learn is to just dive Right in, and get some experience. Buy a cheap rider and take the engine apart, put it back together and see if it runs! The worst you'll do break something fairly inexpensive, but it'll be a great way to prevent it from happening on someone else's equipment! I hope this helps you John, and you can always RU-vid stuff now a days, it really is a great learning tool! Best of luck!
+John Worley as for school, I went to college to get certified to work on small engines and I went back for my automotive technician license, so I can work on cars/trucks too. You don't really need school, I just honed my already aquired skills there. Basically, I've been doing this stuff since I was about 14 years old. So for 13 years, I've learned quite a bit, but I'm still no master mechanic that's forsure! I learn something new every day, even a guy like me gets on RU-vid and watches a video on an engine I've never worked on, or a tool I've never used etc... Start out small, and work your way up!
Is it possible to use a mower deck from a different riding lawn mower brand than mine? I have a riding mtd (columbia) and was wondering how in the hell to get a used deck. Columbia is impossible to find used. Could I use say, a cub cadet, troy built or yardman?
I have stopped at 1969 because I believe the later stuff isn’t as well built but I would maybe take garden tractors 70-71 stuff as long as it still has starter generator
Eliminator Performance Great. There's a tractor I'm looking at buying (that runs now that I've worked on it heh) for a fair rate but without the owner getting kijiji'd.
You say find mowers i need to get rid of the ones i already have taking up my yard space just think they could be sitting in your yard but they do have a ton of usable parts the wheels those cost a bunch buying them new but i still don't need all the shit i have almost like that but i have more riders sitting and engines sitting around to
Guys like these get hassled too by the man and then recently, our repair center closed for good. Im not really flipping anything because I never see regular roadside junk like 10 years ago. Maybe 1 a year at most. I'd rather sell new ones somehow.
Hey does this guy have any old Koehler k series engine out of the old Ford lgt165 I have one I want to restore it the engine is missing the head thanks Dave
Never got around to it lol not yet anyways, I will have part 2 sometime this spring, and part 3 will follow maybe in the summer. I got quite a bit of footage to go through!
Yeah he pretty much does, whenever someone needs a part he takes it off the scrap mowers. The ones we purchased was ones he was flipping, and we cleaned them up, tuned them up, and flipped them ourselves!
Depends if your local, I probably wouldn't be interested in shipping anywhere outside of Southern Ontario to be honest. We order most of our parts from Stens Canada, but they require you to set up a business account. If you're in the lawn care business, I highly suggest checking them out!
Ugly mowers don't "steal" as easy. A tip for city dwellers. However resale is low for the same reason. You see people going down the sidewalk with lawn equipment. SMH
Lol yea there's no doubt, some shady people in that town... They'd regret it tho, the guy who owns the lot is super nice but also like 6'5" 350lb just massive lol
