I just quit my corporate job to go all in on tattooing. Thanks for making these videos, sharing all your knowledge and the inspiration brother ! Your content is awesome🙏🌞✨
Everything you talk about I feel man. I’ve been self taught in tattooing because no shop wanted to apprentice me. I only did lettering and never anything else. I ended up taking a long break because I was discouraged and went back to work. 5 years later I opened up my own shop and starting doing more than lettering. I know my clientele isn’t going to be beating down my doors so I work a full time job and tattoo on my off time and weekends so I definitely understand not getting done tattooing until midnight and not being home with the family. My clientele is building up slowly but I know it’s not where I want to be. So I decided to take less hours at my full time job to be able to be in my shop more and it’s scary. If you ever decide to do seminars or some kind of classes I’d be interested. I’m definitely jealous of your smooth shading.
It’s hard to get started up and create your business, stick it out you built it they will come. Maybe try hiring another artist who has established clientele and just needs a professional environment. The cut or percent they give you will help with the hours you took off of the other job. Here in Ohio 40% is a pretty standard cut of the overal tattoo cost.
Bro… you give out priceless information literally things people won’t share that makes you a legend. It’s only a matter of time that you blow up on RU-vid. God bless you and keep doing your thing. I learn a lot from you
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 yea I feel like I’m ok w talking about these things just because I know a lot of ppl won’t apply it and there will be a small percentage of ppl who will and that’s who I am aiming for w these videos
@@ad742n yeah bro there’s people out here that real take your videos serious. I’m actually going to download them and keep them in a flash drive and re watch/listen when I tattoo for motivation
I've been tattooing for about 6 months self teaching cz it's hard to get those apprenticeships at the correct place. It's hard but yeah ur words are inspiring and deffo gives me the motivation to carry on and become a full time artist.
Thanks for dropping this homie, i really needed to hear this 🙏🏼 Times are getting tough atm with work not coming into the shop I'm at. It's only my second year tattooing and I've seen it all when it comes to both dry season and money season. I was considering getting a part time for the winter season since I noticed for the last 3 years that it gets stupid slow and I've been paying bills now for a few months. But watching your video and a few others have convinced me to try some new things out, especially with the social media game since I'm really bad at it. I'm only 20 so i really don't want to take the 'easy' way out and instead take my chances and get my name out more. Hope all is well for you and your family and thank you for inspiring me and others.
You got time bro I started tattooing at around 18 and started my apprenticeship at 20 I’ve been through what you are going through at the moment just believe in yourself and put in the work if I can do it so can you
You are the most real tattoo artist on RU-vid because I’ve never heard someone be so honest and give top tier advice. Definitely motivate me and my dream is to tattoo I’m looking to become an apprentice right now. Just working on my art/portfolio. Please make more videos like this!!💯🙏
I’ve been a apprentice for 4 months now at 18 fresh out highschool. My mentor seen himself in me. He told me to be there every day in the shop and watch. So that’s what I did I was there 10am-11pm everyday. Never missed one day. Finally after a month of being there I got my license. I had a side job but wasn’t getting hours because I dedicate myself at the shop. I lost my job for not showing up. Made me so mad because I dedicated all my time to the shop and went broke because I wasn’t getting income. After 2 months of being there I was frustrated. Finally my mentor rewarded me with a spot in the shop for showing up. Those first two months I was doing tattoos here and there on friends to practice. The third month I sky rocketed with the ink. I was doing decent but really good tattoos. Never rushed, made sure my lines were crisp, shading crisp. I started to promote like crazy. Finally I started getting attention and help from my mentor too with him posting me. I started getting clients. This month I started getting booked every week. I started making money super quick. I’m so thankful I dedicated my time in the shop and just never gave up. Only 18 4 months in and Everyone is saying I’m next up in my town. Just keep promoting and really putting your hours in the shop. Study and learn. Watch and listen. Check out my insta @chucky_cruz_tattoos💯
I’ve been watching your videos for a while now, I’m pleased to say I’m glad and blessed I stumbled across your page! I too wish to be a full time artist and your words are so motivating and encouraging. If you ever open your own studio I will try my best to work for you!
Already tapped in with the shorts. It's been 3 weeks I started a channel for the shop n shit is surprising how quickly its growing! Rly like what u doin now with you page. Ppl like this shit 🔥
Pterodactyl!!! Such a great video! Thank you so much for sharing you insights and experience! I'm 49, and a 1st year tattoo apprentice. I wanted to do tattooing for over a year and kept drawing and building my portfolio. I was finally given a chance at a studio in a small country about 5 months ago, and next week I'm going to my boss's other studio in another town for the first time! I'm so excited! Watching this video has really inspired me more! It was exactly what I needed to hear. As an apprentice I don't get paid, it's tough. I can't buy all the equipment I want, i forget to eat and drink when I'm at the studio...haha all the things you mentioned. But I absolutely love my job. It's the best thing I've ever done because I love being able to create art. I just know that every hour I'm at the studio, every sketch I draw, every time I draw up a stencil, or just watch and talk to other tattooists in the studio, it's money in the bank in the future. Haha I have so little money, but I have such a cool job and I'm the happiest I've ever been 😀😀
Do you work? How do you manage a job and going to the studio? Hearing you’re 49 I’m assuming you might have something already established so was curious
@@c0wboys4life youtube just deleted my original reply!!! I dont know why they would do that grrrrrr! Anyway I'll reply again and hopefully it wont be deleted. So, to answer your question, no I don't have another job. I'm very, very lucky to receive government financial assistance where I live. 5 years ago I lost my whole 25 year career in construction as a house painter due to severe heart disease. My government helps me out, which I'm extremely grateful for, due to my physical limitations because of my heart. I've used almost all my retirement savings, and even with government financial assistance, at times it doesn't cover all my expenses, but it helps me train in the tattoo studio. But that financial help will stop when I start getting paying customers. I had been so depressed about everything, because no one wanted to hire an middle aged man with heart disease. But I found my mojo again in art and tattooing! It was difficult and it took a while, but I went back to the basics to find what I truly love doing. At school I was good at art and I absolutely loved drawing so I started doing that. It gave me a second shot at getting back on the horse and training so I can have a new career and support myself again again :)
@@marktuohy1088 Appreciate the reply and best of luck to you. I’m currently trying to find the right balance of working and trying to get a apprenticeship that would even make sense to realistically do but cuz of my schedule I feel like nobody will take me cuz I don’t get off till 5 so between that and commute to even get to any of the shops in my area most of the day is gone just to be a apprentice and hope for any valuable lessons in learning this. Trying my hardest to go the right route and not self taught but can’t even do that because I don’t have my own place and cost of living here is just crazy high to have something where I can practice in my own space….I admire you taking that leap still tho I’ve been stressing about to turn 30 this year and still not a tattoo artist and life stuff in my my 20s holding me back but here you are at 49 taking on a apprenticeship kinda gives me some relief honestly in that it’s not too late for me to pursue tattooing
@@c0wboys4life keep going brother! You'll find a way! Every little step is progress. I wish I had started tattooing 30 years ago, but maybe I wouldn't have appreciated going through the whole process like I do now. I look back over my life and I've life a large part of it in fear. And yet I've faced death more than a couple of times and cheated him, I'm a heart attack survivor, have heart disease, I know what it's like to ride in an ambulance and seeing the look on the look of fear on the paramedics face as he's thinking I'm gonna die and there's nothing he can do... It's a very sobering experience I'm not gonna lie, watching a person in front of you who thinks you're gonna die. I've always lived in struggle town and I know how tough the real world is out there. But I just wanna say this, live your life for you. After I lost my career, sometimes I couldn't leave my bedroom for weeks. It hurt me physically and mentally, but I just knew I had hang on for dear life and to ride it out till things got better. My recovery was a long and difficult. But during that time, I wasn't going take any old job that came along. I knew my opportunity would come if kept searching, I prepared and kept believing. I could feel it in my bones. I was gonna do it, or die trying So if I could pass something on to you that might be useful, I would say that if you want to be a tattooist, then go and find a way to live your life how you want it to be and do it. If your current job stops you from getting that tattoo apprenticeship you want, then change your job. Nothing about becoming an apprentice will be easy. When you can afford it, buy fake skin, some needle cartridges and a cheap Dragonhawk tattoo machine and just practice. Those things will help you. Keep knocking on doors of studios, because someone will eventually open it, and you will get a shot. Invest your precious time and your resources into yourself and your future and keep thinking all the time how you want things to be. If you want it, then you have to take a risk and try. You owe it to yourself. And if you die trying, then you can at least rest peacefully knowing you did everything you could to live the life you wanted. You can do it!!
PTERODACTYL!!! and what is the new video that you've been trying to put out but hasn't been working out? is there any way shape or form I could help? because I just wanna return the favor man your videos have helped me a lot, I'm barely starting my journey of becoming a tattoo artist I'm 19yo and 5 months in. and I know this path I'm taking is a marathon, not a sprint and your videos help me keep that mindset. and like you I know I don't wanna be working for someone else, especially someone who doesn't care about me, because I know I can do something and be someone better than working a regular job. Obviously there's nothing wrong with that I'm still working at the home depot but I realized I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I can actually make my dream into a reality if I put in the time and work and stay dedicated. and I know this is what I truly love to do.
It’s a surprise for now but I know when the time is right I’ll be able to put it out thanks tho I appreciate that Yea bro just take one step at a time it took me a while to understand that this is a marathon even now sometimes I get impatient and have to give myself a talk to relax and appreciate everything I already have
yo bro i got a question when you go between the different washes how do you not get them mixed with each other could you explain how that works. for example going from a half full wash then going to a 2 drop wash wouldnt it make the light wash darker
What would u say to someone who lives in a state where it’s the law to go to tattoo school before U can work in a shop? I see a lot of negative feedback and comments about tattoo schools but here in Oregon you legally have to go to school before you can be a licensed tattoo artist?
Hey man, fellow starting artist here, here in NJ, you need a 2 year apprenticeship or go to tattoo school which are around 15k, I started practicing on fake skin a couple weeks ago, and have already done some tattoos to friends and family, most of them for free. I do everything at home, I have a space dedicated for that, Try to find a way through it, I plan on getting a portfolio before going to a shop in the city and asking for a spot or apprenticeship. Hope this can give you an example.
@@raynieregantier8260 thanks for the response bro , but that’s not what I’m asking. I’ve been tattooing for a year and do it from home I’ve done dozens of tattoos and learned everything from RU-vid plus have been drawing for a decade , what I’m saying is that it is the law in the state of Oregon that you must complete tattoo school before you can be a licensed tattoo artist and work in a shop. It cost around 12k here in Oregon. All the videos on RU-vid about tattoo schools are very negative and I’ve even seen many times that certain shops will not even hire you if you went to a tattoo school but here in Oregon you have too to be able to work in a shop so it’s frustrating trying to figure out what to do.
What’s up bro If it’s is law that u have to go to the school so u can tattoo at a shopthen just do it bro It’s just an obstacle u have to go through Ppl hate on tattoos schools just cause it’s a gentrified type of apprenticeship basically but if it’s what u have to do over there then do it
Bro, don't be gettin embarrassed about creating art and refining this skill in a barbershop especially when you got them nastyass dawgs runnin'round...foo. My culture before Europeans, only "medicine men" were the only ones that did these things.
