How to make my bully boss treat me better is explored in detail in this video. Should you start with HR? The response is a resounding "NO." This is a video about a boss who is a bully--ergo the title bully boss. It is not about a boss who is a true narcissist--so totally self-centered that he/she cannot function without lavish praise and abject groveling loyalty. The typical bully boss is a difficult person, but not a narcissist--just to make that clear :)

Thank you Dan, my boss constantly disrespects my peers, residents, vendors and myself in front of people. I have reasons to believe she’s insecure and is afraid of failure, so she uses us to hide her insecurities and show dominance. I told myself today, that I will not allow her to continue her behavior but first I want to plan accordingly before I go ahead and speak my mind.

Expanding on what you state from what I’ve learned in my own therapy as I process on my healing journey and this is a great tool for anyone to learn and utilized. CBT thought separation is worth mentioning here regarding talking to the self. DON’T: I’m upset. I’m angry. DO: I have the thought that I’m upset. I have the thought that I’m angry. Separate the self from the thought/emotion. Thanks for a great talking point, Dan! Happy New Year!

Thought separation is an excellent term. My comment as a lawyer who has dealt with these cases is above but part is very relevant to what you have said. No offense to Dan because he is a precious gem. I wrote (in part): 'Once we start sliding down the slippery slope of NOT becoming accustomed to being in a work constructive environment, it WILL gradually chip away at you and transform you into a shadow of your old self. Fixing that can take years, at LEAST! You would not, presumably, remain in a space with deadly radioactive material, right? Think of it that way because that is exactly where you are. Think technical like this rather than personal. Get out of that environment asap and, in the meantime, create a protective bubble around yourself that nourishes and validates your value. Let that poorly managed company or workplace stew in its own rot or implode. Goodbye. Take care of YOU.'

i have been in this job for 19 years and retiring soon. I have tried over the years to educate my current boss of 15 years that we needed a different form of treatment from her.... she always took it personally and defensively, with no coworkers backing me up. She would calm down for about a week but would go right back to her old ways. I do take some of the blame for not engaging more often against her bad behavior but I cannot take the blame for her return to bad behavior every time.... I will be leaving a letter of suggestions for her when I am gone. You're awesome, by the way!!!

@@TheWizardOfWords Dan, I love you, but I am appalled at this particular question if it was not a sarcastic question. I am appalled because anyone who has experienced being singled out by such a boss would know that they intimidate weak onlookers to side with them and prevents them from speaking up! I was in the same situation. Also the boss used falsified navigational phrases in front of other bosses to make it appear that she was NOT the antagonist! Witnesses said they didn't want her to turn on them so they stayed quiet! But then when I left they asked ME for help as she turned on them! They left the job themselves in the end due to the constant toxicity! I had worked there for 14yrs and the last 3yrs was when she came along and formulated a toxic culture because I was showing her up as it emerged she had no managerial qualifications when I started a management course myself and she was unable to help with it. She was 1 boss-step above me.

@@l8diva I think Dan offers great advice here. However, as both you and jennifermoran5489 have experienced, there are certain people upon which this "hard reset" advice might not work. In my case, my former boss would EAT UP any form of deference and humanity that anyone paid towards her. To her, it would come off as weakness and it would add to her arsenal of manipulation. Mind you, I did not put up with her shenanigans. I took responsibility, but in my own way. She feared me to a certain extent. But that didn't feel good to me. That's not the kind of working relationship I want with my boss or with anybody. It became very exhausting working for a person who played too many games with too many good people.

I have a bullying boss who knows I think he's bullying and he knows I think he's insecure. It's pretty much impossible to work for him - if I improve my performance, he finds ways to cut me down, if I then am down, he's disappointed about me not trying harder. In front of others, he's fake understanding and compassionate to show he isn't bullying me, because he knows this reputation has developed about him and it could affect his authority and his standing with other employees. Going to a nuthouse every day. Worst thing - there are many co-workers here who bully me too, because they see the boss do it, so they just jump on the bandwagon.

I think your suggested responses for instance to deal with nasty people's comments and similar have very good suggestions, but lots of your suggested responses are incredibly lengthy and complicated, some 5 sentence replies etc.... The thing is when person is starting to give back lengthy response, it automatically starts to sound like they are really affected by whatever person said, or putting lots of effort in response and that makes the nasty person automatically win. In the cases like that the shorter sentence and fewer words is more power.

How to avoid a boss that looks at you sexually? He may be attracted to me, or maybe he just likes making me feel uncomfortable. Either way, it's real and he does it every time we interact. It's creepy and makes me feel uncomfortable. I don't want to interact with him at all at this point.
@TheWizardOfWords
@TheWizardOfWords Год назад
O L--There is very little you can do about the way people look at you--even though I certainly know what you mean. Unless your boss says or does something to make you feel uncomfortable, there is nothing to say to him. Having said that--try to interact with him only when others are present; that will take away his chance to give you creepy looks. If you MUST interact with him when no one is present--keep your distance and minimize eye contact.
@TheWizardOfWords
@TheWizardOfWords Год назад
Problem is--reading a look is totally subjective. It would be helpful if someone were around to verify to O L that the boss is actually leering. E.g. if he looks this way at everyone--he's not leering; he may be just plain creepy-looking, which is sad for him.

There is definitely sexual chemistry. I avoid him like the plague if possible.
@TheWizardOfWords
@TheWizardOfWords Год назад
O L, you're either attracted to him or find him creepy; you can't have it both ways. Or you have a vivid imagination, and you wish he were flirting with you. If you're sending me mixed signals, I imagine you're signaling him too. You're watching to see how he looks at other people? Come on now. You want him to flirt with you. You've been thinking about this. You've determined there is sexual energy. Good grief, O L, it is difficult to determine if you are bragging or complaining. You're probably thinking about this guy way more than he's thinking about you. If that's the case, be glad and stay away from him. You're playing with fire.

What if you've tried talking to your boss directly and they are just not receptive -- and direct, one-on-one communication with them just devolves into toxicity from their side? Should one ever escalate to HR?

@@TheWizardOfWords Wow, thanks for responding! He is making insulting, derogatory, and offensive comments about me being in a protected class (my boss sees these as "bad jokes"). This has happened multiple times, both publicly and privately, and even in front of some of people I manage on occasion.
@TheWizardOfWords
@TheWizardOfWords Месяц назад
The next time he does this in public or in private, I suggest stopping him and saying: "That was not a joke; it was an insult and I'm asking you to stop speaking to me in this manner both privately and publicly. If you don't stop, I'll ask you to come with me to take up the matter with HR." Now here is a warning. He could fire you and have the full backing of HR and you'd be out the door. Or he might stop making the comments, but know his feelings won't have changed. Or he might persist and you go to HR, in which case they might call him in and tell him to knock it off or they might fire you (in a couple of months, so that it won't be seen as retaliation for your going to HR with a complaint against someone HR likes). OR OR OR You could go to HR with your resignation letter in hand and DOCUMENT comments this guy made and when he made them, so there is no question a report was filed. But I'm serious when I say you should do it with resignation letter in hand--combined with a letter that DOCUMENTS this guy's conduct. Tell HR you are prepared to walk out the door momentarily unless HR agrees to shut this guy up. And THEN you have a decision to make--when they equivocate, which they will. Perhaps you can tell that I favor leaving such situations and finding new employment because I have little faith that HR will do anything for you unless they believe your harassment was so severe that you might take legal action against the company. THEN HR WILL JUMP THROUGH HOOPS to resolve the situation. They work for the company, not you--and that's how they act. They don't want a lawsuit. LASTLY--if the situation is severe, is affecting your work, and is persistent, seek legal advice ASAP. An attorney will probably tell you to go to HR with your documentation, and if nothing is done--go back to him/her and they'll lower the boom :)

My boss had very few of these qualities and still they were putting down me with their comments that i lack soft skills. When asked for specific they had no answer. All this talk was during negotiations of salary : clearly they were manipulating me so I would not negotiate much.

I'm feeling like a failure because yesterday I met at the park with my bosses and they said "I have to let you go". The reason they gave me is that I'm forgetting the processes while making the projects. Which is jewelry etc. The projects always turned out even if I forgot something for a moment because of anxiety. Deep down I feel it was something deeper. Can they get to this point because I don't have the same belief system as they do?

These are some helpful tips in language and communication. I’m in my 25th day on the job, my birthday was last week. They want to take me out Monday, however, my boss snarls at me when I ask questions about work, yet she is also direct. Should I go or turn it down?

Hey Dan! I have a good topic for you: How do I respond to unnecessary criticism at work (I‘m talking about when you made a tiny human mistake, it‘s sorted out but your boss still makes a comment to ‚remember to do X next time‘). Essentially how can we deal with a nitpicky colleague that isn‘t quite a bully but their comments are quite demoralising? Mine always makes unnecessary criticism about my work and sends a smiley face - so annoying!
@TheWizardOfWords
@TheWizardOfWords Год назад
Give me a specific example, Kristina :)
@kristinafreeman911
@kristinafreeman911 Год назад
@@TheWizardOfWords So for example, I was asked to proofread something for my boss (all my colleagues are non-natice speakers but speak decent english). He sent it via email. I took a look, rewrote the text and sent it back. Then a few minutes later he asks about the salutation at the end (Best regards, X). Apparently I had missed that part out; I didn't think it was necessary to proofread it seeing as we have automatic salutations in our email template anyway. So anyway, I answer his questions about how to write the 'Best regards' part and all is well. But then he sends a snarky 'Remember to copy-paste all the message next time ;)'...I just saw this as a totally unneccessary thing to say when the issue was resolved and it was because of human error! It was essentially like asking me not to make a human error again which is not possible surely! And also he puts smiley faces all the time which comes across as really sarcastic. So yeah, this was the unneccessary criticism I was talking about. Thanks!

Thankyou. Dan can you answer or do a video on what to do or say if a person in charge of you is not passing on your work for the decision makers to see? It’s exhausting because I put all this work in and it disappears. I’m isolated in a small team and not allowed to talk to the CEO, and it seems to others, about my work apart from through her.
@TheWizardOfWords
@TheWizardOfWords Год назад
Whatever you do, do not try to go over the head of your boss--ever. My suggestion is that you have a meeting with your boss and ask specifically about a project or projects that were not passed on, and request guidance as to what needs to be improved before these are presented to the CEO.
@MirageandReality

@@TheWizardOfWords Thanks for your reply Dan. Yes I have developed enough intelligence thanks to you not to do that. That’s a good idea to phrase it like that. D.O.C. I came looking for you today (On YT, not irl). Apparently many people use communication skills as a weapon instead of using them as a tool (to build something better). Have you ever heard of people using “The Broken Record” as a technique to not engage in anything the other person is saying? What would D.O.C. do in that situation?

I would respond to the first with: "I am surprised a professional such as you would make such a personal comment that offends so many in this company. I wouldn't expect that of a leader who has the company's best interests in mind." And then I would walk out before he makes another smart remark, and I wouldn't look back. In re the second comment I might say "Really? So you give yourself approval to be offensive and blame the one you are offending for hearing you? Really?" That is how I would respond, shortly before I left his/her employment.

OKay a bit iffy about your phrasing. I agree that if you are engaging with a mature, reasonable and professional adult, this i your way. Perfect. But, that is not often the case for the employee and if they 'take responsibility' in any way, it will be twisted (if necessary) and used against them. So, Joe apologized for his difficulty in doing his job effectively.' Even better: 'Jan even apologized to Sara for allowing her work difficulties to deteriorate.' Bye Jan. Your best advice Dan, is: (in my words) is this person a mature, reasonable and professional AND self-aware (hence mature) adult or will they most likely emotionally explode, cast the interaction as you attacking them and wreck your life. If you are in an environment that is not conducive to grown-up communication skills, GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do NOT subject yourself to the emotional, and potential professional, damage this person can and will do to you. Once we start sliding down the slippery slope of becoming accustomed to being in a work constructive environment, it WILL gradually chip away at you and transform you into a shadow of your old self. Goodbye. Take care of YOU.

Hello Dane! What should I do if I had these conversations with the boss and still no change happen, they harass me, degrade me every meeting, I just signed off last meeting and I was on sickness leave and they tell me what should I do in my personal life, it is getting to the point I am losing my self and developing PTDS. I am in academia and I couldnot handle one for one since it is repeated over and over, we will have a conversation with the ombudsman man, bullying officer and me. I don’t know if I should be present if I have the PTSD? But indeed my expectation is to see if there is a form of hard resent and getting better which I doubt, it seems that having ombudsman and bullying officer isnot a good idea this should happen in Jan and boss was notified. I am just drained and I cannot take it over it now more than two years.
