A warning to the gardening community about wood chips. Be aware if your chips are dusty or gassy to wear proper respiratory protection when moving the product. Or using in livestock/pet areas. This is from personal experience, twice, I have contracted a condition called farmers lung. For me debilitating flu like symptoms. With the money saved pick up a harbor freight or 3m respirator. Not a n95 a true respirator. I am not saying do not use free wood chips just be aware of the danger.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy 2 года назад
This is an important comment. I'm sorry to hear that you came down with this condition. There isn't much else I can add to this. Before moving woodchips make sure they're well watered. Dusty conditions allow mold spores to be more easily airborne. When turning any type of compost it's a good idea to use some form of close fitting mask. If fitted correctly it should be a little harder to breathe through.

Wow!!! I sooo admire the way you're both using everything to make what you need!!! So easy, cheap and practical! That's so great cause as these compost bins have no bottoms they can feed also the trees while the materials in those bins are braking down! So brilliant! I don't have a land but if someone has the land this is such a brilliant way to make his compost bins and in the same time he can feed the trees! That's the way how you can perfectly work with nature!!! 👏👏👏

Thanks Gary! Great video. About 16 years ago I used a very similar setup (only without the cardboard). Those of us about to be inundated with oak tree leaves in the Fall, need to remember to add a variety of other things to the pile. Oak leaves really need help to break down. Wish I had access to chicken manure, but I did find out that using coffee grounds and shredded paper are a wonderful help.

Is it true that California is not allowed to collect rain water? If so why? Thanks for sharing such a great idea.
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy 2 года назад
Actually a few years ago they changed the laws on collecting rainwater. You can collect it before it hits the ground. Rain barrels, tanks, cisterns are allowed. Farm ponds or storage on soil are not. The water companies were probably involved in passing the old laws.

I’m hoping to try this but I have mostly coast redwoods. Would the tree fall from these work for composting? Thank you!
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
@RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy 2 года назад
Yes it will. However Coastal Redwood lumber has properties that preserve it from decomposition. It will eventually break down but will take much longer. Smaller pieces of anything break down faster. An added nitrogen source may help to accelerate the process.
