How To Make Perfect Dipped Beeswax Taper Candles (In An Old Tin Can)

Home-made beeswax candles are a real pleasure to make and to use - and they make a perfect gift too. Everyone should have a go making them (especially if you have children and/or bees?). The key to doing it successfully is choosing the right containers in the first place. In this case we’re using an old gallon can that once contained wood-preservative. (Cut the top off with a can-opener.) Whatever you choose, it should be deep and straight-sided, or you’ll have to heat more wax than you need to. The outer container just needs to hold enough water to keep the wax melted.
These are cotton wicks - you can get ones made especially for beeswax (but they all seem to work). Keep the wax just above melting point - any hotter and you’ll only have to cool them more between dips. Or wait longer.
Purists among you will say these need rolling - well we like them with the odd wrinkle. After all, they’re home-made and they should look it. If you want them smoother, just roll them between wet, flat boards while they’re still warm.
And if you want them parallel and not tapered, you’ll need to turn them upside down half way through the process (why would you bother??).
These are available now in our online emporium

Great Video! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you considered - Chireetler Earning Maker Rule (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is an awesome one off product for learning how to make candles for fund or profit minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my BF at very last got great results with it.

I've never used bee's wax for this but it definitely works with paraffin wax. Instead of having your dipping container filled all the way up with wax have half water and half wax. As long as the water stays hot the wax will stay liquid, and the water always goes to the bottom and the wax to the top. The candle will collect wax as it passes through the top layer so hitting the water won't affect the length at all, it will also collect wax as it passes back up through the wax on it's way out of the container. If you keep the hot water topped up you will eventually use all the wax in the container so less wasted wax sticking to the sides as well.

I have a whole lot of beeswax from candles I tried making the melt and pour way which were a disaster because beeswax cools so fast and needs a much thicker wick than I'd used before. Now I know what to do with them! Melt them again and make dipped candles! Thanks so much for your savvy and simple videos that not only inspire but entertain as well!

When I was young, some 50 years ago, we lived near a bee keeper. Dipping candles was the way we earned extra money and there was a flurry of dipping activity in the weeks just prior to Christmas. We too used the nuts for weights and a water pitcher for a cooling bath. Thank you for this video,,, I have not thought of those dipping days in early winter for quite awhile.

I have about 50 boxes of old brood wax frames. I just made your steam melter and now I am a keen follower of yours! I have 8 hives now, down from 40 a few years ago but this winter my plan is to do all things wax related. Melt the combs, make foundation, candles, creams, salves and wood finishes. I like your scale, simplicity and efficiency. Thank you for your lovely video's. Keep up the fine work!

I apologize for the exact question (at the bottom of such a creative video), but I wonder how much time is spent on making such candles ... and of course, I am delighted with what you are doing I live in a big city and I think people forget and sometimes even feel shy about such activities Now you can buy everything. As a rule, what is sold is cheaper and has a more beautiful look. but How valuable that you do!
