How to Make Perfect White Buttercream 

I'm a hairstylist who always uses purple to cut yellow in hair. Why did I not think of this? Brilliant!!

Wow you recall me, long ago when my mom used to whiten the white clothes by adding that blueing liquid in final rinse. And i noticed that blue liquid was quite purple. Good idea.

When I need a really white icing, I replace the butter with shortening. You actually get a firmer buttercream that doesn't melt as easily, and there's less of a problem with having to counter yellowness. I tend to flavor mine with dark extracts, but still get pretty decently white frostings with shortening, using this tip of adding a tiny bit of purple will probably make them even whiter.
