On this episode of The Fab Forums I discuss some simple techniques on how to make pie cut bends. The process to do it right isn't very hard. With a little math you can make accurate and repeatable pie cut bends.
I hope you dig it

I wrap a strip of paper around tubing, fold it in half, and mark where the fold is and where paper ends meet. Perfect halfway marks every single time. I’m not a mathmagician.

After you mark the opposite sides of your tube, you can mark the half diameter tube dimension on the bed of your saw off the back stop. Then you can just line up the mark on the tube on the mark on your saw bed and make the cut. Then roll the tube 180 degrees and cut the other side. That way the saw angle never changes and all you have to do is roll the tube back and forth to make the cuts. If that makes any sense.

Cut a piece of template paper exactly the dia.of your pipe.(make it as something that wraps AROUND your pipe as in a "wrap around)Size doesn't matter!,Fold it in half .the joint will be one side of your pipe and the fold mark will be the exact opposite side. No math required. Fold your paper strip twice evenly and you can mark your pipe in quarters.

90/number of pipes/sections then divide it by 2. Eg: if u want 5 sections. 90/5/2=9deg (angle ur pipe to 9deg for the first cut). Then rotate make the second cut. Ur first cut will be 9deg. Ur 2nd, 3rd and 4th will be 18deg as there are 2 sides) Only the first and the last pipe will be 9deg. (Deemed as 1 pipe) so in total there will be 6 pieces) 4 x 18deg and 2x 9deg Once u add all those pipes it will sum up to 90deg
@stevie9361
@stevie9361 6 лет назад
I just wanted to add that you need to determine how many pieces you want by how close to a smooth radius bend you need and how much welding you want to do. Take off for a short radius 90 is diffrent from long radius. Then you take 90 an divide by how many pieces. Ex90÷6=15degrees. I find 4.5 an 9 degrees works for larger pipe but if your working on smaller pipe or don't really care about smooth air flow you can try 22.5 degrees for your 45s an 90s. Also be careful when cutting because the pipe is going to oval a bit

@goose27162
@goose27162 7 лет назад
Yup, most of the time when you weld any metals you are changing the temper or hardness of the material. In knife making you temper the steel to give it it's strength back. So tempering your bends or cuts after welding is going to regain the strength lost due to heating and welding.

Determine the angle of cut for any fabricated turn by: Angle of turn DIVIDED BY the number of joints (welds) multiplied by 2 Example making a 2 piece 90 degree turn- 90 divided by welds X2 is 90 divided by 2=45 degree cut. for a 3 piece 90 degree turn its>> 90 divided by 4 (4 being the number of joints X2) so,,90 divided by 4= 22.5 degree angle of cut. Will work for square or rectangle tubing ,wood too .
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 7 лет назад
that would work if you wanted 22.5 degree cuts on your pies but no one wants that.
@bananapudding3051
@bananapudding3051 7 лет назад
The Fab Forums whats he is saying is its a simple way to figure up degrees for how many pie cuts you desire 90 divided by 10 = 9 so 9° miter cuts so what if some one didnt want to use 9° or 18° miters then this is just an easy way to fig it out all he was saying so a 15 piece 90 would be 6° miter cut
@callmenortnortin467
@callmenortnortin467 7 лет назад
That will work for any number of degrees of turn (22 1/2, 45, 90 etc.) YOU decide the amount of turn AND the number of "pie slices"youwant. it's still the same formula >> Angle of turn, divided by (number of welds as in"joints multiplied by 2) It's a basic pipefitters manual formula.One size fits all LOL. I hope my explanation isn't confusing. Thanks for your informative videos .

hey, you can buy 3"x 10 feet aluminum electrical pipe for $25-35. Take it to a local muffler shop and have it bend the way you need it. It's a cheap way to cold pipes for turbo set up. You can get sizes up to 2"-4" straight pipes in 10 feet lengths and you can get 90° and 45° degree elbows that cost the same as straight 10 feet pipe.

There are some more math sums tat you can do which will allow you to calculate how to position the tube in the saw, so that every cut is identical in length.That will keep the smaller side of the pie the same on every cut - Or you could use it to make the first cut then build a stop to the saw

A couple of methods I have used to mark centre lines on pipes and tube may help someone. 1. tools found in a combination square set make this job easy & accurate. Circle centre finder will give exactly 180 degree marks across the pipe. Then use the square to draw the lines. This requires a perfect cut to begin with though. 2. Say you have a 4" diameter pipe, on a flat surface pack under a sharpie so the tip is at 2". Steady hand, drag and draw :) Great vid by the way!

The smaller ones are easier to fine tune. Otherwise, you'll have to sit there and grind an 18 degree piece to fit. Mathematically, we have a thing called shift. Lateral shift makes the pipe look smaller. At 4 degrees, you have a 5% vertical shift, with a 99.9% un-changed lateral. 9 degrees is a 13.5% vertical shift, with a 98.6% horizontal accuracy still. 18 degrees comes in at 30% vertical shift, 5% horizontal. Percentages matter when you do flow calculations. You'll find results on a dyno if you run a 26 degree pie cut with its 10% longitudinal interference. 18's are hard to find even in a laboratory. 9 and 4 are so fine, you can add them and get away with it, penalty free.

Theres a much easier way to do this... you clamp a piece of square tube that has the same ID as the OD of the pipe on the end of your pipe. Shim pipe up thickness of material of the square tube in the jaws, Set saw to 4.5, 7, etc etc, set your stop, make cut, rotate pipe 180 degrees to the opposite face of the square tube, rinse and repeat.

Yeah but you want to figure out half of the circumference not half of the diameter.

This is the first video using titanium as a header material, how many people can afford this??? How about mild steel pre pie cut source instead?? I get you can do complex bends this way that a mandrel bender cant do.

I'LL PAY THE MONEY TO HAVE THE BENDS DONE AT A MUFFLER SHOP
@Thefabforums
@Thefabforums 5 лет назад
Lol...they aren't as good from the muffler shop, that's why people do pie cuts to begin with. Pie cuts maintain a consistant diameter throughout the bend unlike any bender including those done over mandrel, plus complex bends can be created using pie cuts that could never be done with a bender.
