In this video, Mike from The Geek Pub shows you how to make your own plantation shutters for about 1/3rd the cost of your local home improvement center. Mike demonstrates the use of Rockler's Shutter System jigs (Rockler did not sponsor this video).
This video includes step by step instructions on the construction of Plantation Shutters, including cuts, assembly, joinery, painting, and installation. So follow along and you'll learn how to build your very own plantation shutters!

Right... what project can we do that will promote the most use of different kinds of tools for sale? He says, that’s cheaper... after you buy thousands in saws, drills and tools. Cheaper if you already have these tools & you would only have them if you did woodwork.
@mattgrosse9036
@mattgrosse9036 2 года назад
In defense he did say that the planer and router parts are not necessary but he likes to use them to give them a custom edge. So if you have the tools then use them if not there really isn’t a strong reason why you need to go buy them

I live in a 3 bedroom condo with a two car garage. For the first couple of years, before I took over the entire garage as my workshop, my woodworking "workshop" literally consisted of a metal shelving rack from CostCo that measures 48"x20"x72" and all of my tools which included track saw (you don't need a table saw), miter saw, benchtop router table, benchtop drill press, and a whole bunch of other stuff packed on to that metal shelving rack. I started with, and still use, a couple of Black & Decker Workmate 425 portable work benches. I started with cheap Craftsman tools, and slowly upgraded to Festool, and I chose Festool because their tools are designed for the mobile craftsman, e.g. people that need to haul an entire workshop to the client site, and also because of their superior dust control. When I was ready to work, I'd move the family car out of garage, drop some plastic painters sheets over the washer/dryer and other items in the garage, and get to woodworking. You don't need a big workshop to do some decent woodworking. My Father used to work in a small shed that you could touch all walls by stretching out your arms and turning in place. He did have a small, home built tablesaw, but only because track saws didn't exist back then.

Good stuff. Nice work on the shutters and video. Very professional. I ran into the same width limitation and appeal to Rockler to open up the design wizard for me. Hope they do it soon cas I don't want to build a spreadsheet with the same functionality in it... Seriously very good video! You make it look easy and for the novice, in the comments below, it is not. The jigs and advice you have given are spot on. I have over 50 of these to build for some high end rentals and I do them when I have time saving thousands and increasing the equity of the properties at the same time. Thx for the quality video!

Do you think I can build the Stiles and Rails from pine, and the rest (control arm, louvers) from basswood. Once it is stained, shouldn't be able to tell a difference, right? Any other issues?
@WorksforMe

I meant painted, not stained, sorry.
@TheGeekPub

Pine has two major drawbacks compared to basswood. Weight and Warping.
@WorksforMe
@WorksforMe 7 лет назад
Thanks. I have a Jointer and Planer so I was thinking of using Pine for the stiles and rails. I built an exterior barn door from Pine and hasn't warped after staining. The weight may not be an issue as the louvers are basswood and should be light. Plus pine saves me $$ on my first build (plan to build ~30 more if it looks good). I am using pocket holes to join the rails and stiles so I can always rework it. Those are just my thoughts.
