HOW TO MAKE REAL CARBON KATANA FROM CYBERPUNK 2077 THERMAL KATANA DIY

For more than a year I had been hatching the idea of making a katana out of carbon, and it finally happened! I made the carbon plates myself using vacuum infusion technology, the first time it turned out very well. The handle was cut on a CNC machine from an AD31 aluminum bus. Well, then fit, check, paint and assemble, and of course the test at the end)

I wouldve suggested having made the edge itself out of a metal, especially since youre gonna paint it in the end, then it would be a bit more reliable and good at cutting but thats my OP

Yeah... carbon fiber does not hold a good edge for long, steel is still the best blade material

The guy is making a show item, not a sword for you to take out and do battle or yard work. It's going to sit on his wall and look pretty, so there would be no reason to forge a steel sword; give credit where credit is due, but thats my OP...

Me too, carbon fiber for blades could be estetically nice but it is useless, that material is used for traction resistance parts, moreover he just layered casually the katana, without any thought about the direction of the force could be during a hit. That katana and that knife are not Sharp at all... He also painted them... It has been a waste of time and money... He also bought a compressor... too serious for a toy.

A lot of the stuff can be acquired from a hardware store, the set up and preparations are where the real problems are, plus the fact that things can go very wrong if not careful and wearing proper protection... You could probably make a blade that holds it's edge better by buying a carbon steel bar and grinding it into your preferred shape; Joerg Sprave made a sword this way and it was pretty decent...

While the craftsmanship is exquisite and the final piece looks stunning, I agree with most commentors that a metal component should be added to the blade itself for it to be called "real katana" instead of "prop katana", as it doesn't have the cutting power nor I believe it is sturdy enough to withstand hitting some objects without shattering. An amazing piece as a form of decoration/trophy, extremly elegant and beautiful, but not a real weapon.

It is, and that is why there aren't any carbon knives except this one. Carbon-steel is what you want in a blade because the exterior needs to be stiff and the core needs a little softness to absorb impacts.

This looks amazing... but it would be neat to see if CF could enhance a katana in the same way the iron/steel hybrid was used originally. Iron was strong flexible, while the steel was sharp and brittle. Using a steel blade with an iron support was the secret to making them apparently. I don’t know how CF works as far as its material properties but it seems like because of its strength and lightness, it could replace the iron, and make the katana much lighter... but a steel (or some other strong but sharp metal) could be used in place - like tungsten carbide?? 🤷‍♂️ if the layers could be fused appropriately somehow it’d be neat to see. I’ve never swung a katana around but I had a bokken when I was younger and I can imagine a katana is probably a bit heavier. If that was super light and super sharp/durable... it’d be even scarier 🤣 and katana are already fairly scary big a** blades to me anyways. I’ll stick with my chefs knifes
