I think what I love about this DIY speaker is not only its simplicity but it doesn’t look like a normal speaker. If someone saw this and heard it at the same time the look on their face would be priceless!

After watching it through, I went back to check out one bit towards the beginning and realized that I had watched most of it all over again.. I commend you for the pacing, which is great for someone with both basic knowlage of this stuff, as well as those far on the ADHD spectrum. Also, the music isn't that overused stock shit that I find on so many commentary-free builds. Cheers

The reverse tape trick for the coil is a lifehack! Too simple to think of it, but saves hours of work and frustration.

This gave me so many new ideas, like tubes balanced or standing on springs to allow multi-directional movement.

reminds me of my ESS Californian speakers. They were electro static. But you needed 14" woofers all at 400 watts to shake the windows. That was back in the 1977. Now I rock the house with 1000 watt home theater. Good for now as @ 66 need my hearing

This is awesome! I once played my guitar through a commercial system like this and it sounded really good. I was surprised.

Sounds surprisingly good for what it is. It's not a full range though. Basically a mid with a bit of treble. Bass is out of phase and will cancel out.

This would be really fun to sample different audio signals from and then use the samples in a song or experimental audio project.

This makes a nice effect/affect on the audio. I think is would be cool for drums/percs, and vox.

Super bueno! I have some diffusers from an cracked lcd screen I replaced on my son's laptop. Imma throw some light strip LEDs modulated by the audio. Best.Video.Ever.

I like this as a novelty, and I respect the patience in winding the voice coil by hand. There is no way I would have that kind of patience. In all, this is pretty neat

I was really tired and busy when I watched this but I did watch it all the way through. It was something to absorb! And I wanted to come back and thank you for documenting this. I'm thinking about it and it's one of the few homemade projects that actually builds the driver instead of assembling drivers into a system. Reducing the crossover to a two-way active really has some advantages. I'm already thinking about refinement and scaling up. This might be one I eventually build. Thank you!

Some nice out of the box thinking dude. Kinda reminds me of a similar iteration I've seen on the interwebs. Hardly full range, but could be easily scaled up....

This got me thinking on ways to make a bass speaker to go with this and what I came up with is to find a couple large loops or rather hoops, put something like a bed sheet over one and paint it, put a weight in the center (ballbearing, lg marble?) to make a parabolic, repeat with the other, dry and scew a short iron rod the tip of the cone, repeat with other. Role a coil of speaker wire and put over one rod, use a non conductive glue to glue the two rods ends together, mount the coil (not touching rods) and wood spacers to hold the two hoops in place. Not in that order though. Don't know if I have that quit right, but something like that. Maybe don't paint like a 1/2" near hoop so can flex better, maybe a small rubberband between rod or a plastic rod on one cone? The paint could be like wood glue or polyurathane (stiff) or flex seal or silicon?

Круто, я в детстве лет в 5-6 включал в радиорозетку, Всё что можно, от электро бритвы до утюга, и слушал ре трансляции, правда с утюгом это было сложно назвать прослушиванием) звук хоть и был, но на самой границе слуха. И даже делал какое- то подобие динамика. Просто брал кольцевой магнит от динамика, мотал несколько витков провода витков 20-30, и примагничевал к простой консервной банке, звук был, правда только у меня, а на всей улице радио точка молчала))

I really LIKE THIS BUILD!!! WATCHED THE BUILD ONCE AND STARTED ORDERING BAR SUPERMAGNETS. THEN STARTED LOOKING FOR SOURCES OF HARDWOODS AND SHEET PLASTIC... After another 3 views I find Ineed to know magnetic polarity across coil gap. I have been restlessly waiting for your promised 2nd edition so I don't have to use the best calculated educated guess method and possibly have to refinish a hardwood post if wrong... Keep up the good work!!! .

Cool Build!!! When RadioShack was in business, they had a mid-tweeter called "Linaeum" that had 360° sound dispersion. Although I never disassembled one, I suspect this is how it was constructed!!!😁👍🏻

Fabulous. A small speaker and a physics lesson all in one. Obviously as this size it will sound 'tinny' but at scale could be excellent for immediacy over a good range without immediate need for crossovers or damping as fall-away will be from the sound source -- well at least in theory. Years ago I knew Peter Walker OBE, the inventor of the great ELS 57 electrostatic and he would have loved this. Thank you so very much.

You could play around with a thin pice of wood, steam it an make it curved behind the speaker may be kind of fun to play with sound response and directional reflections.

I now have my 1-1/2 dowel rod sliced in half down the middle. I cut a 1/4 inch wide by 1/8 inch deep groove down the middle of both halves of the above mentioned dowel rod and after almost a week, I have 40 small button sized rare earth magnets glued in each half. Which was a serious pain in the ass! Using gorilla glue and a clamp for each magnet. I am using round, soft, clear plastic tubes for mine. Taking my sweet time to make it look beautiful. Cannot wait for this project to be finished!!

pretty cool. reminds me a lot of the old linaeum dipole tweeters you could find on some optimus models

One of the coolest things on RU-vid. I wonder if the sound would improve if you lightly stuffed some poly fill inside the “hollow” parts of the speaker. That way you might be able to cancel out some of the sound coming from the inside of those hollow tubes? But I’m sure it would greatly reduce its efficiency and frequency reproduction

Wonder if big floorspeakers would work like this?....you inspire me in a good way :)

Hace muchos años ví y oí un sistema de sonido Carver en una tienda de electrónica . Los parlantes eran unas columnas de 1. 6 mtrs de altura , 60 cms de ancho y 8 cms de espesor . Era un sistema abierto - hacia adelante y hacia atrás - de paneles o laminas delgadas que emitían el sonido . Era espectacular . Adelantado para sus tiempos . No próspero ; tal vez por no ser considerado acústicamente muy bueno , o por ser muy caro . No investigue al respecto . Se me vino a la memoria al ver este proyecto individual . This are linear coils .This is how magneplanar speakers are made ...They have several rows of magnets like those u used .But not required to have a magnet sandwich . Have you tried with just one side magnets .. ? and a better tensioning system for the diaphragm

Well, that was strangely interesting.. I actually enjoyed watching you build that. I was not sure of the direction you were going, until you opened the plastic film layers up, and I was like "AHHHhhhhhh, I see what he is doing"... Clever setup... By chance, have you run a frequency range on that unit, to see its strengths and weaknesses are, or what bandwidth it can cover? I am curious to know. I realize, what we hear through YT videos, vs what is heard in person are two totally different things, but, from what I hear, it does have a bit of a "tingy" sound to it, which on its own is a horrible sound, but once backed with mid range and a sub woofer, and possibly a tweeter, I bet it will cover allot of the harder midrange that cone speakers fail to keep up with with out cooking themselves off... Well done... Also, How does it do with MALE voice/vocals, and likewise, females voice/vocals... ?

Great design idea, I may make one myself. It would be nice to see the manufacturing done to a higher standard. There's too much glue everywhere. Stained varnished wood and brass fittings would look great.

Hi, did I see that you have used different cleaning and gluing products? what are they? another question is: how much diameter is the copper wire for the winding? from the caliber on video is not clear.

Very old design speaker. Radio shack realistic pro Lx5 Tweeter remake. Be sure to look them up!! Good job though on the remake brother! 👍🏿💯 They sound pretty good also. I would like to see these made on a larger scale.

Neodymium magnets with a stronger magnetic field and thicker wire and thicker plastic with possibly a 80 Hertz or lower crossover

I hate to deflate your balloon, but these speakers while good over the mid to upper range do poorly in the low range. If you want really good performance you are much better off doing an active speaker system with active crossover. If you want performance from ~400Hz down to 20Hz you need the stiff large surface area of a cone or carbon honeycomb speaker. Even better than these magnetic driven ribbon speakers are capacitive speakers, although the circuit that drives them is different.

IMHO this configuration isn’t very efficient since you’ve an opposition between the two parts of the voice coil. The static field is only in one horizontal direction in your magnetic arrangement, then the ascending current and the descending current in the voice coil acted in opposite ways all the time whatever the sign of the audio signal…
