One thing commonly forgotten about while doing a left UN-protected turn is that, we pay attention to find a safegap from oncoming traffic but we forget that there maybe pedestrians on the crosswalk of the road that we're turning into. In an unprotected left turn, we need to check for safe gap from BOTH oncoming traffic AND pedestrians who may be using that crosswalk. A reminder for myself first and a reminder for all. Drive safe.
@@Quad373 i would turn on the hazards and pray that no asshole starts driving into the intersection just because they got their green light. Meanwhile, i would wait for the slow-ass pedestrian to at complete the crossing. Would i honk? Maybe i should not. But i might.
@@Quad373 You wait until the pedestrian finally and then you make the turn. The folks with the green light have the responsibility to wait for the intersection to clear.
Im taking my test soon 🙂 busy intersections are my biggest fear. This is EXACTLY WHAT I BEEN SEARCHING FOR very informative, very clear! THA K YOU VERY MUCH !!!!
This is what shocked when I first came to this country left turns are very different and dangerous from my country in dubai. Over there we dont have to worry about pedestrian or oncoming traffic because they have a red light. I feel its safer in dubai than here
My first car accident happened when a woman turned at those “left turn yield on green light” intersections right when I was already passing straight on a green light. Her parents accused me of speeding but I was clearly following the speed limit. Good thing the cops knew better and gave her the ticket.
8:49 I needed this advice.A car behind honked like a crazy man at 4 seconds gap yesterday. I almost got traumatized by that. This video gives courage to me.
I have a lot of anxiety around driving and recently got a job that takes me into town (I'm used to more rural back roads) theres two very busy intersections I have to make lefts in and they make me so nervous. Thank you for this video "If you don't feel safe about it then it's not safe" made me feel a lot better about how I drive. Recently I've had a lot of people tailgating and honking at me because I'm a cautious driver and it really spooks me
I'm going to start driving for my new job and there's this one left turn on my way home to practice. I felt that anxious pressure of rushing my turn but I'm not that experienced yet to be an aggressive driver.
I'm really nervous about taking my test. I had to give up driving over 30 years ago because of a seizure disorder and am finally seizure free now and have my permit, but it's been a long time since i've driven. I pray i will pass. I've waited over 30 yrs. to drive again! These videos are sure helpful for me. Thank you!
You're story at the beginning is exactly what happened to me recently. Thank you for this video and saying what happened to you. I'm not a reckless driver or a speed demon, I just got confused and made a mistake. I should have just paused and waited. If you don't know, don't go. I am fortunate that nobody was hurt and I learned how to be more aware and safe when driving.
Very glad to hear that no one, including you, was hurt! Close calls can get the heart racing, but can also be good lessons to help us become better and safer drivers. I’m afraid I’ve learned too many things that way, but they were lessons that stuck with me.
This is the best advise if you don't know don't go. I am sure some other good drivers will understand your confusion and signal you when to go. Actually it happened with me few times. So talking from my experience.😀
I am from India , recently shifted to US . This is the most informative video on taking Left turns . Cleared all the doubts . Thanks you for saving so many new drivers
you know the point you made about keeping your wheels straight before making a left turn, is something im pretty sure i already do but never think of. thats great advice, thank you
Very glad to hear it helped, and I complement you on taking the time before you get here to do some study on the differences in driving in the US. I've only driven in one other country, and I learned very quickly that I can't take for granted that everything will be the same there as what I'm used to at home. Sounds to me like you'll have no trouble driving in the US...enjoy your trip and thanks for watching!
I already have my license and is out of practice for a year. Was in a car accident a year ago with my mom driving that gave me ptsd even though the accident wasn't too bad and we only had light injuries that healed after a couple of months x3 The other driver pulled out without checking for traffic and did an unprotected left turn onto the main road while my mom was going 45, the speed limit, and we slammed straight into them. Since then I've been super scared of driving XD I barely drive around my own block and barely to the gas station now. I've been driving more lately as I came out of the ptsd shell but I still feel very scared of making turns so I decided to watch your video! Thanks for the video, it was very informative and helped me gain a bit of confidence. Especially the part with the gap! If i don't feel safe making a turn then I should just keep waiting without letting the cars behind me worry me too much
This is the best left-hand turn teaching video I’ve ever watched. You really solved my puzzle about yellow lights in the intersection when I have to turn left. Thank you sooooooo much!
I faced the 'Left Turn Yield On Green' situation today as I proceeded to the middle of the lane and quickly realized that I could potentially block the oncoming traffic. So I backed up a bit. This video helped me understand what I need to do to avoid such situation in future again. Thank you so much!!!
I nearly got into a wreck headed home today and almost got hit on the right side where my back door is. I was in the left-lane yielding for on-coming traffic and I didn't wait long enough for the cars passing and as I was making my left turn some dude comes out of nowhere and almost hits me on the side as I was turning. I've had my license for almost 2 weeks now and it was only my 4th or 5th time driving alone and I'm just thankful that the guy on the side of me slowed down and didn't hit me. I've only had my car for 4 days and I'm just glad that I learned from my mistake and was able to avoid disaster.
I’m really glad nothing bad happened to you! And that was a great learning experience for you since it didn’t end in a wreck. I’ve learned a lot over the years from “almost accidents”…those are lessons that stick with you. Take care!
just got my drivers permit like 3 days ago waitin on my dad to teach me how to drive hes takin his grandfather time n i wanna learn drivings my passion but i wont drive him up a wall about it anyway driving in general seems pretty easy i may be wrong but you gotta pay attention to other drivers watch every one of em like a hawk and scan the area around you this video helped me so much thank you sossososoossossoo much sir!
Congrats on getting your permit… big step. And you’re so right about having to pay close attention to other drivers and watch em like a hawk! That’s a huge key to avoiding accidents and being a safe driver. Best of luck to you, and I bet you’re going to be a great and safe driver!
This video cleared all my doubt about unprotected left turns, specifically what to do when the signal becomes red and you are halfway into the intersection :) thank you very much for the clear explanation of the rules
Amazing video :) im currently in the process to get my permit but i could never understand what “yield on green” meant, although it seems so clear i couldnt wrap my head around it. ive never been much of a visual learner so getting to hear someone explain it really helped me! thank you so much for what you do to help those starting out!
Thanks for this! I’ve been doing lessons all week and have my last lesson tomorrow, followed by my test shortly after. Left turns at green lights make me so anxious! Same with hill parking. Knowing when to start turning the wheel left is what I struggle with.
Thank you so much! I love when you highlight parts of the road, like the lanes and lane markings, it really helps me understand and see what youre talking about. And putting the camera outside your car is so helpful! Actually seeing what it looks like to make the turn, real traffic lights, and real cars is so helpful. Thank you!
i would like to put that sticker too.. but the doubt and fear is also there knowing there are bad drivers who wont be considerate and might use that against you even if its their fault... i pray everytime i start to drive i wont encounter such...specially on freeways.. my God, guide and protect us new drivers..
@gcfactorof7 Praying before you drive is probably something we should all do. Pray for ourselves to be patient and understanding, and pray to get the same back from other drivers. Take care and drive safe.
Thank you sir, in the heat of the moment with stressed parents they can’t convey this same sort of message. You just made me 100% more confident when it comes to green arrows vs green light
This instruction video is really good and covered a couple of mistakes I see almost every driver make. One is keeping tires pointed straight ahead while waiting . The second is pulling our straight and making a semi-circle. Too many people make a straight line when turning left. This actually puts the vehicle on the wrong side of the road and forces the driver to make a correction to avoid hitting the center divider, putting their car in the adjacent lane. Annoying and dangerous. You explained how to make the turn with simple instruction. Awesome job.
Recently relocated to USA. I would say this is the best video on left turn. You have done a great job. Thanks for helping so many people out there. May Almighty Allah reward you.
I almost got in a wreck twice today for this because I'm used to the green arrows when I'm turning left. I watched this to make it stick more that I HAVE to yield whenever it's a solid green light and I'm turning left. I don't wanna get in a wreck. So thank you for this Edit: I just got my license on Friday after failing my first test
@HowSkills thank you. My mom and I talked about it, and she and Dad both say that after today, I won't make the same mistake because they know how I am. I just want to take extra precautions even though it traumatized me, and I probably will remember to yield before turning left at all really
thanks for making your video so detailed and thorough. i'm a newer driver, having just got my license a year ago and my first car only two weeks ago, but a few days ago i was in an accident because i made a left turn and failed to gauged the speed of an oncoming car. thankfully we were both fine, but it was a really frightening experience that traumatized me quite a bit. i'm incredibly nervous around left hand turns now, but your video has helped me feel like i understand them a bit better, so thank you so much.
Hi Stan, I am watching your video over an over for my G2 road test purposes. I passed today with one major error actually but because my Examiner was super duper nice guy, he said I let it go now and he told me my other minor errors as well especially for right and left turn he said am too slow and break to much, so I thought dam I failed again for my 3 rd times 🤦🏻♀️, he asked me go to the centre to get marked sheets, I still didn’t realize that I actually passed, told the lady in the counter that I need to get my marked sheet because am failed, she looks at me like what do you said ? You are passed she said 😳. I feel like stupid that time. Anyway am super happy after 3 attempts I can passed with the Examiner help of course, I will never forget that moment and really grateful for that super duper examiner. 👍
Congratulations to you and a pat on the back to your examiner too! Sounds like he was very fair and helpful, and I’m glad you had someone like that. Made for a nice surprise at the end!
This is a good video on making left turns, I get nervous sometimes when making unprotected left turns on green light, especially when there's a lot of traffic, just 3 years ago I was in an accident making a left turn on green light, I was waiting at the intersection and the light turned green, at first I thought it was safe to go so I went, there was a median in the middle of the intersection, it was that kind of intersection, while I was making the turn I ended up hitting a car that was going in the opposite direction, at first I didn't see the car, it happened so fast, by that time it was too late, of course I was at fault and I got a traffic violation, lesson learned I guess, so now I try to be careful when making a left turn especially at a green light instead of a green arrow, watching your video helps.
I'll be traveling to the US pretty soon on a business trip, and this is definitely great information for foreigners! Thank you so much for doing this great video!
Glad to hear that you passed your driving test, and I hope that you are becoming less nervous of driving alone. Thanks a lot for watching, and I apologize for taking so long to reply!
I am a new driver who is 20 years old and I have been driving on the road for almost 2 mouths and this video helped so much driving gives me Aton of stress and anxiety and this helped a lot with my stress thank you
You’re welcome, and I’m glad to hear the video helped you. That’s why I make them, hoping somebody benefits from them somehow. Driving can be very stressful at first, but the more you learn about it, and the more you drive, the easier it will get. I bet you’re going to be a great driver!
Thanks for the video. Here in Canada, GTA to be specific, left turns get a little tense. The person behind starts to honk pressurizing you to make the left turn, there is a never ending barrage of on coming traffic which deprives you of a safe distance to make the turn, and when you do find a window pedestrians continue use the crossing, all of which leaves you stuck in the island. Every now and then, you'll find a driver stuck in the island ending up blocking the cross traffic.
I hear you...left turns can be a very difficult thing to do, especially in situations like you described. Takes a lot of patience sometimes to wait for the right moment to make your turn while trying to ignore impatient drivers around you. Just never go until you feel it's safe, and not when the person behind you thinks you should go.
Omg, this is just what I was looking for. I failed by G2 test in Ontario, Canada, due to not yielding to a pedestrian on right turn at intersection. I really wanted refresher on left turn rules, before taking my next test. Thank you!
Already been driving a bit with my permit, but still learned some great stuff. I thought this video would be good to share with others I know who haven't started driving, but this turned out to be great for me as well. this video reinforced some great stuff, and taught me some new stuff too :) thank you very much for such a well put-together video
Omg your video is great. I'm coming over from Ireland for a holiday in 5weeks and have rented a car for 4days at the start. I was looking some information regarding light systems and anything extra. Your video is amazing and has definitely made me understand alot more. Thank you
I've been driving for more of my life than I haven't at this point, but this video was excellent. I wish I had had you (and youtube) as a resource when I started. Great work and thanks!
Thank you so much for this. I always get nervous at left turns bc I don't have good judgment yet. Scared the heck out of my driving instructor today lol. But hey that's why I'm here. I want to be as safe as possible!
I usually never give thanks on a youtube video but seriously! thanks a TON cuz this video came up right when I needed it! I just saw a video of a person failing their driver’s test because they didn’t yield to the other driver across from them when the sign said to yield on green. Just thinking about the fact that a scenario like that could also happen to me when I’m taking my driver’s test, is mostly the number one thing that I fear the most. I was thinking of searching up videos on how to deal with that, but ironically, my recommended page did it for me so now I’m here 😂
Thank you very much for taking the time to leave a comment and watch the video! I really appreciate that, and I don't know how many times RU-vid has served up just the right video for me too when I needed it.
This such a good video! I am pretty decent at driving, but not only have I not done it much for many months, but now for the first time, I am driving completely on my own. So even though I know I am not bad at it, this was such a good reminder to calm my anxiety and refresh my brain, Thanks!
Thank you so so so much! You explained everything crystal clear! I never understood how making a left turn on an intersection worked, I'd just follow my dad's orders. There was a time I entered the intersection and didn't know who to look out for so I tried making a left although there was a car going straight ahead already. Dad yelled to brake so I did and that scared me away from driving for a while. Problem is, he never really explained what my error was. But damn, this video is gonna push me directly to a driving test already! The intersection was the only thing holding me back. (And going reverse then parking, but whatever) Again, thank you!!
When pedestrians are crossing your primary concern is to ensure they get all the way across before you attempt your turn even if the light is green. If you miss the light you simply wait for the next one to turn. Ideally lights should let the left turners go first before the walk sign comes on.
They do where I live. Sometimes people will enter the crosswalk anyway, which pisses me off, but pedestrians are not supposed to cross the path of a protected left turn here.
Thankyou for this video I have had my license for about 4 months and could not figure out left hand turns on intersections because some are guaranteed sade and some you have to yield but now I know and don't have to avoid them thankyou
This is the best video telling the difference between green arrow and green circle light, can you make a video on turning right and going straight with cars turning towards their right.
Right turn signals (which are usually rare) would likely be like a left turn one, except that for right turn you are even allowed to make the turn on red signal not just yield signal.
Hey, thanks a ton Stan. Great informative video. Shall soon be visiting the states as a tourist. I am an Indian familiar with driving right-hand drive cars. Your video helps familiarize me with left-hand drive cars to a large extent. Thank you so much
Thanks so much I am in Denmark, I study theory every time and it was very hard to understand well about left turn. But this yours is very informitive! Thanks so much
I am 29 just recently began driving, though I have had a license for 8 years (lot of hurdles in my life that were very difficult to overcome, I worked hard to be able to even get my license.) So I know the laws for the most part, but no one has ever taught me how to drive. I am trying to do everything I can to learn to be a better driver. I hate turning into traffic, and parking. I know how to park, but just in case I will park farther away, not in between vehicles, just in case I am the worst driver in the world. I'm confident, but caution is better than confidence with a 2 ton bullet. Everything I do feels like it is dictated by other, very rude, drivers. When they come behind me, I have to turn asap, even when I'm not comfortable, neither is it the safest. I almost caused an accident, as I almost hit another car turning into the lane next to the one I was leaving, in order to turn into their original lane. That was embarrassing and extremely dangerous. I pray that I get patient drivers who don't want to rush me into oncoming traffic. I'm trying to be better here, and I am grateful for these videos!
Sounds like you’ve worked hard and gone through a lot to get your license! I understand what you’re saying, and I wish there were more patient drivers out there. It seems like a lot of people are rushing to get where they’re going and drive very aggressively and selfishly, which makes it more dangerous for everyone. You do have to drive defensively because of this, and always watch out for the other driver. If they put you in an unsafe situation, do all you can to avoid an accident, which it sounds like is what you try to do. The more you drive and learn about driving, the better you’ll be able to handle different situations safely. It’s a good sign to me that you’re watching videos to become a better driver, and I think you’re on your way to becoming a great one! Thanks for watching, and take care.
A similar experience happened to me this morning. I am a very new, but cautious driver. I was making a left turn and misjudged the distance of the car approaching and almost had a head on collision with the cop car. Luckily, no one was hurt.i didn't get a ticket or anything but the cop pulled me over and was so mad. I felt so bad. Thanks for this video. ❤
Thank you so much for your video, you can not find this information in the book, Im a beginner and now I have a clear picture of all the combinations of left turns and possible situations. Thank you for your work!
Thanks for doing this video! It’s better than the guideline from Illinois. Can you do a video with a lot of details related to driving near a school bus! Thanks
Glad to hear it helped you. Intersections can be anxiety-inducing, but practice and knowing what to do in certain situations can make them a lot easier to deal with. You got this!
AS A PROFESSIONAL POLICE DRIVING INSTRUCTORS, EXCELLENT VIDEO. ONLY THING I WOULD ADD IS SHOULDER CEHCKING LEFT FOR PEDESTRIANS OR CYCLISTS AFTER STOPPING IN THE INTERSECTION WAITING FOR A BREAK IN ONCOMIN TRAFFIC. NOT ALL INTERESECTIONS ARE WIDE 4-6 LANE CROSS STREEETS SOME ARE ONLY 2 LANES, SO SHOULDER CHELC LEFT IS MORE CRITICAL. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO WATCHING MORE OF YOUR VIDEOS. GREAT EDITING AS WELL. WILL USE THESE IN MY CLass
This is the best and most detailed video I’ve seen about this, thank you sooo much for this, I failed my driving test because I didn’t switch to the right lane after completing my turn! how I wish I have seen this video before! 😅
This is good, thank you so much for the comphrehensive guide on left turns. I just failed my road test for a dangerous left turn and this will help me next time
Good video and straight to the point. Just a comment on 😮yielding to pedestrians not on pedestrian or bicycle crossing. It can be more dangerous to give a cyclist an impression that they can cross the road where there are not cycle or pedestrian cross (of course I am not saying to hit a pedestrian because they are crossing at the wrong place). An example is in this video. They cycle went before you but if the car in the oncoming lane was fast, the cyclist could have been hit. Another comment I like the mention to not allow other cars behind force you to rush a left turn. One other big reason apart from your own saftey is the awareness of what may be happening in the lane you're turning to. A pedestrian or something might appear suddenly. If you make those rushed turn you'll have short time and attention to react unlike when the turn is not rushed.
Thanks for the great comments and observations! Very good points, and I especially don’t like it when one driver tries to make another driver rush their turn. Pressuring someone to turn before they feel comfortable turning can cause an accident.
Very professional video! Just wanted to add that in most european countries the traffic lights are placed only on the near side of the intersection, which means that you aren't able to see the light changing to yellow/amber after you enter the intersection, while waiting for oncoming traffic. Having the lights on the far side would definitely make things easier imo
Thank you soooo much sir, I’m having trouble on intersection to turn left and also the rules of traffic light, thank you sooooo much, soon taking my road test!
This summed it up perfectly. I was afraid of me doing the same thing that caused your accident. Thank you so much for this video. I’ll make sure to send it to my friends and family that are beginning to drive shortly.
Thank you so much for this as it helps a lot. Yesterday, i was turning left at intersection and light is green and forgot to yield and stop in the middle to wait for the coming cars going straight but there was lots of cars coming until light turned yellow..I freaked out my husband was yelling at me gooooooooo, like where am i supposed to go cars kept coming, so he said why didn't you yield at the line if your not sure then...omg that was so traumatizing
Sorry that happened to you! Those kind of experiences are hard to go through, but they do leave an impression. That probably won’t happen to you again!
