Need to boost your microphone output?
This circuit only requires 5 parts!
It's very easy and fast to make! Could work well with Arduino sound projects or level detectors. First part of the video is actually building the circuit, the next part is me explaining the circuit in more detail
Parts Needed:
1x LM386
2x .01uF Capacitor
1x 3.5k Resistor
1x Microphone

Hi. At 8:47 the 3K resistor on your schematic should be connected to the positive terminal of the power supply and not to ground.
@blissed4700
@blissed4700 Год назад
Isn't ground infinite resistance? I see the point of the comments above about a resistor not going to ground because of this. So is it a good rule of thumb to always put your resistors in between positive and another component? I'm just learning, burned out a few resistors that were connected to ground in parallel with a capacitor for a guitar effects pedal.

Great video overall. I'd like to make a suggestion: Either have a script ready for your video, or speak quicker with more confidence. The continuous "uuuuumm"s, the "or smthng"s, and the long pauses, are very off-throwing for a beginner like me.

I've built several LM386 amps and all circuits that I have seen specify a 10uF cap between pins 1 and 8...+ on pin 1 and the gain is then 200. A 1k2 resistor in series with this cap reduces the gain to 50. A 10K pot after the input cap with it's wiper going to pin 3 works well.

Interesting. I will remember to look for this, as I examine LM386 Variations. I'm not focused there just yet. I am just finishing up getting familiar with the NE 555 timer. I noticed these similarities you described in the 555 circuits I examined and built, regardless of the application, I built the LED police flasher, as well a transistor checker tester, and the 555 generally gets set up with same jumpers 2 to 6, 4 to 8, 10uf cap between 1 and 2, and ect. I have found that after completing the builds, changing the caps often improves the result, if not required to even to get it to function. Voltages are not always Identical, as well transistors might be diff ID#. You say "specify" are you set on this standard, and, or have you experimented with diff values? If yes I would be interested in your experience. If not some little tricks, at least it may save some wasted time. Thanks.

Thanks for helping. I am needing the mic to pick up a sound from a few feet for a VU meter Led made strip with my Nodemcu. Do I only add the 10uF between pin 1 and 8 and no resistor in series. Also the pots have 3 pins I think the wiper is the middle pin and the other to be connected, but where does the 3rd one go. I assume to the ground. and is the input cap connected to lm386 pin 3? Thanks for any additional help.

Hey bro, some folks should be a little more constructive with there criticism. I bitch about videos sometimes so here are my thoughts. 10 plus man. I am only interested in factual information and seeing it actually built. The plus is because you also have the circuit drawn up showing the scope readings. Thanks for nailing the creation of a useful educational well explained video. I have been trying for days to find the correct simplified video of it on the bread board. One question though. Is there a way to increase the sensitivity of the mic or does it pic up sounds from a few feet ok. For it to be used in a VU meter that is sound activated with addressable LEDs with nodemcu esp8266??

Thanks yes this circuit was aimed to use the least amount of parts. Leaving the gain pins open yields an amplification factor of 20.when I snapped my fingers it was a gain of 7.5 probably because I wasn’t using a large enough rail to rail voltage supply so it maxed out. You can boost it up to 200 times using the cap however be mindful of your power supply voltage that you don’t peak and distort your output due to a low voltage ceiling.
@retrorocketman6969
@retrorocketman6969 3 года назад
@@MostElectronics I have it built and I connected 1and 8 with the 10 uf cap and put a 10 k pot with the wiper on pin 3 the other side with mic output. I seen it makes a gain of 200. I have not tried it. Kinda waiting to hear from some other posts if it's ok. Do you know?

@@retrorocketman6969 make sure your supply voltage is high enough or else you’ll just peak out the amplifier and everything will be distorted

@@MostElectronics that is a good point and thanks. Now my thoughts are to pull the data sheet to get the max voltage on the electret mic and lm386 and set a max limit to prevent overlo and use another adj trim potentiometer. To obtain the best operating voltage. Does that sound ok? I surely don't want to smoke my IC because I'm limited and can't buy any.

question, noob here. if I got a mic in a tape machine like this and I snipped it and soldered a line in could I plug in and record music equipment into it without damaging the music equipment? I asked because I used my multimeter and found the 5v on the hot and didn't do the mod because I felt like it could damage my equipment like plugging in a keyboard and 5v going into the keyboards output.
@MostElectronics
@MostElectronics 2 года назад
It's possible, however you do not want to overdrive your recorder input. If you have an oscilloscope you can use that to see what is coming out of the tape machine. if you replace the mic with the tape machine you may just hear distorted music because the amplifier providing the gain for the mic is only expecting a few millivolts. If you put in 5V it will try to boost that and distortion/noise will occur.

@@MostElectronics thanks for the feedback. I got really into circuit bending recently, thought I found a mod on this toy keyboard that had a mic built in (cutting the mic and wiring a 1/4 input to the wires.) and It worked, I would get really cool crunchy distortion when I played my guitar through it. I checked it with a multimeter after watching this and found the same 5v you used in this circuit. lmao thats what I get for assuming I found a mod that no-one else in all their experience circuit bending have found. got some sweet recordings though and as far as I know my instruments I ran through it are doing fine. now I know. @MostElectronics
@MostElectronics 3 года назад
Sure
@awaismushtaq5719
@awaismushtaq5719 Месяц назад
You can. Electret capsule requires 0.5 mA current at 2 V so at 9 V source, you'll need (9-2)/(0.0005) ohms resistor. Simple. Now add DC blocking capacitor that shall act as a high-pass filter as well with capsule's resistor. The -3 dB cut-off is too be decided around say, 5 kHz; choice is yours, however.

i use a microphone that is plugged into a desktop computer in the microphone plug on the back of the motherboard and i use audacity in ubuntu 16.04. i can here the microphone but it is not loud enough. their is a thing called "48V Phantom Power Supply" but this is for Laptop which does not give the microphone its full 5 watt power. on my desktop it has that and so i was told that it would not allow me to increase volume. but could i use a "PRE-AMP" before i plug into the computer to increase its volume. or basically how do i increase volume.

What kind of microphone? The circuit in this video can be used as a pre-amplifier or PRE-AMP as you call it. If it is the microphone used in this video then yes its going to be very quiet if you just plug it into a computer mic input. If it is not then you may have to just adjust a gain setting on the computer program.
