While playing with this concept, I found that the thinner jugs like milk jugs and water jugs made out of hdpe tend to work the best with this heat gun. The cat litter containers were really thick, which was nice but also meant that it took a really long time to heat it enough to be easily molded.

Tip for this technique to make it go WAY faster. The sponge tends to get hot and then dry out so it's good to keep a bucket of water on hand to rewet the sponge but also big enough to dunk the skull in (or plastic hand, whatever you're heating up and bending). I use ice cream buckets since they are a great size and not too deep. Then you can not only push the parts in with the wet sponge but you can harden it SUPER fast by dunking it in the water once it's pushed in. Relying on just the sponge usually leaves the parts a bit soft unless you wait FOREVER for them to cool down. Dunking it in the water basically instantly solidifies it since the large amount of water transfers the heat super fast as apposed to just the wet sponge. This way sped up my process for shaping plastic by quite a bit.

Ice cream buckets are made with a lower viscosity and yes melt way easier and looser than regular HDPE. I've be suspicious for a while that they and other plastics labels as 2 are actual type 4 LDPE and they just slap a 2 on everything.

@@inventtory1272 I'm not using the ice cream bucket for melting. It's to hold the water to cool down the milk jug. I have just found that they are the perfect size rather than a deep bucket or taking a bowl from the kitchen.

I've seen the original video of the milk jugs skull! That's old.. OLD school RU-vid. Unfortunately it's gone now. It's was anywhere from 8 to 11 years ago and it was before a lot of the "modern" HDPE techniques popped up like Atomic Shrimp and TAOW's videos 8 years ago. Tho, maybe around the same time. I was obsessed with HDPE even back then and every so often I go scrounging around trying to find those old videos. Like the guy who reshaped grocery bags into pucks using heated oil on the stove and a tuna can. Lot of people were playing around with it before Atomic shrimp and TAOWs popularized better techniques. ALL of those old videos are gone. Back in the days of reply videos and before Philip DeFranco was talking about the news.

Sidenote: HDPE is my passion and I have an invention and techniques that I think make the process of DIY recycling plastic even easier, cheaper, better, and safer. I've been working on these ideas for those eight years. This is a bold thing to say but I think I've genuinely revolutionize DIY at-home recycling. I'll post a link to my channel but I'm terrible at making videos. My videos are awful. But I don't want to advertise my channel. I just want to talk to people about what I've been doing and I teach other people my techniques.

@@inventtory1272 This is awesome. I remember like 15 years ago in college I was interested in recycling HDPE but the process for me would've been like...cut up milk jugs with scissors into tiny pieces, heat to melt down, form into ingots/pucks. It was extremely laborious and I only made one. This looks super interesting!

@@AlexCue Thank you so much. One of best things about the methods I've come up with is that I've completely eliminated shredding. Which is what I believe is one of the largest obstacles holding back this form of crafting.

Thank you. I had no idea. Now all I need is an outdoor space and a heat gun and a skull mould and it's wall covering time. Or furniture. I love skulls. I think they are beautiful. I've got a whole heap of milk jugs. Thank you.

I'm here because my 3 year old daughter LOOOVES Christmas and I want her to have the happiest and coziest Christmases ever. To me that means light up blow molds, however they are WAY too dang expensive and I'm into the idea of using my artistic talents to make her custom Christmas blow molds. Thank you dear sir for passing on such awesome methods and techniques. I'll be saving all my milk jugs from here on out!

quite cool :) Why hot glue for the tissue paper?
@MAKE
@MAKE 2 года назад
already using hot glue for the rest of the foam, why switch to something else? Hot glue is FAST, since it just has to cool down and doesn't have to dry. It also sticks to the foam very well.

How well does acrylic paint take to them? This is a great technique but I'd like them to end up less shiny, more matte finish, more granular detail (cracks, teeth detail, etc.)
@anonymousopinion228
@anonymousopinion228 Год назад
I would think acrylic paint would go on pretty well ... layering might be difficult but if you let dry between coats and did it easy enough I think that you could get good depth with out messing the under layers ... seal it with some clear spray
