In our childhood( about 45 years ago) when there was no electricity in villages, people used to make and use them at night. They were kerosene lamps, in small glass bottles. There were 2-3 proper iron lamps with glass cover in the household, but for a short-time use, say, to go to the cow-shed to tend cows or to take a bath in the pond in the summer evenings, these were used. They were the equivalent of battery torches. They were called ' kupi' . I still can remember those oily amber coloured bottles( mostly old medicine bottles )with black burnt wicks. Even made one myself when I was a child. Our village was about 60 km away from Kolkata in Eastern India. Everything changed when electricity came to our village and the use of those 'kupis' stopped slowly. The heavy long battery torch which was considered a prized possession by the head of a family lost its prestige too with the passage of time.

What I do; instead of punching a hole in the cap, is use a thin piece of tin foil to hold the wick. That way I can use the cap on top of the foil to contain the oil. It makes it so I can throw it my backpack without spilling all of the oil out. Bottles with plastic caps work best for this method as the plastic won't stretch the way that tin caps will. Also I use olive oil. It's cheaper, safer, and easier to find. Different methods for different applications. Thanks for the upload.

I found this video to be useful and enjoyable. Perfect in fact. Hes so easy to listen too and the instruction really sinks jn. Some people are born teachers and we should cherish them! Its a sad world we live in to see the hateful rude comments or someone that thinks they can do it better or wants to change something. Why dont you start your own channel? At some point in time, people are going to find the life we once knew and took for granted , is forever gone. A little kindness goes a long way and might be the difference between going to bed hungry or being able to share a meal or a resource. We are teetering on the brink of collapse and i hope i dont live to see just how bad it gets before the final battle. This is a lovely video and im grateful for the time he took to put it out there for someone else's benefit.

Those bottles are made of TPE, you would need a blow torch to melt them. That stuff is indestructible and the must difficult to recycle.

I would like to add that if you are going to use a glass vessel, just please be sure that it either has a wide stable bottom or is secured, so as not to be dropped or knocked over!

I actually did something similar after a hurricane took out the power for 10 days. I used baby food jars, the laces from an old pair of sneakers (back in the day they were 100% cotton), and regular Wesson cooking oil. They threw a decent amount of light and lasted quite a long time. The wick had to be pulled up a bit every night, but I had plenty left when the power finally came back on.

thank you.i have about 4 med boxes of small bottles like this.my mother was a nurs and worked with docters .they would give her the bottles empty to bring home to us kids .I am 53 and I have them.now I can pull them out and enjoy them once again.thank you.again

yes they are.some steal have the siver ring and rubber stopper on them.some are shaped diffent. my mother was a nurs.she wore the with nurses hat.she steal has it to this day.again thank you.

Why are people so mean? What benefit do you gain from calling someone names through a computer screen? I think this was a pretty useful video, you never know what could happen and when you'll need something like this. Plus, Im all for recycling and using materials we already have. I thought these bottles were glass. I remember the old mini liquor bottles all being glass before, I believe some still are. I think baby food jars are still glass with metal lids on them, plus they are shorter and wider which makes them less likely to tip over.

Easier to get the baby food hard and cheaper to. Great idea! The meat can be used in soup's. The veggies can be mixed in anything. Fruit just taste good. Thanks for the idea!

Put in some water into your jar and keep the water level just below the wick. Then pour in your oil. Oil will rise to the top, as oil and water don't mix. You will then require less oil and save some money on the cost of lamp oil. Don't let the water touch the wick or the oil won't wick up the yarn properly. This trick is often used in making bottle torches and using tiki oil.

Just a thank you. Made these with the kids in the dark of a Winter's evening to embellish a story we were reading. It was a hit & a useful lesson on self sufficiency. Even the grown up kids were impressed when they saw them. They live in the kitchen window for power cuts & just being pretty.😊

Super cute to use for decor at a function such as a Christmas or even a July 4th or a wedding reception. Add some floral or other decor strung out on the table and people will agree the decor is unique.

Thanks for sharing. The same concept, but we used our empty ink bottles for making such lamps. Such candles were our saviors when the power would go off and we had to study during night times for exams. Being from an underdeveloped country like India, we had to improvise such things since the wax candles were expensive back then. And, we always had kerosene (Govt subsidized) at home that was used as fuel in such glass bottles.

I would use glass bottles, plenty of liquors come in glass, and olive oil for fuel. And you could decorate the bottles or hide em in candle holders for dramatic effect.

excellent work, very useful for those countries which will be bombed by Nato forces and in case they will stay without electricity they can use this technique. Also, I had a similar experience during 1999 when Nato attacked my country and bombed it with depleted uranium, anyway what we can do military production must continue.I would like to share with you my patent.I used a jar with water and just on top I pour some canola oil and i didn't have a wick i used cotton laces and i got it through a sliced piece of wine cork which I pierced actually made a hole and wrap it with aluminum foil and get lace through the hole.and put in in jar.Oil is easier than water so the amount of oil will get on top and water will stay down. And for 78 days of bombing, I spent less than one-liter oil and I stayed alive. I am thankful to God. Nato forces bombed the power plant so we stayed several times without electricity 5 to 6 days.

What a fun project! I have been looking for some fun ways to provide some light for evenings on the back deck, and it seems like these little guys are fairly bright and easy to make. I even have some of these bottles lying around because I didn't want to get rid of them.

I love it when people go back to the basics with survival etc!!! In a survival situation a person has to work with what's around them, there's no way to go to the local store and purchase it. Definitely give you an A++!!! I've seen some people reply mocking some peoples ideas and quickly realized that those people will be the first to die in a FUBAR ed situation... Simple and creative and efficient for its purpose!

this is a traditional way of making lighting device in our country nepal. this is still being used in rural areas where no electricity is there. glass bottle is used and the fuel is kerosene.

I made something like this while i was in high school after a very strong storm due to a black out and boredom. what i used was an empty vitamin bottle and a strand from a mop not yet used. The fuel i used regular vegetable oil. It worked very well less smoke compared to regular lamp that we used that uses kerosine as fuel.

I’ve made this kind of light for years. I’ve emptied a lot of the bottles (rough but someone had to do it 😁) I use chopsticks to push the wicks down and around the bottom of the bottle. I use caps without holes, with the seal still in them, to seal the bottles for transport. Great video 👍

how the wicks holds on top of bottle if you dont use caps? ? does wicks have any suport?

@@MrNiceCobra I use a punch instead of a drill and punch from the BOTTOM of the cap which leaves a little ragged edge on the lid. This allows great grip on the wick from slipping back down in the bottle. I’ve used different size wicks and use a punch just a little under sized for the wick. Just be sure to feed the wick in from the bottom of the lid. When not in use you can use a lid without a hole to seal the bottle and keep the oil inside.

I made a couple 3 winters ago, when the temp dropped down to -20 and lower, out of the 4 oz canning jars, Took a piece of cardboard, and cut some Mylar heat reflector and double sided tape, and fitted it to the jar. We had lost power and it was cold! Took 3 of these placed them in medium stock pots and put them in the bathroom. The Mylar reflected the heat onto the pots heating them, and made a radiant heat source to keep the bathroom above 50 degrees, (I have a small bathroom, shower stall only, which I also used some Mylar to reflect the radiant heat).

The "dilemma" at 13:59 ? Basic answer, if you're really worried about the plastic bottles melting, then use glass....My personal suggestion would be to use those tiny, annoying little baby-food jars.

Was taught to use a small darning needle to get the wool through tyhr hole. Always keep a couple handy for winter power cuts. Safer than candles and can be refilled, olive or vegetable oil works as well if you don't have lamp oil.

😊 THANKS !!! 🎐 My parents used to make their own , 🥣 like containers (I think they had some sort 🤔 of a handle , for the stable (on the brick WINDOW 🪟 SILL) INSTEAD of expensive caresine lanterns ! 🏮 ! My God, you have rekindled my childhood days, when i was based in Kenya, we used to have to light our mud hut with oil lamps, and my bicycle had a oil filled head lamp too, that kept most predators at bay, once we had a close shave with a lion trying to enter my hut, brought the flame closer to his face and he ran off, we also kept a long branch with oil soaked rag ready to burn in case the lione does come in and we must then deter him from coming any closer to us, pure jungle living , much different to living now with tablets and LED torches with such a powerful beams that you could shine the lunar surface on a very dark night.

3,000 years ago people used vegetable oil. Their lamps were called "oil lamps". They had a different design. These little lamps here would be more stable, and less likely to tip over, if they were made of glass. For instance some brands of olive oil have a very small bottle ("travel size"). Or some quality spices are sold in wide-mouth glass jars with a metal lid.

Great idea! Use a small hair pin to thread the yarn through the lids or a thin piece of wire bent in half. Thanks a bunch for this tutorial. Btw..how long will each bottle or wick burn?
