This is how I make my soy wax melts.
Each melt is 20-22 grams.
Melted to 150 F degree ( 66 C Degree )
The mold is a Mini Muffin tray.
Holds 240 grams of wax ( Including fragrance & Dye )
Each of my fragrances have a different color and I have a database of every fragrance I use.
My wax is Soy Pillar Blend. This was is generally used for making pillar candles, votives and soy melts.

If found the best and safest wax that won't burn if accidently tipped over is Ecosoya CB135 known now as Q220 now + I add 2tsp beeswax to 200g soy wax as it takes out the ions out of the air that cause allergies and respiratory infections & even when not melting the scent throw is amazing - each one lasts up to 6 days :)
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 6 лет назад
I found CB135 (massage wax) a little soft for soy melts. I prefer a harder melt so it can be removed from a oil burner. But if that combo works for you. Well done :)

Another great tutorial, will definatly try these, any idea how long the scent last ? A question I'm sure will be asked by customers!!, thanks for sharing
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 3 года назад
Depends how its used. I suggest to people use it until its melted to liquid then turn the burner off. This allows for the smell to be release but also to make it last. If they do this about 4-8 hours.
@DeanWilson

Venus X - I only use Pillar Blend for my soy melts and votives. GW464 I only use for containers. I never mix the 2 together. 464 is too soft and will not pop out of my metal molds.

Hi, thank you for this video! Can you make a video with all natural ingredients,scents and color please!
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 8 лет назад
+Suzanne Rael Hi, I assume by "natural" you mean Essential Oils? If so, I can't help with that as I don't use EO in my products. Here is why. EO are not designed for candles. Some have low flash points and can be very dangerous around a flame. The flash point of each essential oil is different. Many of the common essential oils, such as tea tree, lavender, and citrus oils, are classed as a Class 3 Flammable Liquid, as they have a flash point of 50-60 °C.

Hi Dean, can Golden Wax 464 soy wax be used for melts as well or only pillar soy wax? Also really good to wax a video explained well.
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 3 года назад
GW464 is more of a candle jar wax, it will stick to whatever container its melted in. The reason I was using pillar blend is because its a solid wax, meaning it will pop out of the container easy, ready for a new wax piece.
@NYtalk60
@NYtalk60 8 лет назад
Thank you for video Dean. I really want to try these. Is there a particular soy wax I should use? I hear some people use container wax vs pillar. I would really appreciate your help with this because I really don't know where to start.
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 8 лет назад
+NYtalk60 I use Soy Pillar Blend because it's a hard wax. Container wax (or Golden wax 464) is designed to stick to the edge of the glass, hence hard to get out of a mold - with saying that I know of a few people that say they use 464 for melts. Give it a try :)

hey Dean I am just getting into making wax melts and I had a questions. the wax I've ordered says my maximum scent load is 12% but most of my scents only allow up 1 to 5 percent. what should I do?
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 7 лет назад
Go with what the supplier suggests per fragrance. The wax may hold that much but the fragrance can't be used more then the supplier suggests. It's really important to only do the max from the fragrances point of view. For melts I use 10% MAX For jars I use 8% MAX.

Great tutorial :) Just wondering do you have any cleaning up tips? Im finding the pillar blend a pain in the butt to clean up out the jugs lol
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 9 лет назад
+Kara Manuel When I finish there is normally a little wax left in my pouring pot. I put this back into the crock pot and melt it down, put a tissue inside and let the tissue absorb the wax. The wipe with Viva paper towel. I then put water into the pouring pot and let it boil. Put another viva towel inside and wipe up the remaining wax. Now because wax can clog up your sink, I never pour that down the drain. I pour that water back into my crock pot. Saves my sink and makes the room smell nice. :)

I have done up to 3 colors per melt but it takes a long time to make. Also when picking colors they will change when melted. E.g. Blue + Red = Purple. Pink + Yellow = Bright Orange etc. I just pour a tiny bit in each mold and try and get them as even as possible. Thats it.

I work in out in grams. 10% max of fragrance oil. So if you have 1kg wax, 100 grams of fragrance (depending on the fragrance supplier). Some fragrances max level is less then that.

Hi, can I ask how you ensure you are CLP compliant as they have no packaging? I have been making my own and thinking of selling so enquiring for this reason, thanks :)
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 6 лет назад
I'm in Australia and we don't have CLP compliant rule here. I checked with my local council when I was running my retail shop and they said everything was fine. It's like Lush selling bath bombs not wrapped. Because your not eating or putting on your skin it doesn't effect the body.

They don't need to be in a package to hold the scent? I'm looking into making my own melts for myself & I've always heard they need to be stored in a special plastic (polyurethane maybe?) or the scent will dissipate over time.
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 7 лет назад
I only had my melts displayed in the open inside takeaway containers on a large table. They never lost their scent. I was using Soy Pillar Blend. It might be different from other waxes.

Hi Dean, can you do the same process with beeswax?
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 7 лет назад
I have not used beeswax for melts, only for tapper candles but im not a fan of beeswax for candles. It's so messy.

hola dean. quisiera saber especificamente que cera usas para hacer la masa fundida. yo tengo cera de soja. pero queda muy blando
@DeanWilson

@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 7 лет назад
No debe haber humo blanco. La única cosa que debe ser liberado de un quemador de aceite después de poner el derretimiento en, es la fragancia en el aire.

Hello, is there anyway you can make a new video on making wax melts ? How to make different color wax melts I want to learn how to color the wax please and thank you
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 8 лет назад
It's the same process. If you half the wax qty, pour half into the tray, then wait for that to set, then do it again with a different color. I currently don't have any wax and im not selling wax melts anymore, so I cant do another video on that right now. I will put it on my todo list. :D

How long does these scents normally last when you start burning them?
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 4 года назад
Depends how you burn them. Melt them until liquid then let them harden. I find this the best way to get the max smell. Once hard start melting again. If you melt it consistency then maybe 4-8 hours. My way maybe 20 hours.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing. I'm deathly allergic to Soy. What other types of wax would you recommend?
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 9 лет назад
+MACTackleBox You could try Palm wax or Paraffin. But you would need testing as the fragrance levels might be different.

HI Dean, I really enjoy all your vids, very informative and educational. I have learned a lot from you on your melt and pour soaps Do's and don't... Lol. Increasing my line of HP soaps .I have tried these soy wax ( not pilar) and the lemongrass EO I added burns off pretty quickly ( 10 min) and I'm left with just heated soy wax that I have to dump.Is this because I used regular soy wax and not pilar candle wax? Did I not use enough fragrance? I would greatly appreciate any input. Thank you again for your videos ;)
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 7 лет назад
I use about 8% to 10% for Pillar Blend soy wax for my soy melts. They hold the fragrance for about 4 to 6 hours. When I make my melts, I melt 230 grams of wax, 15-20grams of fragrance. But I don't use EO. Only FO.

great video, i am new to making candles, i have been doing research on it and i would love to make my own business hear in the UK would you say it is profitable and worth the time? thanks
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 7 лет назад
When starting out, you will spend all your profits and put them back into the business. I found it took me 6 months to start making good money to live on. If you can pick up constant business (which is hard) then you will be fine. Treat it as a hobby to start with and grow slowly and build up your name. No point putting $10,000 into it and finding out it doesn't work for you. It's long hours and expect little in return for a while. I know that seems doom and gloom but thats small business.

If I put them in the freezer would they harden faster?
@DeanWilson

I am not sure. I have never done that. I have always waited 3-4 hours then popped them out of the muffin trays.

Hi if I am melting 230g can I add 20ml of fragrance?
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 7 лет назад
For Pillar blend wax, you can add up to 10%, so 20ml is fine. But check with your supply about the percentages.
@dom9269

How much profit per 240g is one able to make
@DeanWilson
@DeanWilson 5 лет назад
That would depend on how much it costs you to make. I told my melts for $1 each but I have seen others sell them for $2.50 each, so it all depends on inventory prices and your sale cost.

+Christina Geller When I had my retail shop they were $1 but normally a retail sells them for $1.50 to $1.95 Some shops sell them for $3.95
