Thank you. I just finished a slow stitched quilted bowl which isn’t as bowl shaped as I would like. I remember my mom using the sugar starch for her crocheted items. Of course I never knew how she made it.

I get my doilies at thrift stores also but I never thought I was rescuing them , they weren't inane harm , I'm glad to find them there
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
Yes, it is such a great way to use doilies. And if you get tired of them, or don't like the shape, you can just wash them out!

I found it to be a little bit thicker than water is this right? I haven't used it yet because I'm scared I've done it wrong.
@createandcrochetwithpatricia

Yes, it will be thick and very sticky! You've not done anything wrong. The syrup can be stored in the fridge for some time. I kept mine for a few weeks and just reheated it to eliminate any sugar crystals.

I learned how to Sugar starch from my grandmother decades ago unfortunately I also learned that ants like sugar starch projects I went to hobby stores and found stiffener that worked much better and didn't get eaten by ants
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 3 месяца назад
It must depend on where you live in the world. I've used sugar starch for over 50 years and I've never had a problem with ants. But if it is a problem, then a commercial stiffener is a good choice for sure.

Hey, does n't it get ant or fungal attack? İs it just a beauty bowl or can it carry light weight like crochet fruits or crochet materials ? Pls answer. Your project is really cute n nice🎉🍁🌷👍🎆 i will try to make it.Thanks a lot for sharing a creative idea🌱🌹🌿
@createandcrochetwithpatricia

I've never had problems with the sugar starch and I've had some crochet ornaments for over 40 years...no bugs, ants, mice or fungus. I've not used the bowls for things like fresh fruit that could rot and leave residue in the bowl, but I've used them for nuts, cones, candy (in wrappers) and things like that. The nice thing about the sugar starch is that if the bowl becomes damaged for some reason, you can just wash it and re-starch it!
@silmahernandez8536

Very nice but I would like to know would it last
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 3 года назад
It will last for several years so long as it doesn't get wet or is handled in a rough way. I have a crocheted bell ornament that my mom made for me over 30 years ago using this method, and I just re-starched it when I did this tutorial (and it really didn't need it)
@judethfenton5978
@judethfenton5978 11 месяцев назад
You could just cover the bowl in cling film like you do for papier mache? It would stop it sticking.

I'd love to stiffen doily to make it a wall clock. Not sure if sugar starch or pva glue would work best. Any input is highly appreciated:))
@createandcrochetwithpatricia

@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 2 года назад
It can be used to hold all sorts of items like decorations, napkins, cookies etc. I use mine for dried pinecones. The starching is also used for Christmas ornaments and snowflakes.

My mixture was sticky the next day. Also when I took it off the bowl, the edges sort of wilted. Maybe I didnt let it bowl long enough. Please advise what I did wrong.
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 10 месяцев назад
You may not have squeezed enough liquid out of the fabric. That would result in a longer drying time and a thicker starch in the end. You can rinse it out and try again or just let it dry longer.

Will this return to a doily if I try to clean this bowl with soap and water? Will I have to spray with some type of sealer to keep it from becoming a sticky mess when it gets wet?
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
Yes, you can just wash the sugar solution out and the doily will return to its former condition. I would not get the starched bowl wet at all, otherwise, it will become damaged. If you think the bowl may come in contact with moisture, then you would probably want to use a glue/water solution to starch the bowl. There is a comment somewhere below with a recipe for a glue-based solution. This would not wash out, however...

I have. Some toy bowls. Is there a way to make this work to be semi pliable still
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
No, not really. It will create a stiff finish because of the sugar. You could look for tutorials that might use something like silicone, which is more pliable. But I haven't seen anything like that myself...

Mine didn't work. It never got cool enough to use before it solidified
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 2 месяца назад
I'm sorry to hear that... I've never had that happen, so I'm not sure what to suggest. The only thing I can think of would be to add a little less sugar, so it stays flexible longer.
@lindsaycooke5587
@lindsaycooke5587 Год назад
Hi can I use this for crochet jewellery?…thanks
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
I would probably use a starch made with glue rather than sugar. The problem being, if the jewelry were to get wet, the sugar would dissolve, whereas glue would not. If you scroll down in the comments, I believe someone once left a link to a recipe for a glue based starch.

If you have a problem with ants, then perhaps that could happen. I've had sugar-starched Christmas ornaments for over 30 years and I've never had a problem. :)
@jessicag630

How do you keep your house free of ants for 30 years? Do you use ant baits or pesticide regularly? Or is it probably because you live in an extremely cold city?
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 2 года назад
@@jessicag630 I've never had the ants get at the sugar-starched items. I have had ants over the years and I would sprinkle cinnamon powder at the threshold of each doorway (or where they were getting in) and that would detour them from coming in.

My concern exactly!. Living in a tropical country, even the sweet smell of oil/ ghee/ roti attracts ANTS. Besides i thing warm/ moist climate would make the sugar starched doily STICKY
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 2 года назад
This is a good point about living in different parts of the world. In the northern climates, this isn't an issue, but I can see how it would be in a tropical climate! You may want to look for recipes that use some sort of water base glue or a non-sweet starch. Here are some ideas: www.fabricfits.com/how-to-make-fabric-stiffener/

Was this video sponsored by ants? Hahaha. In my.place ants would invade these being coated in sugar
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 5 месяцев назад
I didn't think anyone would catch on to that sponsorship! 🤣😁 So, I think it has to do with where you live in the world. I've had some comments about attracting ants, but where I live (the Pacific Northwest), I've never had a problem with this. I have several crocheted ornaments that my mom made over 40 years ago, that have been stored in attics, crawl spaces, garages and basements, and they've never attracted ants. Somewhere in the comment section, someone shared a recipe for a glue based starch. That might be a better choice!
@briennaasher26
@briennaasher26 25 дней назад
is it sticky? If you have an ant problem would they go for it? 😂
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 25 дней назад
Some people have had issues with ants. Where I live on the west coast of British Columbia, I've never had a problem. I have Christmas ornaments from over 40 years ago. If it is too sticky, then you may have added too much sugar, or it just may need more time to dry.

I have never had a problem with this...fruit on the counter, yes, but not these bowls. I have some snowflakes that my mom made over 40 years ago, and they have never been compromised by any vermin.
