You don't have to be a stay at home parent to home school your child. It's only like an hour/hour and a half to get through a days lesson. 30 minutes is the required minimum. You just arrange for your child to be at a daycare or something while both parents are at work

There are homeschool groups now. Basically a parent of another kid who is being homeschooled takes in a whole group and makes sure they are learning what they need. You then do what you can for extra curriculars. probably coordinate with parents in the group to put your kid on the same teams as thier kids. Basically build a new community of like minded people. You are not alone.

My son will be starting kindergarten in the fall and we got him into a charter school and we took a tour a few months ago and I’m truly amazing how much better it for him than a public school

@@bettycooper369 got it so basically both are free public schools that also get additional funding from corporate or individual contributions to fill the gap that funding from federal or state may have. This schools also tend to have very involved parents with similar academic or artistic values who are more involved and closer to other parents to ensure their kids are having a good education. This involves money and time commitment but I think is worth it. Many charter and magnet school are the best in the nation and tend to have better graduation rates. Some unfortunately don’t succeed in their vision so people need to careful when researching their school of choice

Sheeesh i relate to this. Although i asked to be homeschooled for portions of my school years... My parents had not figured out the important lessons for me, looots of fun memories and independent thought but now i work in customer service for amazon of all places and when i say it broke me, completely ripped me apart, broke me in and is now anchoring me down while i still try swim against the current... @@Dogtrio that is very true. My parents probably would have homeschooled me if they had the time. But my mom works fulltime as an EDI manager for a health care company and my dad is a handyman who never puts in effort for anything responsibility wise other than something that can get him money.

Yeah, the homeschooled kids in my hometown ended up on drugs for the most part, and were homeschooled because their parents were also drug users, dealing with truency violations, or not able to control their kids enough to keep them in school.

Same with my friend group. But those that did drop out were not really homeschooled, they were just neglected by their parents. I was homeschooled, and moved 7 times in my first 12 years, and I agree it sucks I do better in school (3 years ahead in some classes) but I’m an extrovert with the social ability of an introvert. I love my mom, but I believe it’s for the convenience, not because she wants to actively teach and help them herself… my brother begged her to let him go back, because learning through a computer is hard for him, but she hasn’t let him and now he’s in summer school and she doesn’t want to take accountability that yeah, he could try a little harder, but so could she to tutor him and sit with him in the ways schools traditionally do (or use to anyway…). So, they’re “homeschooled” but it’s with computers from the public school they are enrolled in. I went to school, but after I would go home and be stuck at home. I compensated by becoming a really good artist, but I really wanted to do gymnastics. My kids are homeschooled. Everyone comments on how much more mature and resilient they are than their peers. They play sports, sing in the choir, take music lessons, and are involved in our church.

@@Stinkmeaner420 I think that was true even 5-10+ years ago, but since Covid a ton of families have chosen homeschooling. I have quite a few friends who are just like me with homeschooling. They are involved in a lot of outside activities and their kids are socially well adjusted. There's been a big shift in the last 3+ years toward homeschooling. That said, I know there are some people who still fall into this category of self-isolation, so it's not all of us, but I think you'll see a change in the typical homeschooler over the next decade.

I consume a lot of true crime content and in sooo many of the cases where children are terribly abused and/or murdered by their parents the common theme is they were homeschooled (often pulled out of school when teachers catch on and make a report to cps). That's how so many fall through the cracks bc there's no one on the outside who sees what's going on. I think homeschoolers should have to report to cps/be subject to random audits from social workers to minimize this risk bc even though that's invasive thats the only way to ensure children aren't be horrifically abused and neglected under the guise of "home-schooling"

This happened to a lot of people in the region. We managed to stay together, but ended up homeless in the lower 48. Thrown from a pristine wilderness to a place where it's not recommended to drink the water. They've done this to so many, all over the country. We were the last frontier.

I feel like when people say that some homeschooled kids are “weird” what they really mean is “unsocialized”. Sometimes homeschooled kids have trouble reading social cues, finding and making appropriate friends, cooperating with their peers, etc. You can be the weird kid in school but still learn to get along with your peers well enough to do school projects, have a friend group you can count on, etc.

What are you talking about! I was bullied through high school, horribly. I changed schools because I almost failed out because I was an emotional wreck at school. I knew every trip down the hallway meant some girl laughing at me or aggressively name calling and acting as if they were going to harm me. Had I been at home, I would have thrived. I could have had the ten kids on my block to socialize with. The church I attended, the AAU teams that I played on. All without making the petty relationships that come along with public school and all of the wasted time there.

I think the difference was that their mom was intentional about making sure they were in different community sports, they were part of orchestras, they did girl scouts. One is now a nurse and the other going to PT school. The ones that sequester their kids at home and give them nothing...that's where there is the problem.

The meet the minimum requirements for state/federal testing and then they’re taught useful lessons about the world and how to exist in it. Rather than mathematics and science that they will never use in their life. School wastes so much time and teach almost nothing useful. For example, taxes and money management. I remember the fond days of having group studies with our parents and neighbors to solve problems. It’s all about putting in the work early so your offsprings can move up and prosper. This was my experience being homeschooled. Even today as a 35 year old woman with kids of her own, making eye contact is extremely difficult for me to do. There are other challenges too but its very easy to spot a homeschooled person because you get an immediate sense somone is "off" and that they might have been homeschooled just by observing their behavior. My kids are in public school and I wouldnt have it any other way.

I’m sure there are plenty of exceptions but these are likely the kids parents didn’t do social events and activities with, or who are neurodivergent and would struggle with these same social skills in a public school environment as well. I knew several kids in public school who were “awkward” socially. There are a lot of factors that go into whether a kid is socially adept and location of schooling is just not one of them.

My parents weren't very strict about me going places with friends but I didn't really have any friends so I felt like there was no point in going out unless it was somewhere like the grocery store with my mom. I didn't feel like I didn't have the freedom to go anywhere but I didn't want to go alone so I would just stay at home doing whatever it was that kept me busy

The things homeschooling is only good if you have educated parents of which one parent at least has to stay home for a full school day, which in this economy gets less and less possible. Also if american public school would be better homeschooling would be a lot less viable or useful, there is a lot more to consider when you talk about simple outcome. I was raised by a single working mom, I finished my bachelor and I went to school in Germany where the schools score way higher then in the US, I would have never been able to go to college if not for the german school system.

U were in church, that's the first mistake. Smart people don't go to church. You were indoctrinated by your parents, you weren't well behaved, you just lost your mind...

That isn't the flex you think it is. I was that kid. My mom had us trained like that and adulthood slapped us like a shit ton of bricks. There isn't anyone to tell you what to do when your 30. And not a single soul cares that you were the first one to stop talking in a room full of adults. I didn't stop getting taken advantage of for naivete until I was a little past 30. I realized nobody cared I was well behaved, and they used the fact that I would comply and do the right thing to make me come up last.

This isn’t a brag. That’s the problem with homeschooling. People think children being silent and chill is a sign of good behavior. Why do children need to be obedient to be deemed as respectful and good? Children should be treated as equals. Children should not be sitting still and in silence. Children being quiet and still is just as bad as children being loud and out of control.

To the comments under this post: I don’t think it’s so much about being “well behaved” as it is about being respectful. If you are only ever quiet, or don’t know how to stand up for yourself, then that IS an issue. However, it is necessary to learn how to listen, be polite, have self-control, and to be a respectful to other individual. As a homeschooled student who was more on the quiet side, I was quiet because I wanted to learn, and I couldn’t do that while my peers were being distracting and downright rude. I also value other people’s opinions, thoughts, and emotions, but that requires me to be quiet and listen. Sometime input is better than output. It’s ultimately about situational awareness though, which can come in many forms. Both sides of the coin have benefits, but I think it is also good to be able to use your voice and actions accordingly.

By the time 25 came around I was the least mature of my friends because I had to deal with growing pains when I was full grow (which takes way longer, is super frustrating, is embarrassing, and hurts way more). @@pennyroll teaching students that it’s ok for another student to have two moms, two dads, or living with another family member/foster family is fine. What’s NOT ok is teachers trying to teach complex information to children. And by complex information, I am specifically talking about sexuality. I don’t believe in the whole “there’s more than two genders” bullshit so the only real issue is sexuality. Sexuality is a complex issue that I believe shouldn’t be taught by teachers but rather the parents of a child. Counselors and health teachers at school can offer students information about the different sexualities in the case that the student is curious or is in a conflicting household situation, but that stuff should primarily be left to the parents. Let the parents teach their kids why they have two uncles instead of an uncle and aunt, let the parents teach their kids why they have two moms instead of a mom and dad, let them teach their kids why Uncle Tom was dating a woman last year but is now dating a man this year. This information is delicate to a child’s mind and I honestly don’t have a lot of trust in teachers nowadays to explain this kind of stuff without somehow having their own political opinion mixed in

@@amomto4 thank you :-) Back in the 80’s and 90’s when my parents were taking my brother and I all around the world to live, many of our friends and family were critical of their decisions and warned my parents about the “dangers” of withdrawing us kids from school and our social circles. My parents were very brave to ignore the fear mongering! It changed my whole life and I will thank them for it til the day I die.

I wouldn’t say homeschooled kids I knew were weird, but most I knew were not super well socialized. That has more to do with the parents though. There are a lot of parents who home school their kids for the wrong reasons, and want to control their life.

Even if they are, most parents just don’t have time or don’t care. My mother is a home school teacher and an overwhelming amount of her students’ parents don’t help their kids or make sure they finish their assignments, even if it’s just five minutes to do so.

Why? She's well spoken, outgoing, knowledgeable, brave, etc Some students at Ivy League schools can barely connect two sentences.

Certainly not the only safe option. I don’t have kids yet, but when I do they are definitely not going to a state funded public school. Hopefully I will be in a position to send them to a private school, where I can be slightly more involved and have an easier time vetting. I went to a private school that was great, and it wasn’t one of the pretentious ones either.

@@simba4845 remember the transgender person who shot up the Christian private school recently? Private school is a much better option, but still isn't the same as having your kids in an environment you manage. I have 3 kids. 1 on the way. My eldest is school age. I home school all of them. 😉

@@Ms.Calculation actually I never heard that story, what should I search on Google to find it? I feel that homeschooling is perfectly fine and good for children when it’s done correctly. But a lot of parents I’ve met that homeschool their kids don’t do a great job socializing them, and often want to indoctrinate them with their own ideas. Many public schools do the same thing, but I hope to raise children that can think for themselves and make their own wise decisions. I hope yours are doing great though!

@@yoleeisbored in your opinion, what is more important? Socializing them in a school environment or keeping them away from all of the dangers that go along with public school? Socialization can be done anywhere at any time at all. School yards aren't the only option.
