I recently lost 50 lbs and while I typically wear clothes until they completely wear out with no thoughts about fashion, some of my stuff is pretty much falling out. It’s way too worn out to donate so I’m going to use all the knits for yarn! I have a rotary cutter now, too. Game changer.
I am all about making as little waste as possible, and after watching several videos that made it seem sadly impossibly to use more than just the lower half of a plain T-shirt, this video was a very welcome refresher. Glad to see a little imagination can offer you much more and waste much less!!
Thank you so much for the kind comments. I guess we're pretty frugal at heart so didn't want to throw any of it away :D . Thank you for watching. -Jane
Such an awesome idea. Just an idea though for the unusable scraps. You could save up all small unusable fabric scraps and put them in a sac for birds to come and pick through for their nest making.
@rita pita The only thing I can think is that a synthetic fiber may not curl like the all cotton...but you can try a tiny section, pull, and see if it will.
That is so very very clever! Now if I can jus remember... I was excited to learn how well this cord works for face mask cord instead of elastic. Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing. I was tempted to buy a roll of tsheet yarn at recent craft sale but $17Aus was pretty expensive. Now i know how to make my own. God bless & i look forward to seeing more of your tutorials.
This is the most comprehensive and understandable video on how to make t-shirt yarn I have ever seen! I have watched other videos on how to make t-shirt yarn before and could never quite understand how it ended in one long strip of fabric and I they never caught my interest enough for me to watch them until I might understand either. Thank you! I will finally be able to use the shirts I’ve been keeping in the hopes of eventually understand how to turn them into yarn.
You just made our day Mac. We're so happy you foung this video helpful. Thank you so much for watching. We hope you get to make lots of wonderful crafts with your t-shirt yarn! -Jane
I used to know a lady that made huge rag rugs out of her husbands old suits. She had some kind of small machine that would make the long strips for her.
Been making masks for our large family and some friends because of the Coronavirus. I researched the mask making and talked to some nurses, surgical assistants, etc and they said that the masks with the elastic over the ears really make the back of ears raw. Even those those masks are faster and easier to make I wanted something different. So, I’ve been making masks using a halter style closing where the loop is at the back of the neck and it ties at the top. I cut up one T-shirt without side seams to make some continuous yarn by cutting around and around. But, not having any more no side seam shirts I started looking for alternatives and found your video. Love your method and I do have some tshirts with side seams. Will be doing it now so I can finish some more masks to help protect other people. I’ll bet you didn’t think when you made this video years ago that it would be used during a pandemic. Thank you and stay safe. Great video clear and concise and I didn’t mind the music.
I don’t throw away any scraps of yarn or anything soft and squishy because I use it for stuffing when stuffing dolls or pillows! So you really don’t need to waste any of the T-shirt at all!
This video may have been made 6 years ago but it is even more relevant today when we should be recycling/reusing as much as possible. I like how you used every little bit of the tee, and I even have a way to use the seams and other parts left over: In the garden! Those little strips would be great to tie up tomatoes and other plants that want to spread out and fall over. TFS! (BTW, making a plarn waste basket right now.)
Thanks for showing me how. We had a young activity where the kids made jump ropes out of donated T-shirts and this made it a lot faster and used more of the shirt than I planned on.
Thanks!! My husband finally cleared his closet before we move and I snapped two XL tshirts he never used, he was going to take them to the recycling center! I'm going to get a lot of yarn out of them😁
You are so welcome! We made a rag rug with the tshirt yarn - it's so soft and squishy: sustainmycrafthabit.com/diy-rag-rug-how-to-finger-crochet-a-circular-t-shirt-rug/ -Jane
I love the colors and my favorites are peacock, turquoise, syringa, plum and peach....I ma beginning to make my own tops and cardigans so this yarn would be perfect.
Thank-you so much. You were very precise in how to properly cut the t-shirt with almost no waste. The best I have seen so far (and I have looked at many videos on 'how to' do this). Thanks for showing us how and sharing your time and talent with all of us. I love to crochet with t-shirt yarn. The music was fun and light ... not to loud ... I could hear everything you said.
I've seen lots of people who make t-shirt yarn and this is the best video for making it because of the least amount of waste. Others just toss it and don't take the time to get the most of the t-shirt. Thank you for this video
This is amazing!!! I was about to spend $40 on yarn to make a basket (wedding gift) and now I can save money and time by just using the tshirts from the donate pile 🤯 the time I'd spend lugging them to the donation center will be well used prepping the tshirts ❤thank you so SO much!!!
Perfect! I saw someone make the cutest purse out of t shirt yarn (but hers was tshirt yarn she purchased) I thought about buying some but then my aunt told me I could make my own and sent me your video!…I don’t know why I didn’t think of it because I’ve used old sheets before to make yarn for a rug!
This is awesome! I have a lot of old, faded, ratty tshirts from my kids that I was just going to throw away, all of them together were not enough to do a patchwork. Now I can strip them down and dye it all, and make a casual throw out of it, you gave me some great ideas!
I appreciate this video, I always threw away the top part of the t-shirt and it felt like such a waste. The only thing I would say is please turn down the volume of the background music next time because the audio gets quite messy and hard to hear when it's this loud compared to your voice.
I will be back to rewatch your method - mine is almost the same, however, I loved the way you "saved" the pieces that most said to throw away. Thanks so much! BTW, I love working with t-shirt yarn. I've made a two (2) pet beds for my neighbor's fur babies and a few messed up ones for my cats LOL! The cats love them either way, but I am still attempting to "hone" in to make them easy and perfect.
Thanks for saying what you used the yarn for. I wanted to make a couple of baskets but I have cats. New cat beds after the baskets coming up. Going to be so easy, I will just make the circular base larger.
Very interesting video and quite useful. A suggestion for video editing: please consider lowering the volume of bgm whenever you are speaking, it is sometimes difficult to hear you over the music.
If you use a seam ripper instead of cutting the seams, you’ll get way less waste than having to worry about cutting like that. It may take longer to use a seam ripper tool yet it will be cleaner in the end results :-)
Thank you for this clear, brass tacks approach. I always laugh about people going out and buying fabric to make a rag rug, lol since the whole point is to use what you have. How did we get to be so bougie in this country?
Love this idea. Would be perfect to make a blanket for my cat with t-shirt yarn and I've got several shirts my work issued me that I get to keep forever that are too small and pretty much a mens size large/women's size XL so I'm going to turn them into yarn and knit my cat a blanket
Cool video, I want to do this. Did I hear correctly? You said to cut the strips in 1/4", or 1/2" for heavier shirts? Your strips are like 1"...your cutting measurements are way different than what you cut.
Thank you so much Liz. It is quite dependent on the shirt but yes, I should have said 1/2" to 1". The thinner the strips, the finer the yarn will be. You also risk the yarn breaking as the strips get thinner. But if you have a really heavy cotton shirt, 1" might be too thick. I'd suggest cutting one section such as the sleeve first, stretching it and checking if you're happy with the thickness of the t-shirt yarn. Thank you! -Sonja
Enjoy this video as I have a lot of hubby old T-shirts and want to make baskets this was great on how to cut the T-Shirt up, Thanks for sharing!! Liz x PS Subscribed to your channel looking forward to charck out more off your video's!!!
Going through my closet now, and any shirt that i don't want to put in a tahirt quilt, i will turn into tshirt yarn for a different project! It cleans out my closet, and i still keep the "shirt".
