Dan, Thank you so much for this ! I have made several for my husband since you introduced this fabulous martini. It has made him sooo much easier to deal with when I can get him a bit , shall we say, laid back. This has saved us a ton of money on counseling.

Benedictine! It's wonderful stuff, but you rarely see it mixed. For coffee liquor I prefer Patron XO Cafe. Not syrupy and with a touch of cinnamon and related spice. 🍸 Why the second strainer?

@mndlessdrwer 2 года назад
to remove any ice chips that might have developed or broken off during shaking. It's a good idea for drinks that you want to be very smooth, but it isn't strictly necessary. if you want to get 70% of the effect with less cleanup, you can buy additional coils for your Hawthorne strainer and just add them to it. Hawthorne strainers typically use a separated raised bit of metal to hold the coils, so you can remove them for cleaning. This allows you to also just add more coils to make it strain a bit better. You can also remove the coil and toss it into a shaker for added aeration during shaking for when you're making drinks like a fizz or anything else that calls for an egg white to produce heavy foam. Just toss in the coil and don't add ice yet, then just hold the shaker together to keep from making a mess while you "dry shake". This gives the egg white a chance to foam before the water and cold from the ice can get in the way. Crack the shaker back open, add in your ice and shake to chill or dilute as necessary.
@iDuckman

@@mndlessdrwer Thanks! for the info. I'll look out for the extra hardware. UPDATE: Patron XO Cafe (and it's spicy chocolaty cousin) have become increasingly hard to find. So I tried and have now converted to *Mr. Black* - a "cold brewed" coffee liqueur. Excellent coffee notes and less sweet than Patron. Check it out!

with all the love for the current espresso with tonic fad, I wonder how well this recipe could be adapted as a fizz with tonic water instead of club soda or seltzer. It could be an interesting new twist on a fizz, and the only real changes would be adding an egg white and dry shaking with a coil before adding ice, shaking for chill, and then straining into a Collins or highball glass and elongating with some tonic water.

Can't wait to try the recipe but: oh no - never never bang a boston shaker against the counter! bump it with your hand close to where the gap between the glass and the metal shaker begins (where they stop touching). The pint glass will shatter one day if you bang it against the counter and you'll also ruin the cocktail you're making (might know from experience)

The way he tried to break the seal by tapping it onto the counter made me cringe. As a bartender, I've always been told to never hit the shaker with a pint glass against the counter in case you hit it too hard or the wrong way and then the glass breaks into the drink.

In addition to using a shaker with two tins I find wiggling the small tin around to loosen it always works. You don’t try to pull it straight out, you sort of lever it to another angle and that loosens it
@batteyhead
@batteyhead 2 года назад
The shakers should form a straight line on one side when you put them together; when you want to release them, give a smack with the palm of your hand right where the two tins begin to separate from each other and you should hear a very satisfying click that indicates the pressure's been released and you can pull them apart. If you're using metal shakers, you can also just give a little squeeze (depending on your shakers) to get them to release. But yeah, please don't smack it against a countertop unless absolutely necessary for reasons listed above. Also just looks cooler :)

Dan this drink looks excellent…. But what the heck has it to do with a real martini? Even if you used vodka (or gin) it is still not a martini just because it is served in a “martini glass”. Again, it looks very good but sadly over the years all the wonderful traditional cocktails have been so bastardized they have little in common with their namesake. Just call this a “rum and espresso” cocktail, or “Rum on the Run” (because of the caffeine keeps you going - get it?).
