I don't know about hating on him but the way he went to build the bench isn't the greatest. You'll want better reinforcement in the frame. The veneer (bendy ply) wasn't glued properly. You need equal pressure on most of the surface so the glue has a better hold. He could have gotten a cheap router and a trim bit to get a better finish when timing any extra wood. Also sanding and adding some type of finish or at least a sealer. This will give you a better finish while simultaneously sealing the wood. So you don't have any rough surface or you don't have to worry about potentially staining the wood. So not only is the final result more of an unfinished bench, but it's also not structurally built properly. I'm not trying to shit on the guy and his build. It's a very nice design, he just needs to approach the build differently so itll last longer and hold more weight and also finishing the piece Instead of leaving it raw (unfinished)

@@NickonStark Yeah but this seat is going to begin to bend very quickly. There's not much support. Also, the wood veneer will likely easily be damaged as it was just laid on top of the wood underneath, which will warp and expand over time while the veneer stays the same shape, leading to cracking and damage. You can't really fix veneer like you can wood so he'd have to replace it.

If you see something just laying around at your local hardware store, by all means, ask management what they plan on doing with it, or if you can take it off their hands if they’re throwing it out I worked in musical theatre for the better half of my working life, and one thing I gathered from it is how to cut as many costs as possible. Looking at the comments. The people who are saying that the build is wrong, aren't just saying that. It's actually not the way to go about building something like this. There are no reinforcements in the frame, the veneer he used wasn't glued properly. This causes a weak hold so after awhile of use. The veneer will eventually start to peel right off. Also what he should have done when trimming the extra wood is use a trim bit for a router. Something that you can get cheap at a pawn shop. You'll have a better result, then sand everything down. The idea is there and the design is nice. But like many have said, including myself. The way he went about building it is not the proper way. Also he's most likely in the united states, cause I live in Canada and 215 for the materials is just not enough. It would most likely be double that where I live.

Edit: @Jacob Zander, if you read this, I admire your enthusiasm about your diy, but you should really consider getting some Tipps and expertise from someone more experienced. Your basic desing is good, but the execution is flawed. If you consider doing such a project again, feel free to dm me on instagram. My English is not the best, and it could take me some time to respond, but I would gladly help you out👍🏼 Original: As professional, trained woodworker I do NOT recommend the way this project was build. This is just a huge waste of material. Might look cool for a few days, will definitely break in the first two month of regular using.

@wolfgar_m9389
@wolfgar_m9389 2 года назад
Like Elizabeth said, no support structure, the „bendywood“ was not properly clamped down while glueing so it won’t stick to the underlaying construction as well, and he didn’t use proper joinery. He just screwd in wood which goes along the grain to head wood. Screws won’t hold in headwood, if you put them under lateral movement (like sitting down and slinding on it to reach the far end). You also will always scratch your cloth or skin on that edges if you don’t sand them down. If you want to do it the right way, look up „bent plywood“. This here is just a terrible diy where the builder has no expertise at all. I don’t say that you can’t do something like that yourself, but if you want to do a video about your built, please get a properly trained expert to help you with it. I do hope you understand what I am talking about, my English is a bit rusty😅 Edit: also, if you want to trim your „bendywood“, use a proper trimmer router (you can rent one of you don’t want to buy it). And if you don’t build a supporting bent plywood structure to support your top veneer (aka „bendywood“), it will break the fist time you accidentally kick it at one of those uneven round corners.

I think this dude would love constructive criticism that isn’t so self righteous! He seems really open to feedback and it’d be an amazing opportunity for both of you to collaborate and improve concepts to make these pieces accessible to diyers who want to make them themselves. You said your English is rusty so it could just be that it was unintentional but just addressing the poster straight on instead of speaking down about his work to his audience changes the emotion behind the comment and opens a dialogue!
