In this Video I show how to correctly make the wiring connections for a NuTone 8 Note Door Chime
NuTone 8 Note Chime can have either 4 Long Brass Tubes or 3 Short Brass or Silver Tubes with Metal Tone Bars inside the tubes.
This Video applies to almost every NuTone 8 Note Door Chime made since the mid 1950's through the mid 2000's
This Step-by-Step video covers all of the parts of the Door Chime System and I show how to connect up to 3 different entry doors for the classic: Front Door - Rear Door - Side Door Installation

We bought a 1989 manufactured home in 2012 that had an original 4 tube chime that went crazy when the power was turned on when we moved in. It was like the thing was stuck and everything was trying to strike at the same time and very loud. I took the plastic box off of the unit and pulled a couple of wires off of where they were connected in a panic but failed to note where they were attached to and didn't try to fix it at first. Later I was trying to figure out how to connect it up by looking at the printed instructions but really didn't understand which terminal those 2 wires should go to. I think that I understand thanks to your illustration, how to get my doorbell back into operation. I did put a new doorbell button on the front of the house because the old one didn't look like it was in very good condition. I think anyone could either troubleshoot a doorbell or install a new doorbell system with your excellent video! Thank you for your time and effort.

Thank you so much for this video. I have a NuTone L-41 "Symphonic" Westminster door chime installed in my parents new home in 1957. Before my siblings and I put the home on the market last year, I removed the NuTone chimes plus two Honeywell Taplites. Thanks to your video I was able to understand the "common" connection. I couldn't understand why, before I saw this video, the chimes would not work through the full 8-note routine unless you held the front door button down for the duration. Working perfectly now. Especially nice to have this still operating in my home since the old family home was torn down. The new owners will be putting up something bigger in its place.

Thank you for this post! I had issues with my doorbell and decided to try placing 9-volts in it to no avail. I likely disconnected the wiring and wired it back up incorrectly. It has not been operative for a year. I decided to buy a new NuTone and installed that... Same issue... it failed to work. Your video clearly and articulately described the common and trans wiring and made complete sense. The NuTone diagram was not clear to me and did not describe or have any markings for Trans or Common. With the assistance of your video I tested the OLD Chime and Voila, works like a charm... Returning the new one for a $239 credit back to my card. THANK YOU!

People really get attached to their NuTone Door Chimes. They move them from house to house, but often have a hard time finding someone to install and connect the Chime. This is a fairly simple task, once you see someone do it the first time. Connecting up a NuTone 8 Note Door Chime is a very good project for beginners and not only will you have lots of personal satisfaction for a job well done - You will save lots of money not having to pay for a job that you can do. - Chris

Thank Harvey and You!!! Your video helped me out. I am in the process of replacing a standard Nu-Tone 2 bell 2 door chime with a Broan-NuTone LA70MA Doorbell. I could not get the bloody thing to work. Obviously I had it wired incorrectly. This video explained exactly why it would not work and how to rewire the circuits. What's strange though, the transformer is mounted in the attack and I live in So Cal. Am I at risk for fire now that I have constant current going to the chime vs intermittent current the way it used to be wired?
@northsideservicecompany3567
Hi simisoundguy: The topic of Transformers that are installed in an attic is complicated. Typically is is not allowed if you have an attic that you must crawl around in (hands & knees) and it's full of insulation. The Transformer should never be buried in or covered over with insulation. Attic can get very hot during the summer, perhaps as much as 150 degrees. This is simply way to hot for a Transformer. If you have a walk-in attic with a platform or other flooring, it may meet electrical code to have the Transformer in the attic space. As for "fire risk" - your Transformer is not any more of a risk than it was before, when it was wired for a 2-Note Chime. In your original installation, the Pushbutton was not turning the Transformer on & off - it was simply completing the low-voltage circuit to make the Chime ring. In either configuration, the Transformer is always on. If you have concerns about the safety of your Transformer, hire a qualified, licensed Electrician to evaluate the situation and make a determination about it meeting the Electrical Code - Chris

I recently acquired a Nutone LD-49 Door Chime. My present doorbell has only three wires (coming from the wall) one for the transformer, one for the front door and one for the rear door. From your extremely great videos on the LD-49 I learned that I need another wire from the transformer (or elsewhere) to supply the continues power to the LD-49. Is there a way to supply the extra power without completely re-wiring the present wiring? Access from the transformer in the attic and its associated wiring is not easy and without damage to the interior of the living room wall. Hopefully you can offer me a solution.

@northsideservicecompany3567 2 месяца назад
Hi Christopher: Your newly accquired LD49 is a 4-Wire Chime, there's no work-around for that fact - Depending on how your original Chime was wired - you may already have the wiring needed inside your wall - It is very common for there to be 2-wires that were run from the Trasnformer to the Chime and another 2-wires that were run from the pushbutton to the Chime. Watch this Video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YmROyFjML4M.html To understand how 2-Note Chimes can be wired If you inside the howl in your wall - you may find the 4th Wire that you need is spliced into the other wires Chris

Thank you so much for this very detailed and informative tutorial. I have this exact same NuTone 8 Note Door chime. I recently purchased a Simplisafe Pro doorbell camera and attached it to this chime. Now when the Simplisafe doorbell button is pressed, the chimes ring continuously until I disconnect the Simplisafe camera/doorbell from it's base - then it stops ringing. I have searched for a solution to this problem and your video, although it is not addressing my particular problem is very detailed in explaining the electronics of this NuTone Chime. Question - any idea why this NuTone Chime rings continuously with the Simplisafe/Camera doorbell? Just Curious. Hi. Thank you for doing this video. We moved my mom’s 1988 Nutone chime with clock with us. When I hooked it up, the common wires sparked when I attached it to the com screw. Would you know why that would happen? The transformer in our new house is a 16 volts but only 10 amps. I will have to order the nut one 301-t. But now I’m afraid the spark may have fried the chime.
@northsideservicecompany3567
Hi Allie: There's not a lot of detailed information in your question, so I'll have to assume some of the basics. I going to guess that your original Chime was a standard 2-Note, ding-dong type of chime. I'm also going to assume that your mom's Chime is an 8-Note with either 4 long tubes or 3 short tube (since it has a COM connection. These are 2 very different types of Chimes and they have to be wired in a completely different way. Your original 2-Note Chime would have had only 2-wires connected to it (Trans & Front). Your mom's Chime is a 4-Wire Chime and is connected as I show in the Video you watched. If you simply connected the original 2-wires to the 1988 Chime (Com + some other screw) it may had created a short-circuit between the 2-wires (creating the spark). While I can say for certain, it is unlikely that it fried the Chime. The original wiring has to be sorted out to be able to make the correct connections - I can't really explain all of how to do that in a RU-vid comment - You will need to contact me directly for this type of help Finally, your original Transformer is 16 Volts AC rated at 10 Watts (VA) - (not 10 Amps ) What you will need is a 16 Volt AC Transformer rated at 30 Watts (VA) Chris nscompany@msn.com

Typical buttons that just complete the circuit are easy to understand as one wire goes to COM and the other to FRONT. When the button is pressed it completes a circuit and the chime does it's thing. However with a Ring doorbell, it too needs to be powered, and simply hooking it to COM and FRONT, won't power it (at least it isn't for me, others may have different results than I do). That is what I was getting at... How do you power this chime, a Ring video doorbell, and have the Ring unit be able to activate the chime. If it's even possible...

Try the following ~ using a short piece of wire, jumper between the "Common" and "Front" terminal on the Chime, if it rings the Chime is good, if not, the Chime is defective. ~ Remove the Front Pushbutton and disconnect the 2-wires, touch them together and see if the Chime rings (btw - the lighted buttons should not have LED's in them) - Chris

@@northsideservicecompany3567 Hi Chris: Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I tried your troubleshooting suggestions. The jumper sounded the chime. Crossing the switch wires did not. It turns out I had the transformer wire hooked to a chime terminal. I didn't think that was possible since I could get the back door to ring any of the chimes. Thank you for the great advise. Wife is happy!

@@edwardbrenner7654 The difference between the "Front" terminals and the "Side" & "Rear" Terminals is: The "Front" connection activates the Westminster timing circuit (all electronic) the "Rear" & "Side" connections are simple circuit - which allows power to be applied to the appropriate solenoid when the pushbutton is pressed. - Chris

Can you please elaborate on the use of the EXT Front connection? I have a Front, Rear, and Side door, all with pushbuttons. I have an 8 note chime in the main hallway. I also have a 2 note chime in a home office at the other end of the house. For some decades everything worked perfectly. I recently had a failure of the transformer, and have just gotten a replacement: 16VAC 30A. I replaced the transformer, but got no ring when I tried the side door. I haven't tried the other pushbuttons yet, as I need to first make sure there are no shorts or open wires. I left the transformer powered down until I can troubleshoot further. I'm curious to know how the 8 note and the 4 note chimes are supposed to be interconnected. Thank you.

Hi icemorons: The EXT. Front connection is used to activate a second Chime, which can be either a 8-Note or 2-Note Chime. To see how this is wired - Go to the Wiring Diagram on the Community Tab of our RU-vid Home Page - Here's a link to the diagram: ru-vid.com/show-UCcMN_sDzaDThDYRBb2Qcahwcommunity?lb=UgxvTh9HzD0dL89jV8J4AaABCQ Your 2nd question is interesting may offers clues as to why your Side Door Pushbutton isn't working. Transformers rarely fail suddenly all on their own. Transformers are almost always causalities of a failure in the device they are powering. It could be possible that you suddenly have a short in your Chime Wiring - it is also possible that either your 8-Note Chime has a problem or you may have a shorted or stuck pushbutton. Since you didn't test the Side Door or Front Door of your 8-Note Chime, we can't know if those are working correctly. The way your 8-Note Chime is designed, the Rear and Side Door connections are "wired" directly through their Pushbuttons - which means that when the button is pressed - it simply applies power to either of those solenoids. As a simply way to test the 8-Note Chime - connect the 16 volt power from the Transformer to the Chime - using a short jumper wire - jumper between the "Com" and "Front" terminals - the Chime should ring. Repeat this test for the "Rear" and "Side" connections - they should work also. If any of these do not work - your Chime has a problem. As for "wiring problems" - Any shorted wire in the system will likely drag down the voltage from the Transformer - Approaching this in a step-by-step method will be best: Connect the Transformer wires to the Chime - measure the voltage at the Chime - it should be between 16.8 - 18.9 volts AC - Then connect the wire for the "Front" connections - measure the voltage again, it should be the same as before. Then make the "Side" connections - measure the voltage - it should be the same as before - the make the "Rear" connections - measure the voltage, it should be the same. If at any time the voltage drop to near zero after making a new connection - there may be a short in those wires - Chris

If I had a doorbell like that, where would I be able to find the transformer??

Hi Zachary: Your Transformer could be anywhere - Most common places are: Garage, Circuit Breaker Panel, Furnace Closet, Water Heater Closet, Attic, Basement, Ceiling of a closet inside the house. Usually it will be fairly close to the Chime (ie. They wouldn't have put it 100' away and run the low-voltage wires that far) When trying to figure out what was done by someone before you - the Rule is "Installer are Lazy" whatever was the easiest way to do it - it probably how it was done - Chris

@@tonyhwang3888 Your Chime is a 16 volt Chime - The 24 volt transformer is wrong - too high of voltage - it will damage the Chime over time. The 40 VA is fine (but unnecessary) a 30 VA is a good choice - Chris

The bell has 5 screw label like this (on the board left side) = TERMINAL A , TERMINAL B , SIDE , REAR , FRONT , it has words these screw for use with 16VAC . and also 3 more screws next to the right side with the label like this = SIDE , REAR , FRONT it has words below show these 3 screws for use with 9 Volts battery. Please show me how to hook up the 16 Volts from the Transformer to them . thanks a lot Regards Jeff

Hi Jeff: Based on your description - you do not have a NuTone Chime. NuTone Chimes do not use labeling like "Terminal A" - "Terminal B" and so forth. I can't tell you how to connect up your Chime because I have no idea what it is - Chris
