This is such a forgiving recipe. I’ve made it 6 times so far (double batches) and perfect every time. I pour it onto cookie sheet and it sets really well . Highly highly recommend
@@Dee-ur1hk I have someone who gets canker sores from pecans and walnuts so I made my batches separate. I think a double batch would work alright if you had a pan that was roughly twice the size (so that the layers are about the same thickness here).
Made this yesterday. It’s amazing. And he is right. It’s WAY better then store bought. Sooooo worth the time and effort … 15 mins start to finish at home.
I have made toffee for 50 years. I take it out of the pan while still pliable, using the parchment tabs, place it on a flat surface and use a pizza cutter to make pretty squares and then let it cool. Took me 30 years to think of that! Gosh, the toffee gifts I gave are countless but always appreciated.
@@lagunagrl2687 A few seconds in the microwave or stove top will always work too. Its just easiest to top chips on hot toffee to melt. Last suggestion :-)
@@ttee6990 No, not yet.:( I might try it again today. This will be the fourth batch, but no success with the chocolate chips melting enough to spread. I just can’t figure out what I could be doing wrong. Probably best to just melt the chips and pour on top.
I sent my husband this video (as well as a 3 layer bar recipe of yours) last week, and oh boy! He had me buy a special pan from Amazon for them both. He's 72 (veterinarian still working) and loves to cook (we've been married 47yrs). Then he was looking through your videos and was exclaiming about so many of your recipes, I finally bought your hard bound cook book for him on Amazon! He is the best cook between us, and will be making many of your good recipes yippee! I have rarely seen him so interested in a cook on YT, I wanted you to know we are enjoying your videos and getting ready to cook many of them. Hoping you had a very merry Christmas, and will follow with a wonderful New Year! You've given us much JOY!!! :)
You remember the old jif peanut butter commercial where they spread a knife over the peanuts and it turns into peanut butter? That's what the chocolate chips reminded me of.
Western Australian here. May I just say thank you for putting things in grams and mls! It makes the recipe so much easier to follow for anyone outside of the USA! Will definitely be making this!
My brother in law makes toffee for the men at his Fire station and for us each Christmas. His toffee is always thin and easy to bite into because of an "Accident" at the firehouse. He unknowingly put the cookie sheet on the stove with a low fire going. When he poured the toffee and began to spread it, he noticed that it wasn't setting up Fast as normal. Then he feels the heat from the cookie sheet! Once it cooled it set up great. But, it was much thinner! Today, he places the cookie sheet in a low oven to preheat it -- Perfect Toffee Everytime! ♥️😋😋😋 Give it a try sometime! Thanks for your Wonderful Videos! You are Amazing! 😃👍♥️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🍀🍀🍀
Made this for my first time ever making toffee. It came out exactly like the one John did. This is a keeper. Everyone loved it, my husband most of all. Thank you so much!!
I want to thank you. Unknowingly I was cooking with cheap pots. I heard your advice today and I was preparing red Mexican rice which I never get right and I have to go buy at the store.. I thought of what you said and for the first time, I actually made perfectly red rice. You are right about investing in good pots
@Jamie Scott 💗So very true. John & Co and that includes the food of course is my go to therapy. I absolutely Love the Holidays. And this new ‘tradition’ has added a Wonderful new touch 🥰🎁 Sincerely J. The “extraterrestrials “ was added by looney hackers, UG.
Whenever I think of working with sugar, I picture hot lava in a ruined pan. But this worked out exactly the way you said, and I was so excited to try it. This, your chocolate fudge and also the peanut butter fudge made up my candy plate for the New Year's dinner. Everyone was quite impressed. Thank you for making me look so good!
I just watched 2 short videos for this recipe. They were only 2 ingredients. My third batch I made after watching this video and it is great. The first one along with the second got thrown away. Quicker isn’t always the best or easiest! I can’t thank you enough. This is for Christmas in a few days and I know now to always go to your videos first. Ty
Merry Christmas John. Love your channel! My wife and I made your toffee recipe tonight. We have been baking and making candy together for as long as we have been married (42 years) and we have never tried English Toffee. Well it turned out perfect. Just on thing we would change, a large pan so it isn't so thick. But it is so melt in your mouth. We appreciate you sharing it
I agree , it is a little too thick, so I use a cookie sheet to get the right thickness (a little on the thin side) for me. This English toffee is also sold as a "Heath Bar" in the stores, but I haven't seen it sold in years.
I made this recipe last night. It is super easy, tastes soooo good. I'll definitely be adding this to my cookie trays this Christmas!! Thank you so much!
I made this recipe for Christmas gifts this past year. Everyone said it was the best toffee they ever had. I’m no baker or even a dessert maker. It was the first toffee I’d made and it was a complete success. Totally recommend and a big thumbs up 👍
I failed at toffee years ago and haven't tried making this again until I saw your video and it turned out perfectly! You explain things so well! Thank you!
I literally just made toffee today for my mom for Christmas. It’s her favorite. I made mine in a 9x13 inch pan to have a thinner layer of toffee and used finely chopped almonds on top with milk chocolate chips. I want to make yours now! Yum! 💚❤️💚❤️
Oh man I could just watch you cook In that great kitchen all day long. But I must say I just finished making the best toffee ever. And it is. Your video is perfect , instructive and encouraging. I hope the toffee makes it to the Thanksgiving dessert tray. Can’t stop sampling.
Finding your recipe for toffee was a Godsend for me as I love toffee and this recipe is extremely easy, quick, and delicious. I think I will be giving out toffee to a few close friends this Christmas. They will be delighted. Thanks a million!!
Beautiful. Just wrote it in my book of stuff to do with caption underneath to say, excellent gift idea…gift all ingredients, really nice pot, wooden spoon, candy thermometer ❤. Stoked to make this! Thank you!
I make this every year around Christmas time. Although I’ve never added water and after so many years I don’t use a thermometer either. There is a certain “look” to the toffee that you just know when it’s done. I’ve also tried adding vanilla but have never had a noticeable taste difference without it. I also pour the toffee out on a pizza pan or cookie sheet just to let it spread in its own. My son has been helping me make these for years and make a great gift for neighbors and friends ! Love how simple it is 😊
Thank you! Made today for the first time. I’m on a very tight budget and used crackers ( just like breckel) but chopped coarsely. It came out lovely. The salt in the caramel is a must ❤🎉
What size cookie sheet? Or do you just use a big one like a half sheet covered with parchment and pour it on in one spot and just let it spread on its own?
Wow I just made this.. Was going to bring it to work to share but I'm almost tempted to keep it all to myself. So delicious and easy to make! Thanks for sharing.
I have made this three times over the holiday as candy gifts! I also made your pumpkin pie which was delicious!! (no soggy bottom) ;) This recipe is so classy, delicious, and perfect. Your instructions are super easy to follow and things happen the way you say they will. 👏I feel successful! Every time I make one of your recipes I grow in confidence because I know my culinary quest will be successful, sophisticated and deeply yummy.😍You make me love preparing food and yes, I already have your preppy kitchen cookbook! Stunning, stunning stunning!!! please keep teaching how to make food with the love, care, respect and artistry the craft deserves. cooking with you makes life better! Thank you! Kimberly❤️👏
I love and follow both of you for all your recipes! I make your cranberry pistachio shortbread cookies for the holidays (actually all year around) and they are an absolute family favorite!! ❤️
I cooked a batch to 285° (soft crack) today for Christmas treats. I have made a batch before that were closer to hard crack and I honestly like both stages for toffee!
Thankyou for this easy yet super tasty recipe. This video appeared in my feed for some random reason, and I’m so happy it did! I made it today with my daughter and it’s sooooooo good! I will be adding this to my Christmas recipe file to make every year!
Family favorite! I used to watch my neighbors make this, (yep. I was one of 'the neighbor's kids') They gave me the recipe so I started making it everyone I know LOVES it. The only difference is that there's no water in the recipe. So easy and so unbelievably good.(You had me at"buttery islands floating..." )🤗 Thanks for this excellent recipe.
My family loves toffee, we make it in a half sheet pan!🤗 I’ve never added pecans to the pan before it was cooked, so I’ll have to try that. I also put chocolate and nuts on both sides, while my daughter in law puts chocolate on just one. I haven’t made candy of any kind in years but I’m so motivated this year! Thanks in part to all of your fabulous videos!
My favorite! And it's so cheap to make when buy it made it store it's a pretty penny! Thank you so much this is perfect for the holidays and I will be making it tomorrow!
Omg!! I am so glad I found your version. I tried 6 other batches using versions from two other sources and all of them failed! I am a descent baker so it was killing me that I couldn’t get it. So the next morning I tried yours and it looked like it was perfect. I let it set up while I was at work and I cut it up when I got home. PERFECTION!! It is perfect and delicious! Thank you thank you!!!
I made these to give as gifts for Christmas. They were amazing! I did not have a candy thermometer, but I watched how his looked when he pulled it. Texture was perfect. Can’t wait to make another batch. 💜😎🇺🇸
I make this toffee every Christmas to give away as gifts, but I didn't know about that chocolate melting shortcut. I'll try that technique this week when I make it. Thankyou... from Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺
I really appreciate that you weigh your ingredients & cook from scratch - no packets of this & that that we can't source. This means that we can make your recipes in Australia without any problems. Thank you.
I'm looking at this at 12am and my mouth is literally watering. Omg!! This looks so bomb. Definitely trying this recipe out soon. Thanks so much. I love all your recipes. (Made your sugar cookie recipe and the royal icing with the corn syrup recipe recently and everyone loved it so much🤗) You're amazing I appreciate this channel so much.
Love the trick of spreading the chocolate chips on the warm toffee! It saves a full step! Loving the cookbook too! Oh those Orange Pecan Cinnamon Rolls!❤
Oh my goodness! What an easy recipe with great visual instructions! It turned out perfect. Can't wait to make it again. Never thought that I could make this. THANK YOU!
This is such an easy recipe. Thank you so much. I love English toffee and this is delicious. I have made two batches for Christmas gifts. I think they will go over well.
Does the toffee keep well? I plan to make some today for Christmas/New Year gifts. I normally pack treats in sealed bags. Does it stick together after a few days ? Many thanks for any input
@@oonagh2811 i have mine stored in a tin can and it seems fine. It doesn’t stick together at all. I would think that as long as the candy has cooled and you have it broken into pieces, it should be fine in a tightly wrapped plastic bag. Give it a try with a few pieces. But for sure, it doesn’t stick together in my Christmas cookie tins.
Made a double batch of this. It's cooling right now. Smearing the chocolate with the spatula is the closest thing to free therapy I've found. Can't wait for it to cool/harden so I can dig in! Thanks, John!
Wow, just made this recipe and it came out exactly as you described it - so easy and so beautiful. The chocolate has incredible shine. Thank you, thank you!!!!
I used to have the news on in the morning as i get ready for work, now that ive discovered your channel, its been 2 weeks of you first thing in the morning, brightening up my day! Love this recipe... thanks for giving metric measurements! Much appreciated from Canada!
Just made this recipe. OMG 🤯 this was amazing. It tastes better than a Heath bar and so fresh. I highly recommend for anyone to try. It is so easy and delicious 😋 😍
Oh my goodness! How can something that looks so yummy be so easy! Can't wait to make this! I wonder if it will knock your peanut butter bars off the #1 spot on my favorite sweet treats list. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.
I made this to the letter and it was absolutely ORAL-GASMIC! Tastes like a really good Skor chocolate bar with toasted pecans. Could have devoured the whole pan in one sitting!
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful candy. It is my absolute favorite kind. You explained that so well that I who have 2 TBIs could actually feel comfortable with trying it out and hopefully it will work for me. Thank you again 💓 💖 💗
This toffee recipe is simple and works better than all of the previous recipes I tried. I'm not a chef, baker, or candymaker, but I was able to achieve delicious toffee repeatedly and it didn't require me to use a bunch of condensed milk or piles of other ingredients. It is a test of endurance for me though, both times I took about an hour in the kitchen watching the toffee and stirring. But I just pulled up a chair and the end result was worth the effort. I also really like that this recipe doesn't require melting any chocolate.
There are some people that you can tell instantly that they are wonderful nice beautiful human beings and this guy is one of those people. I bet he makes everyone around him happier.
Note for those cooking at high altitude the temperature is different every 500ft drops 1 degree. So it’s more important for those above 3000ft where it drops by 6 degrees. I’m at 7500 so I was scorching my toffee and hard candy last year till I figured out about the different ranges at higher altitude. Cooking at too high a temp can change the texture.
Fabulous! You make it look so easy and I thank you for that. Growing up making old fashioned fudge and other candies my mother taught me how to use a cool cup of water too test my candy. I have now moved on to cand thermometer. It's so important too make sure your boil is at the right stage. Going too make your toffee today. Wish me luck. Thank you for video!!
hello from australia. I love your christmas chocolate sugar cookie recipe but my god was it a pain to make because australia has a bloody hot christmas so it was impossible to get the cooke shapes out without them shapeshifting after a minute out of the fridge haha. eventually it worked out and i dipped them in white chocolate and crushed candy cane and they made the perfect chrissy present!
You are absolutely the best!!!! I love how you talk us through a recipe with such a calming and fun voice!! Thank you for sharing your recipes. YOU ARE GREAT
Made this today! It came out perfect - followed the instructions to a T. The texture is awesome. The toasted pecans really do add a lot to the recipe. I think I have a new 'must make' item for my Christmas treat list! 😋❤️👍 Y'all gotta try this! YUM!!!!
I love all your recipes!!! Just made this one again today. What made it even easier was that I used my Infrared Thermometer to monitor the temp. Nothing to clean up when we are done. Thanks again for all your super fun recipes!!!
The flippin' best!! Use the right pan and it WORKS!! LOL! Tried another recipe and it turned out, but there was something missing from flavor. THIS....in the right pan; which I didn't use on the first go...is SUPER DELICIOUS! Thank you!!
I don't know why he kept calling it caramel when it's toffee. Caramel isn't cooked as long and it's supposed to be chewy. He made toffee but his was way too thick compared to normal toffee, you have to have a really good set of chompers to eat that thick toffee. Caramel can be really easy, there are recipes that don't require a thermometer and it comes out perfectly every time.
I just made this for the first time after I was spending $8.50 for a small box of locally made toffee for my mother in law. She loves this just as much and it was fun and simple to make. I put the toasted chopped pecans on top of the melted chocolate, not on bottom, and also added a small amount of toasted coconut along with the nuts and small amount of Maldon fleur de sel. Yummy!
I made this today and I wasn’t expecting it to take so long to get to 300 degrees. It was almost 20 minutes and you really can’t go off and do anything else. So be prepared to stand over the stove for awhile. It was worth it though. Delicious.
