Lee.. I am a RU-vid junkie and have completed hundreds of projects after having watched thousands if not tens of thousands of videos posted by numerous RU-vidrs but I have never, ever seen anything like what you have offered here. You are an amazingly organized soul and your willingness to share that is incredibly generous!! You deserve a standing ovation. I went looking for a simple video and walked away with the Encyclopedia Brittanica of Wind Chimes, you are a master craftsman and I truly appreciate your art. Take care Jeff

Jeff, Thank you for the kind comments. I guess you could say this is just the way my brain works. We're all wired differently and I need to do things in a logical fashion. Besides that, this keeps an engineer off the street. 😊 Best of success with your chime project. Lee

Lee can we make these with ceramics? I can make clay tubes and construct as you specify. Thank you for sharing the information!
@LelandHiteK8CLI
@LelandHiteK8CLI 7 лет назад
Well . . . you're the second person to ask that question and unfortunately, I do not have a good answer. I looked at the two variables, elasticity and density for ceramics, and they are all over the map depending on the specific formula for mixing. So there is no way I can calculate a predicted value for resonance. However, what you might try is to make a tube with a specific wall thickness then support it at the 22.4% (.224) location from one end. Then using an app on an ipad or phone, measure the resonate frequency. From there you can ratio other frequencies to determine their length. See the ratio calculator tab in the regular calculator. Then make the other tubes with the same wall thickness. This won't be exact but might get you ion the ballpark. leehite.org/chime_sofware/DIY_Wind_Chime_Tube_Calculator_A=440.zip

@LeeHiteVideo Год назад
Use this link to download the calculator leehite.org/chime_sofware/DIY_Inches_Wind_Chime_Tube_Calculator_A=440.zip Then enter the ID and OD and the type of metal. That's all you need to do. All the notes are calculated and you can select between English or Metric for the chime length and the hang point. Let me know if this works for you.

hi Lee, Im looking to make a chime that plays a specific series of notes... if I cut them to size according to your chart, will they actually sound like those notes as if you played it on a piano?
@LeeHiteVideo
@LeeHiteVideo 7 лет назад
If the notes are above about C5 then they will track the piano notes very closely. However, the further below C5 the more the notes will depart from the piano because the lower frequencies will be missing from the sound. It's not bad but for a musical setting, it is typically not acceptable. Hope this helps . . .

I was going to refurbish (for sentimental reasons) a set of copper chimes my late father made. They sounded good but were primitive to be sure. Now, after watching your video, and appreciating all the technical engineering you contributed to it, I've decided to adapt his materials and upgrade the design following your plans and suggestions. A most fitting way to honor my Dad on this Memorial Day; he was a two-year combat vet of WWII. Bless them all!

Love the detail. For center hung chimes, I use the wire part from paper binder clips (you get two from each clip and they come in different sizes). Tie the support string to it, squeeze together and push into the pipe. push it down and rotate until the ends pop into the two drilled holes. It's nice because if for some reason you need to re-hang the chime, the ends just push back in and you can remove and redo it.

I can tell by your tools in the background that you know what you’re doing, but do you know the difference between schedule 40 and schedule 80 pipe? I would do another test with schedule 40 and schedule 80 galvanized steel, I’m guessing the 80 will sound much deeper and the tone will last longer. I saw another gentleman’s video with Corinthian bells, the bells are 1.75 ID. I was thinking about using 1.75 I.D. schedule 80 galvanize steel to make a wind chime, what do you think, sir? Thanks for the video. You did a great job.

I didn’t make it very far before the first issue. I will be making a 44” copper tube type L 1.5” diameter in the scale of C. I see you have listed the notes for the Corinthian in C @ C,D,E,G,A and C. Using your diy calculator for my given tube size it shows if I started at C3 the tube length would be 45 3/4” do I then go down to D in the same octave meaning D would be a length of 43 3/16”? Would that mean the last C in the scale would be a C4?

Al , Thanks for the message. Yes, I completely agree and hesitated a long time before I decided to include that section. My reason may be faulty but I finally concluded that because I push very gently on the side of the wheel it would be safe. But, of course, one never knows because those wheels are not designed to take a side force. Anyone reading this post PLEASE be very careful when using the side of the wheel. Press very lightly at the most!!! Thanks again for the reminder.

Hi Lee... i made a chime over this past weekend and I used one of your diagrams..i cut the pipes the wood drilled the holes to your specs..but for some reason it does not want to chime the wind was blowing pretty good over the weekend but the wind catcher didn't seem to catch the wind.. what can be wrong

Lee, I have (2) 10 foot lengths of 1.25" EMT. I'd like to create a sound that resonates at very low level. Would you please offer a recommendation that would incorporate the material that I have on hand. I'm not necessarily restricted to just these 2 pieces. I could always go to the box store and pick up more. I'm also not adverse to returning these pipes and going with a larger diameter if that would make a difference in yielding these deep tones. Thanks. Richard

Your attention to all things that make a chime function and sound beautifully is admirable.

Can you measure wind speed from a wind chime? (one chime chimes at 10mph, another at 20mph approx)
