Sweet caramelized homemade unagi sauce drizzled over perfectly grilled unagi and steamed rice, this Unadon (Eel Rice) will make any Japanese food enthusiasts mouth water.

INGREDIENTS
2 unagi (eel) fillets (1 fillet is roughly 5.6 oz/160 g; defrosted)
Japanese sansho pepper (for toppings; optional)
Unagi Sauce for 2 Fillets
¼ cup soy sauce (Use GF soy sauce for gluten-free)
¼ cup mirin
2 ½ Tbsp sugar
1 ½ Tbsp sake
Unagi Sauce (extra can be kept for 3 months)

When I want to try this recipe the fish shop near my home is running out of unagis. As subtitute I use eggplant and filleted nila fish. Eventhough with some hardwork (fighting with my cat because he want my share of the fish eventhough he just eat his) the taste made it worth the grueling battle. Thank you for the recipe! It is simpler than the others but still delicious, the taste is light but still goes well with rice. Love from indonesia 🇮🇩

I’m from Australia and this is my favourite Japanese dish that I have tried so far! Eel isn’t very popular here but I love the taste, and the crunch of the fine bones! Thank you for this recipe~!

When I lived and worked in Tokyo this was my favourite recipe...and I loved PLENTY of recipes there. I am now back in London where Eels used to be VERY common and cheap when I was young. Now Eels are a delicacy, but I still buy them from time to time. Now I know just how easy it is to prepare the sauce I shall enjoy it once again by making Unagi at home. Domo arigato gozaimasu !!

We don’t have many things like this where I live and I finally found this sauce in Walmart and I was like oh I wanna try that (btw this sauce works really well on those cabbage pancakes as well from Japan) and I instantly fell in love with it! After it’s done I put it on rice and add sriracha and Japanese mayo on top and mix it all together 💕

A chef taught me to remove the skin and using a spoon gently scrape the fat off the eel, considerable amount, improve the flavor for pre cooked eel. Also I lightly torch the eel before serving.

You will need mirin and sake, but you can remove the herb (it's called Kinome, but super rare to find this traditional Japanese herb). :) Hope you enjoy!

They have the eel in my hometown, but when they took me to the product, they were ALIVE. I'll try to find the recipe but I'm a little freaked out

Perhaps if you don’t have eel then replacing that with a brown trout will taste just as good too. Essentially, it’s just unagi sauce drizzled over brown trout fish and steamed rice.

It’s called Kinome, it’s sansho tree’s leaf. Yes for proper broiling so inside will be cooked through.

The eel is pre-grilled. You just thaw and heat it under the broiler. This is how it’s normally purchased. You’ll find it at most Asian markets. It’s fairly expensive. You can carefully wipe or wash off the sauce it comes with and use your own homemade eel sauce (recommended), or leave it on if you wish. I usually just wipe it off.

Tried this with some unagi from the market and it turned out a little too soft textured and gelatinous for my liking. Though I imagine some people might like it that way. Not sure if I bought too cheap eel or I’m expecting fresh roasted eel texture that I just won’t get with pre-roasted. Feedback is appreciated! Btw don’t buy the eel with corn syrup in the sauce, tasted to much like a marshmallow lol.

Steaming the eel after grilling is part of the japanese recipe to render out the fat so you don’t get that gelatinous texture. Then regrill on high heat to get the crunch/caramelization. I hope this helps

Looked delicious! However, I thought that you going to show us how to prepare Eel Rice from the scratch! The one you used you can buy the eel package from most the Japanese supermarkets though! Just open up, heat up, make some sauce, then serve! Quiet EASY! 🙄😋

Oh! Japanese home cooks never prepare the eels from fresh/raw... We always purchase already charcoal broiled unagi from the supermarket (or eat at Unagi specialty restaurant). You need a special knife and skill to prepare the fillet. :)

There is never enough sauce on those premade ones. This video helped me understand and how to make extra sauce. We spread the sauce on the eel and on the rice. I recently went to H Mart and found some raw uncooked eels from Korea. Gonna give that a go with this sauce even though it does come with a sauce package.

Because the sauce they use when they cook it doesn’t taste as good as homemade. I wash it off before broiling.

We can’t get fresh eels in Japan and home cooks always get charcoal grilled cooked unagi from supermarkets and shops. Chefs at unagi restaurant need a special tool and skill to prepare eels. 😃
