I made my own vanilla and made some for Christmas gifts. I used those little bottles that have apple juice in them. So cute and everyone loved their present. I used some cheap rum and it was really good. You can reuse the vanilla beans just top off with more rum.
Rain, great video! I have been making Vanilla for many years! I learned it from the great community of older You Tube videos! As far as the brake bleeder for sealing jars, that has been taught, also, from the other community years ago. My daughter's illness has become worse this past year, so, I don't use Vanilla as often as I did. I have several pints aging for a few years now.
I haven't made my own vanilla yet so I want to try. Moringa I have been taking for a couple years now I've tried the powder in different liquids and my oh my some days that was really rough when I ran out of capsules and so I usually make my capsules it's just easier for me to grab that and take them I take four to five a day of the 00 size. It sure has made a difference for me. I really appreciate everything you teach and do my daughter is now watching as well and so we do many projects together or she does them on her own and I get to enjoy it. I have to tell you we bought the brake bleeder because my vacuum seal broke and I wanted to seal my jars and I thought why not have the break bleeder on hand to because it doesn't require electricity. I had my vacuum sealer and my dehydrator break the same week. I tried to use a used dehydrator we got a deal on some limes it burned him so I'm praying that the Lord will provide me somehow what the new dehydrator. I just now have to learn how to do medicinal things
Making my first vanilla extract and so excited! I got a bottle of Kirkland vodka and some Vanilla beans at Costco, we're the cheapest beans I could find. Since Costco merchandise can be a little unpredictable, I'm debating stocking up now or just buying a pack or two of 5 beans when I am there. Mmmmm.... vanilla....
Costco has vanilla beans now? That is great, we do not have a membership anymore because we cannot afford driving the distance monthly to make it worth it but I do have my kids pick us up things as needed when they happen to get in there. I will have to ask them to check that out next time they are there, and yes, stocking up is a great idea because as you said, it is so unpredictable as to how long they will stock such things
Can you recommend a specific moringa powder? I will use it in my smoothies. Due to my traumatic brain injury, flavor isn't an issue. I have very little sense of taste, smell and no hunger sensations. I only eat nutrient rich plant based foods, so your mention of moringa got me searching it's health benefits and I'm surprised I've not heard of it before now. Thank you again for all your wisdom and for passing it on.
This is what I buy because of price and quality I think it is a great value - plus you can save another 15% by getting it on subscribe and save: amzn.to/2C7tzJP
I love your channel, I watch it almost every day. I have a question about sugar syrup‘s because they have no alcohol in them. I make liqueurs and edible flower sugar syrups which is used like honey. I put mine in a tall bottle with a screw cap. I tried putting them in the refrigerator and they crystallized. So now I just make the syrup and leave them on the counter. My question is do I need to seal them in someway? I don’t know how to seal the screw cap bottle? The bottle does have an insert in it, a little white disc. Thanks for any help you can give me, Cyndi
Where do you get your of vanilla bean? Just a single one of does of vanilla bean cost me $14.00 in Walmart. also, what's the name of that food saver vacuum you are using to pomp the air out the jars? You don't have a link for that one.
This video is quite old, when I was buying it back then I could get 1/4 lb for $30 which is at least 25 beans. The price quadrupled since but has been slowly coming back down. Still not as low as it was when I originally stocked up
I’m about to embark on the vanilla extract journey. Do you like how the half and half turned out? I’m like you don’t want to use alcohol if I can help it… spiced rum and glycerine on hand… how did it fair??
O yes, it is great though now I use honey instead of glycerin and make a perpetual extract in a large large that I refill my smaller bottles from then top off again with a mixture of spiced rum and raw honey. It is excellent!
@@RainCountryHomestead I made the glycerine and spiced rum already :( could that be perpetual ?? I have heaps of raw local honey 😭 and no vanilla pods left - back online to buy some more then… :/
another great video. where do you get you vanilla beans? I saw 1 brands at Walmart for $5 and I thought oh wow. is there a cheaper way to get the beans? that's really what's keeping me from making it. I, too don't drink so thank you on that input.
I have bought them both from Amazon and eBay. It can be hard to find the organic ones for a good price, they are spendy. But, they do go a long way. When you price organic vanilla extract, you pay a lot more for that. However, my extract is not 100% organic because I am sure the vodka is not and doubt the rum is either.
Oh my goodness! You my friend are a frugal genius!!!!! Thank you for showing the whole process. I'd have asked if you should open the beans if you hadn't shown it. LOL I'm soooo gonna do this! I never see fresh organic vanilla beans at Kroger so I'll check at Whole Foods. I'm sure they have them. I love, love, love my break bleeder and vacuum lids too. Thanks for sharing this and all you do. God Bless!!
There are some places on Amazon that sell them at reasonable prices. I would have to go back and look to see where I have been ordering them from. It has been awhile since I have had to order.
Yes, I have bought some from amazon and some from eBay. Just depends one which place I could find the best deal on the organic ones in bulk. They are rather expensive.
Lisa Booker, you are welcome! Oh my goodness! I went back and looked at my past orders from Amazon. The prices of these vanilla beans are through the roof! I bought two different weights from two different companies and the prices are nuts on both of them at this time. Wow! Just look around, Lisa!!
I agree with pp. I love your videos ☺. So Im 50 and have very little experience in the kitchen with preparing good healthy recipes and am learning alot! Love those vanilla jars, what are they so I can look them up?
I forgot to add that the reason I have not monetized is that at this point, something keeps holding me back. Every time I start to seriously consider it, I get a check in my spirit and then a confirmation that the time is not right. Happened yet again today after I read Palmetto's comment then saw MeeMaw's newest video. Besides showing others how we do things here and teaching people a more frugal self sufficient lifestyle, I also see my channel as an outreach and ministry to other ladies. It just seems wrong for me to monetize. I know others do and I have no problem with it, but for me, the timing is not right and I will keep waiting on the Lord for His guidance in this :)
Heidi, I do not drink either, and really not too fond of the smell of alcohol but I know all vanilla ext. has some in it, but I have become a fan of Vanilla Bean Paste. Do you know how that is made.
Yes, most vanilla extract has alcohol but I had done some looking and read in several places that food grade glycerin can be used. Extracts can also be made with vinegar so I use homemade vinegar for medicinal extracts rather than alcohol. Of course the vinegar isn't a good choice for vanilla! haha! I have never tried vanilla bean paste but sounds wonderful
Rain, it is so delicious and has a way better taste, you can eat it right out of the jar I get mine from or off of Amazon. Pure Organic Vanilla bean paste. You might try it, please if you do, if ya can and I do think you can, make a video of how to make it, By the way, where did you get all those vanilla bean pods, those things are so expensive. The paste I use has the seeds all swarmed in the paste. Eww it is so good
I generally use 1/4 80 proof rye whiskey, and 3/4 188 proof pure grain alcohol, but I have used that rum too. It gives a nice flavor too... Haven't tried Glycerine yet...
You may want to check out my more recent extract videos as well since these are old but when it comes to the vanilla, this is my favorite way but for all other extracts, I use homemade wine instead of rum or vodka and my newest way involves using honey with that instead of glycerin but I have to go about 3/4 wine to 1/4 honey.
I bought a lot of them from amazon but all the ones I was getting are no longer available. These ones have the best price there that I can find: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LIK1AL8/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=rainco-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01LIK1AL8&linkId=56306d0db6dd9a03b1fc789760a7b401 You can also check out eBay, I have bought some there before as well
Hello there 🙋🏽♀️ How did your vegetable glycerin mix with your alcohol vanilla extract come , I know it’s has to wonderful because it’s pure, I went looking for my old bottle of vanilla extract and I found it wayback in my cabinet , it’s was the brand Watkins I purchased this before I start making my own, and I need to wait a few more weeks before I was able to use mine which now and they’re ready ! and I’m able to enjoy them immensely , Anyway this old bottle was still in my cabinet some months ago , since mines had a few weeks to go I went looking For that old bottle of vanilla extract , I realize it was much thicker than the other vanilla extract brands so I read the ingredient there’s it was made with glycerin and alcohol in it, I know yours is good, Not all extracts have glycerin in it , but I noticed that because Watkins Is thicker and Then some of the other vanilla extract brands so common sense I knew it had to be some vegetable glycerin in it, it really taste good but ! I prefer making it myself, But I had it in my cabinet and I wanted to use it because I bought it so long ago I was not going to waste it, now and of course all of mine’s are ready, and I make a lot of Fruit ones too , like coconut 🥥, black walnut, grapefruit, lemon 🍋 , almond, Orange 🍊 but I haven’t tried chocolate 🍫 or coffee ☕️ yet , I also have some brewing for two years, because I was told it’s even better when you let them brew for two years, but the ones that I’m using now I will let them sit for eight months, and I’ll keep those going because I have 10 vanilla beings and some of the other jars that I made so those are continuous vanilla extract. Now I’m starting the vanilla mix with the vegetable glycerin and 90 proof vodka but it won’t be ready for eight months that’s how long I want mines to brewed, So I know yours came out great. 👏🏽👩🏾🦲😘🙋🏽♀️
It turned out great but this is a very old video. I still keep experimenting and in this newest video I talk about and show my new favorite solvent as well as other ways to make extracts: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AlC4hUebO-Y.html
@@RainCountryHomestead yes I already noticed it was four years old that’s way I ask about it , I Purchase that hand pump vacuum you were using , I hope it works , I have the hand food saver vacuum, it’s does hard to order Another one it’s only $20.00 Plus tax that more the merrier 🤣😂 it’s still available after 4 year’s . I’ll be checking out 5 Month ago video too , right after I finish this comment.🤣😂😅 You’re a nice kind person.😘😍👩🏾🦲
Oh my gosh....LOL...I just love you, Heidi! I was talking to you in my head and said try half alcohol and half glycerin. And what do you kow? You heard me 6 years ago..hahahaha.
I know this video is a bit older, but how did the half rum and glycerin work? I also read some place to use 3:1 water:glycerin. Have you done that with the vanilla or any other products for extracts?
I did eventually do an update and it turned out amazing. I have a couple of newer extract videos and though I have yet to try the 3:1 glycerin water, I have done 1:1 with my homemade wine and glycerin to make a peppermint extract and it turned out great. The wine is both cheaper and healthier and non gmo. Here is one of my other extract videos but I believe I did them all the same in this one and they all turned out great, though the almond did not taste like almond. Apparently you need to use a different type of seed to make that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bn5hbPcTfs8.html
I was getting Frontier brand but now they are hard to find, most beans have quadrupled in price since I stocked up on them years ago. The place to find them for the best price is on eBay
I had heard it was from bee die off so now vanilla has to be hand pollinated. I have also heard something different so I am not sure if it is a combination of things or what the real facts are. I am sure just regular inflation plays a part in that but the price increase is pretty substantial for the time period. I also wonder if demand for real vanilla has increased as people try to get away from the imitation that was popular for so long
I tried to make vanilla extract several months ago. I used vodka. It's still not ready. I even used the same jars as you. I think I messed up because I put it in the fridge.
The cold may have slowed down the process but there really is not need to refrigerate it as the alcohol will keep it preserved indefinitely. I just suggest removing it and storing in a dark place and waiting a couple more months. 8 weeks is usually the minimum but I always figure the longer the better
I noted that Mary of Mary's nest (you referenced her so I visited her channel) has a wait time of 6-7 months. Is your extract the same at 2-3 months? She says hers is perpetual, and it would seem your recipe would be, also. I have been using that brake bleeder, it's like magic! What fun. PS I had to log back in to Google and for some reason I ended up with a different login on You Tube. I have no idea about these things sometimes, =)
I always say at least 2 months but since I always have some going in various kinds, they can sit for at least a year, the longer the better! I also no longer use vodka but homemade wine instead. With the vanilla though, I still find it has the best flavor when at least a portion of it is spiced rum and now instead of glycerin, I am using raw honey in the mix
@@RainCountryHomestead Thank you, I"m happy to learn that-it seems like 6 or 7 months would be good, but to be able to use some in 2 is wonderful. I found Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum on sale, I know exactly where to find the raw honey so I"m on it. My husband just goes along with me at me at this point =)
i bought the moringa and have been using it in my water, lemon juice, and ACV, honey mixture....but wow, it doesn't like to mix and its not pretty to look at...getting some gel caps...ok, glad its not just me with the light vanilla!! I love the small bottles!! I just use a mason jar and when I think of it I shake it up when I am in the pantry...wonder if you could use a bit of both the alchohol and the glycerin?
Interesting, well, I wouldn't use vodka for cleaning, seems a bit pricey for that, haha. However, it may be an idea to experiment with in the future and make a video of my thoughts :) Thanks for the input!
You really have to hunt, especially now, I am glad I stocked up on a bunch before the price hike. That is why I did not link to any because the ones I bought before from Amazon, are now twice as much. I have found some on eBay before for a decent price but not sure they are still available.
Was wondering what kind of capsules you get,and where you get them, and do they hold a teaspoon.Like you the moringa powder taste is very hard to get use to.I really think I would do better in capsule form.thanx
These are the ones I use (and thanks for reminding me to add the link to the description box): www.amazon.com/Empty-Gelatin-Capsules-1000-Wholesale/dp/B00IK1XPTE/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1475775759&sr=8-2&keywords=non+gmo+gel+capsules+empty I have yet to measure out how much they hold, I need to do that. I do know they come in a bigger size and a smaller size.
I think I put the link in the description box but you can check out specialtybottles.com. They have all shapes, sizes, types, and colors. If you are doing to do a decent sized order, they have the best price I have seen on such things
The bean or the seeds? I have bought my organic beans at both Amazon and eBay but they have gone up a lot since I purchased them awhile back. Looking at the prices now, eBay currently has the best price for them but you have to keep shopping around.
Yes, I know this, this is a very old video but I also like to experiment and have made many great extracts using multiple different solvents or blends. My current favorite is three parts homemade wine and one part honey. For the vanilla though, I prefer Spiced Rum mixed with honey
I haven’t made vanilla extract yet. I have used glycerin for herbal tinctures. I’ve had best results when I had one on/in (double boiler on super low or oven, respectively) a steady low heat source. I believe a low heat helps properties transfer better.
I actually do not use glycerin for any extracts anymore and never heat, though I can see this being fine with vanilla, I would not use heat for medicinal herbal extracts: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-c06SSMxSMMk.html
I made some vanilla about five years ago, the beans are still in the used bottles but haven’t had liquid on them in three years will they still work to make more vanilla?🙂
We go through so much vanilla that now I just pop the pour cap off of the vodka and load in the beans. lol When that gallon of vanilla is about 3/4 of the way gone, I buy another bottle and start the process again.
I do actually have a one liter bottle I keep forgetting about and it has been steeping probably a year now! I need to just start using jars so I can free up some of the smaller bottles for other tinctures and extracts!
I would say three for each small bottle but I do it different now. I make a large jar and put in a lot of beans (maybe about 20), I really do not remember how many I put in but the thing is that it is a perceptual extract so when I take out some of the extract to fill a smaller bottle for the kitchen, I add more solvent but not more beans. I have had this going for going on two years now
Not a bad idea, not too worried about it though since I stay way ahead on such things - I am sure I have enough vanilla made up to last at least a year
I bought quite a few of the Costco pure vanilla extract for long term storage but now I wonder about storage time in the original plastic bottles. Any suggestions on how best to rebottle the liquid so it's safe and will last?
I would not know about long term storage in those bottles, but may be a good idea to rebottle into swing top bottles like I use here. *8.5 oz swing top bottles: amzn.to/2oeDoAs *1 liter swing top bottles: amzn.to/2nPj8Ey
Thank you for the videos and sharing the links on everything im ordering all kinds of things today :) Love Glass Bottles thank you and there a good price :)
I saw that vacuum seal idea and was thinking it would be better than the foodsaver to do powdery things. With the foodsaver it will draw it back into the motor. I'm Gina have to get one.
The reason I did not link to them in the description box is because neither of the sources I had been using were available. However, I will look again but just know, prices of vanilla beans of gone up considerably since I stocked up on mine.
Here is the best price I can find but they are not organic: amzn.to/2zVHtQ4 I am not certain how important organic labeling is when it comes to vanilla beans, this is something I will need to look into. This is the price I used to pay for this much of the organic ones from Frontier but now you cannot find them other than buying a couple at a time for $20. The double and tripling of the price since I ordered mine is a result of crop failures. I am hoping this year will look better for the vanilla bean so the prices will go back down and I will be stocking up on more
You must of read my mind.. I said to my mind why don't you mix the Glycerin and the vodka then add the Vanilla beans. I suppose smart minds think alike... Ninette Bird- The Caribbean Wife.
Why would you add glycerin to vanilla? Have used that brand glycerin for my homemade soaps. But our vanilla, almond, citrus extracts are nothing more than those items and a high quality brandy or rum like the French make.
I have been using vodka for years but was looking for a non-alcoholic way to make it. Mostly experimenting. Glycerin is just another way to make an extract and I had wanted to try it. Since the glycerin only seems to take much longer, I am trying the next batch with a blend of the rum and glycerin
Rain Country Homestead Keeping kosher we found that cognac/brandy and Bacardi rum work best for us since they carry the OU label. Had been using the NOW Solutions vegetable glycerine but didn't see a kosher symbol for use in food;. I have a number of their essential oils.
Beth, I put a link to another glycerin that has a better price and is labeled non-GMO and kosher. The only reason I even put the NOW link is because it was the one I used here because I could not remember where I put the other one I had bought. Of course, I found it AFTER I made the video! haha
I just got some glycerin and am going to be making some extracts for a lady who uses them for cupcakes that allot of different people eat so no alcohol lol
