Liquid tiramisu? The Vietnamese have been enjoying it for ages! It's called Vietnamese Egg Cream Coffee (Cà Phê Trứng). We'll show you how to make this rich, decadent treat that's both easy and amazingly delicious. We use a Vietnamese coffee filter in the video, but you can also use any strong coffee or espresso.
Eggs in coffee is almost unheard of in the western world. When I first heard about it, I instantly pictured an omelette-flavored franken-beverage. Boy, was I wrong. This recipe is AMAZING.
Vietnamese Egg Coffee is extremely thick, sweet, foamy, and rich. Each sweet sip envelops the tongue - almost like it's swimming in a thick, frothy bath of liquid tiramisu or coffee-flavored eggnog (without the eggnog 'wang'). The separate layers of dark, bitter coffee and sweet cream contrast each other beautifully, and play a back-and-forth dance on your tastebuds as you drink it.

As a vietnamese person. Back to the old days we were too poor to buy milk so we had to use egg to replace. That's the main reason this kind of drink was made

for everyone out there: you can do this with hot chocolate and it's awesome too. and I think - in Vietnam, they dont put the coffee in hot water to cook the egg, its just to keep the coffee warm, because here in Vietnam winter we dont have heaters (the drink is supposed to be a winter drink as it's hot), so the coffee could cool off really fast. And me --personally, I prefer drinking it without stiring/mixing the egg with coffee - I think many people here in Vietnam also do that, you can try!

I remember my last day in hanoi.. I had been there for a few days and none of the places we went to had it. After a $3 bottle of hanoi vodka, and a quick stop on one of the bench presses surrounding hoan kiem lake, I finally found a hidden place in the old quarter that sold this fine beverage. I am going to wake up and make this exactly as described. Thanks for sharing!

I guess I was lucky that the people I was with in Ho Chi Minh City this year had heard of it. Took me to a wonderful little cafe that served it. It was so good. I make it once a month for myself now. It's rich, but so damn good.

Wow I'm vietnamese and have never heard of this, I always thought it was just cafe sua hot or cold. I was just in vietnam a few weeks ago and just drank coffee with condense milk, man I wish I knew about this and ordered one just to try.

This coffee is very famous in Hanoi Old Quarter in Vietnam. It is called "Cà phê trứng". Next time visiting Vietnam you can find it in Cà phê Giảng, 39 Nguyễn Hữu Huân St. or Cà phê Đinh, 13 Đinh Tiên Hoàng St. Both of them are very near Hoàn Kiếm lake.

I just got back from a trip to Hanoi where I visited Giang cafe - the official spot for this. It was so delicious and I'm looking forward to trying out this recipe at home.

I was in Hanoi and saw "egg coffee" on the menu. After asking if they were serious, and if they really used actual eggs, I gave it a whirl. It was so amazing I ordered another immediately after finishing the first. Word of warning: It is more like a coffee dessert than a coffee, though. More of an alternative to a hot chocolate than a coffee. So if what you want is a coffee, rather than a dessert, then you're probably best ordering a coffee.

Awee man I missed out! I just tried a recipe from another Channel. I was a little surprised and disappointed. I came back to do a review and saw this video. Now I know where I went wrong. My coffee had cooled down to begin with and I didn't know that it needed to sit for 30 seconds. Plus I love adding a little bit more coffee on top. That's very tiramisu! Needless to say putting the egg mixture onto cooled coffee and drinking it right away had the egg mixture very thick. I had to Stir It Up and still struggled to get that right mix of coffee and cream. Still tasty. Now I don't have to experiment to figure out how to thin it out! I also love the idea of adding vanilla. Otherwise the mixture is a little Bland but still amazing! Now I'm excited to try it again tomorrow thank you 😄

This is awesome, easy to make and you can use your favorite coffee, i used 4 grams of Nescafe Classic for one cup (made in about 1.3 dl of water)

it remind me to "kopi talua" (literally translated as "egg coffee") from west sumatra. one of my friend introduce me to this coffee. it's quite a surprise, even though they put beaten raw egg yolk into it, I didn't smell egg at all. not only coffee, they put egg to tea too, it would be called "teh talua" (egg tea). both of them use sugar and condensed milk.

really like the idea of this. The egg layer is almost like a Sabayon. I see it as more of a dessert maybe serve with a crisp delicate biscuit, cats tongue or tuille! Um I'm intrigued!!!

Very nice video thanks. I realised its only common in Hanoi. When i visited Saigon it was rarely found there. Saigonese ppl mostly drink iced coffee.

Got inspired and made my own! Well with some modifications 😂... 1 egg yoke, honey, unsulphored blackstrap molasses, splash of milk... and I put a small bit of butter in the coffee b/c I'm a fan of bulletproof coffee). Didn't come out like the actual thing but it was really good 😊.

+Mulianya Moem - Unfortunately I don't. But if you have any Asian markets near you, you might be able to find one. If you search the AliExpress website for "vietnam coffee filter", there's a few sellers that ship to Indonesia as well (some of them offer free shipping). However, the good news is that you don't necessarily need to use a Vietnamese phin to try this recipe. Simply brew very dark, strong coffee instead using the equipment you currently have. +Fuz Niaxi - Whisking it by hand would take a LOT of time, and unfortunately the texture doesn't come out quite as dense or fluffy. It'll still be tasty though! An electric blender might work okay. Thanks for watching! :)

I have also hand whisked it, it's just not going to be very fluffy, unless you're very good and have a strong, fast whisking technique. myself I'm not very strong or energetic, so I can't manage it, by it's still good and a bit foamy. I also can't do meringue but I know people could do it without the electric mixer, just not me sadly.

l'uovo sbattuto. This is Italian and been around forever. Basically putting the zabaglione in your espresso or latte. Commonly was given to children since caffe is so bitter.

How did u make the egg yolk and sweet condensed milk stirred till it becomes fluffy and white? I tried and tried but mine is liquid , not so fluffy as yours

I tried to make this and it didn’t turn to foam whatsoever - it stayed goopy AF and sunk to the bottom of the coffee. Wasted two cups trying to correct it. What am I doing wrong?

Not enough whipping, it get pale cause there are bubbles in it. Try Whipping it longer.

I've tried it and although it tasted good, the cream mixed with the coffee instead of resting on the top of it, like the video. What could I be doing wrong?

+Rafael Nelvam - I'm glad you enjoyed the taste! If the cream is sinking, there's a couple things you'll want to try. Firstly, try whipping the egg mixture for a longer period of time to create a fluffier texture. Depending on your beater-type, weather, ingredients, etc -- sometimes those eggs just need more of a beating before they get really fluffy. And lastly, stay really close to the surface of the coffee when pouring. Pouring from too high can sometimes cause the egg cream to "dive down", which will keep it from floating on top. To help control the flow, you can try pouring the egg cream over the back of a teaspoon, held just over the surface of the coffee. (See my Irish Coffee video for a similar technique.) How come you've not uploaded videos lately? Are you done with youtube? :) Honeysuckle got around to making the Vietnamese egg coffee and it reminded me of when I first saw this video and how mesmerizing all your coffee videos were to me. Sonny from "Best Ever Food Review Show" did a video in Hanoi last week where he featured the egg coffee as well. Hope you are well.

I disagree when you put condense milk in with the eggs. If you put condense milk in the coffee and let it sink to the bottom then you'll have three layers. Condense milk at the bottom, coffee in the middle and the creamy egg yolk on top, which then will look much prettier like a liquid tiramisu. And if you use honey instead of sugar, you'll get a better creamier texture.

The condensed milk will be mixed with the coffee. No layer there. In Vietnam, they use condensed milk instead of milk, and it makes the coffee much, uhm, condensed. The strong bitter Vietnamese coffee mixed with sweetened condensed milk, be something that make starbucks become shit.
